Abstract

This study investigates the effects of D-Limonene on reproductive health parameters in albino rats, focusing on sperm quality and gonadal morphology. The study involved administering D-Limonene at various doses to assess their impacts on sperm parameters, including motility, viability, and abnormalities, as well as gonadal morphometry. The D-Limonene was applied at doses of 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg BW for 60 days, followed by histopathological analysis of testicular tissues. Results indicated that D-Limonene treatment revealed a dose-dependent decline in sperm quality parameters. Specifically, total motility, progressive motility, and viability decreased, while abnormality rates increased with higher D-Limonene doses. Notably, the highest dose (150 mg/kg BW) led to the most significant reductions in sperm motility and viability. Additionally, the presence of necrotic cells and structural changes in testicular tissues were observed, supporting the adverse impact of D-Limonene on reproductive function. The findings suggest that D-Limonene exhibits potential as an effective spermicide, highlighting its utility in population control applications. The study underscores the need for further research to fully understand the mechanisms behind these effects and their implications for reproductive health.

Abstract

The natural hatching success rate of olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) eggs on Pulau Santen Beach is often hindered by predator disturbances, temperature fluctuations caused by human activities, and unfavorable environmental conditions, with a success rate of only 50–70%. This study aimed to analyze the hatching success rate of olive ridley sea turtle eggs using the INTAN BOX incubation device on Pulau Santen Beach, Banyuwangi. A quantitative descriptive method was employed to observe 365 eggs relocated from four nests to the INTAN BOX over an incubation period of 50–60 days. Parameters observed included temperature, humidity, and hatching success rates. Results indicated an average hatching success rate of 86%, with individual nest success rates ranging from 83% to 89%. These rates are significantly higher than the 50–70% success rate achieved through natural hatching. The INTAN BOX provides a stable environment, protects eggs from predators, and optimizes temperature and humidity conditions, thereby enhancing hatching success. Additionally, the device enables the management of hatchling sex ratios through temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD), which is critical for sea turtle population conservation. This study concluded that the INTAN BOX is an effective innovation for olive ridley turtle conservation while also supporting local community empowerment around Pulau Santen Beach.

Abstract

Appetite loss in animals can lead to significant health and productivity issues, particularly in agricultural systems. While pharmacological stimulants are commonly used, concerns regarding drug residues and antimicrobial resistance have led to an increased interest in natural alternatives such as acupuncture. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture in enhancing appetite across various animal species. Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect for studies published between 2013 and 2025. Inclusion criteria focused on original research investigating acupuncture effects on feed intake, appetite behavior, or appetite-related biomarkers in animals. Data from 27 eligible studies were extracted and analyzed for species, acupoints, techniques, outcomes, and quality. The majority of studies (81.5%) demonstrated a significant increase in appetite or feed intake following acupuncture, particularly electroacupuncture targeting acupoints ST36 and SP6. Hormonal analysis in several studies revealed increased ghrelin and neuropeptide Y levels and reduced cortisol concentrations. Poultry and swine responded most rapidly to treatment, while ruminants showed gradual but sustained improvements. The overall risk of bias was low to moderate. Acupuncture is a promising non-pharmacological intervention to improve animal appetite through neuroendocrine regulation. It offers a sustainable, welfare-friendly approach compatible with organic and drug-free production systems. However, further standardized, large-scale studies are needed to establish clinical protocols and confirm long-term efficacy.
