Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease that affects not only patients' physical health but also their psychological well-being. Psychological stress may increase blood glucose levels, worsen clinical conditions, and reduce the effectiveness of diabetes management. Therefore, effective non-pharmacological interventions are needed to help reduce stress among patients with T2DM. This study aimed to examine the effect of the Spiritual Emotional Freedom Technique (SEFT) on stress levels in patients with T2DM. A quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. Five respondents with moderate to high stress levels participated in the study. Stress levels were assessed before and after the intervention using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-42 (DASS-42). Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in stress levels following the SEFT intervention, with a significance value of p = 0.039 (p < 0.05). The mean stress score decreased from 22.80 before the intervention to 13.80 afterward. These findings indicate that SEFT effectively reduces stress in patients with T2DM through a combination of gentle tapping techniques and spiritual approaches that promote relaxation, emotional balance, and psychological well-being. Therefore, SEFT can be considered an effective, safe, and practical non-pharmacological therapy to support stress management and improve the overall quality of life of individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
