Abstract

The HIV/AIDS epidemic remains a significant global health concern, with increasing prevalence in Indonesia's Karawang Regency. People living with HIV/AIDS face numerous challenges, including a decline in immune function and CD4 T-cell depletion. While antiretroviral therapy (ART) is the primary treatment, there is a growing interest in complementary therapies to support immune function and overall well-being. This study aimed to investigate the effect of meditation therapy on CD4 levels in HIV/AIDS patients at Karawang Regional General Hospital. A quasiexperimental study with a prepost design was conducted on 15 HIV/AIDS patients with CD4 levels ranging from 200–500 cells/mm3. The participants engaged in meditation sessions twice a week, twice daily, for one month. CD4 levels were measured before and after the intervention. Demographic data were collected, and statistical analyses were performed via paired t tests (p<0.05). Most of the participants were male (80%), aged 31-37 years (46.7%), and had a vocational high school education (40%). Preintervention CD4 levels ranged from 226 to 459 cells/mm3 (mean: 334.87±57.583), whereas postintervention levels ranged from 220 to 467 cells/mm3 (mean: 340.93±62.721). A paired t test revealed no statistically significant effect of meditation therapy on CD4 levels (p=0.150). This study revealed no significant increase in CD4 levels following a one-month meditation intervention in HIV/AIDS patients. While this research does not support the use of short-term meditation therapy to increase CD4 levels in HIV/AIDS patients, it underscores the need for further investigation of complementary therapies for this population.

Abstract

Stunting is a form of chronic malnutrition that begins during the prenatal period. Nutritional interventions during pregnancy play a role in preventing fetal growth retardation. Ambon bananas (Musa acuminata) and dates (Phoenix dactylifera) contain iron, folate, and micronutrients that support maternal health and promote fetal growth. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a combination of Ambon banana and date juice in increasing maternal weight and estimated fetal weight in third-trimester pregnant women as a stunting prevention measure. A quasiexperimental study with a pretest‒posttest control group design was conducted with 20 pregnant women in their third trimester at the Imas Masriyah Midwife Practice, Bogor Regency, Indonesia, from October to December 2023. The respondents were divided into an experimental group (n=10) that received Ambon banana and date juice and a control group (n=10) without any special intervention. Maternal weight and estimated fetal weight were measured before and after the intervention. Data analysis was performed via paired t-tests.  In the experimental group, the mean maternal weight increased from 54.90±3.071 kg to 56.40±2.989 kg (p=0.003), and the estimated fetal weight increased from 2.43±0.155 kg to 2.58±0.152 kg (p=0.005). The control group showed no significant changes in maternal weight (p=0.022) or estimated fetal weight (p=0.036). The combination of Ambon banana juice and dates effectively increased maternal weight and estimated fetal weight in pregnant women in the third trimester and has the potential to be used as a nutritional intervention for stunting prevention.

Abstract

Adolescent girls are at high risk of experiencing vaginal discharge. Efforts that can be made to overcome the problem of vaginal discharge in adolescent girls are through vaginal hygiene education and also the provision of red betel leaf decoction. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of vaginal hygiene education and red betel leaf decoction on the management of vaginal discharge in adolescent girls at the Harapan Bunda Sejahtera Clinic, Bekasi Regency in 2024. The method used was a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest. The population of adolescent girls with vaginal discharge, a sample of 45 people, purposive sampling technique, statistical test paired t test. The study showed that the incidence of vaginal discharge in adolescent girls before being given vaginal hygiene education and red betel leaf decoction was found that all 45 people (100%) experienced vaginal discharge, and after being given vaginal hygiene education and red betel leaf decoction, the majority did not experience vaginal discharge, 42 people (93.3%). There was effectiveness of vaginal hygiene education and red betel leaf decoction on the management of vaginal discharge with a p-value of 0.001. Red betel leaf decoction can treat vaginal discharge (fluor albus) because it contains flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and alkaloids, which act as antiseptics and anti-inflammatories, suppressing bacterial and fungal growth and relieving itching, irritation, and discomfort. Vaginal hygiene education and red betel leaf decoction are effective treatments for vaginal discharge in adolescent girls.

Abstract

Stunting is a serious concern in Indonesia due to inadequate nutrition in children, which impacts physical growth and brain development. The government is actively working to reduce stunting rates throughout Indonesia. One effective way to address this is by utilizing moringa leaves as a nutritional supplement, given their rich nutritional content and widespread availability. This community service project aims to improve the knowledge and skills of mothers and health workers in stunting prevention through education and demonstrations of making moringa leaf pudding. Moringa leaves were chosen for their high nutritional content and easy availability as a food additive. The activity took place at the Jatimulya Community Health Center (Puskesmas) and involved 20 participants, consisting of mothers and health workers with toddlers and preschoolers. The methods used included education on the benefits and nutritional content of moringa leaves as an alternative to prevent stunting, as well as a demonstration of how to make moringa leaf pudding. Before and after the education, participants completed questionnaires to assess their understanding of the material. The results showed an increase in participants' knowledge regarding the use of moringa leaves in preventing stunting. Participants were also enthusiastic and actively participated in the activities. This approach is expected to strengthen stunting prevention efforts in the region and improve children's nutritional intake sustainably.
