Abstract

Cancer is a problem in the health sector because this disease has an increasing incidence of morbidity and mortality. While the treatment still leaves some drug side effects, which cause discomfort for cancers sufferers. The arises because most cancer drugs work non-selectively. Because of some of the problems above, it is necessary to encourage the search for alternative drugs treatment of cancer. Voacanga foetida (Blume) Rolfe (Apocynaceae) is a species of plant from the genus Voacanga known as the tampa badak from West Sumatra. This plant is known to be source of indole alkaloids and also bis-indole alkaloids potential as cancer drugs. Therefore, in this study we are interested to explore the potency of this plant as natural product sources with potential cytotoxic activity. The study was started from the isolation process and continued by characterization of the isolated compounds and then testing their cytotoxic activity T47D breast cancer cell line. The isolation process of alkaloid compounds were performed by acid-base extraction, liquid-liquid fractionation, and followed by separation using column chromatography. Then, the potency of cytotoxic activity of the isolates were screened through Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method and evaluated by MTT assay. The structure of three isolated alkaloids (VFB-DB1.1; VFB-DB2.1; and VFB-DB2.2) were charachterized using spectroscopic analyses, including UV and FT-IR. One isolated compound (VFB-DB1.1) was also characterized using 1H NMR spectroscopy. Based on the similarity of 1H NMR spectra of isolated compound when compared with the literature, compound VFB-DB1.1 was identified as voacangine. Then, the BSLT and MTT assay result showed that VFB-DB1.1 exhibited LC50 value of 15.8 µg/mL againt Artemia salina L.and IC50 value of 8.9 µg/mL against T47D breast cancer cells, respectively.

Abstract

Dragon skin is a waste that is rarely used and often discarded. The dragonfruit skin has antioxidant activity related to the anthocyanin content that protects the skin from oxidation damage to prevent premature aging. This study introduces a new approach to utilizing super red dragon fruit skin waste often thrown away, by formulating it into a hydrogel preparation with potential as a cosmetic product. An experimentally used method with a true-experimental design. There are 7 formulas, F1 (base), F2, F3, and F4 (with ultrasonic extract 1%, 2%, 3.). The evaluations included organoleptic tests, homogeneity tests, viscosity testing, pH tests, swelling ratio, freeze and thaw. The results of this study show that super red dragonfruit leather extracts can be formed in hydrogel preparations and have good physical quality properties.

Abstract

Gaharu leaves (Aquilaria malaccensis Lam) are a type of plant commonly used as a raw material for pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and perfumes due to its secondary metabolic compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, steroids, and quinones. This study aims to determine the total flavonoid content of 96% ethanol extract of gaharu leaves using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Gaharu leaves were extracted using the Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE) method with 96% ethanol as the solvent. The resulting extract was then qualitatively tested and the flavonoid content was measured using UV-Vis spectrophotometry with quercetin as the standard. The results of the determination of the total flavonoid content of the 96% ethanol extract of gaharu leaves were 2.539 ± 0.005% equivalent to quercetin.

Abstract

The binahong plant (Anredera cordifolia) is known to contain active compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids that have the potential to lower blood glucose levels. This study aimed to evaluate the antihyperglycemic activity and determine the optimal dose of the combination of ethanol extract of agarwood (Aquilaria malaccensis) leaves and binahong leaves in male mice. The study was conducted experimentally using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) using 25 mice divided into five treatment groups: a negative control (0.05% NaCMC) and a positive control (metformin). The other three groups were given a combination of agarwood and binahong extracts in dosage ratios of 1:1, 2:1, and 1:2. ANOVA results showed that all extract combinations significantly reduced blood glucose levels compared to the negative control. The 1:1 dose combination showed the best effectiveness, equivalent to metformin, especially on days 3 to 7.

Abstract

The yellow sirsak plant (Annona montana) is an annonaceae family which has been used by the community as traditional medicine properties such as treating diarrhea, vitamin C deficiency and treating boils. This study aims to determine the cytotoxic activity of the larvae of Artemia salina Leach shrimp by using the BSLT method after giving extracts from the leaves and fruit of yellow sirsak (Annona montana). The results showed that the LC50 value of the n- hexane extract of yellow sirsak leaves was 45,84 µg/mL, the ethyl acetate extract of yellow sirsak leaves was 26,44 µg/mL and the ethanol extract of yellow sirsak leaves was 13,99 µg/mL. The n-hexane extract of yellow sirsak fruit was 31,46 µg/mL, the ethyl acetate extract was 40,45 µg/mL and the ethanol extract of the yellow sirsak fruit was 19,84 µg/mL. The mixture of n-hexane leaves and yellow sirsak fruit was 29,91 µg/mL, the ethyl acetate extract mixture of yellow sirsak leaves and fruit was 21,71 µg/mL and the mixture of ethanol extract and yellow sirsak fruit was 14,75 µg/mL. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of yellow sirsak leaves shows the most active cytotoxic activity with an LC50 value of 13,99 µg/mL.
