Abstract

Social media Facebook is one of the three most used social media in political communication in Indonesia. This development, on the one hand, is a good sign, where a new era has begun, where communication technology is used to win democratic competition and political sympathy, but on the other hand, the use of social media communication technology makes politics full of distortion due to the widespread phenomenon of hoaxes and hate speech.  This research was conducted with one aim, namely: to reveal the distortion of the language of debate on Facebook which is packaged in various hoaxes and hate speech related to ethnicity, religion, race and intergroup (SARA). By using the critical hermeneutics method, this research attempts to explore the context of the text, reconstruct the text, discover layers of text distortion, and analyze the text to find the author's self-emancipation and various validity claims in the text. By using the perspective of communicative action theory, this research finds the fact that political language debated on Facebook social media makes it difficult to build intersubjective consensus between writers and readers in general. Language debates that center on hate speech based on religion and ethnicity fail to build consensus to understand each other because the debate texts are dominated by mastery of language that centers on psycho-religious collective solidarity. Private languages that are centered on psycho-religious collective solidarity do not provide space for achieving intersubjective mutual understanding between text writers and text readers in general. Keywords:Communication Distortion, Hate Speech, Communicative Action, Collective Solidarity, Psycho-religious

Abstract

Miscommunication arises when communication between individuals is not conducted with optimal effectiveness and efficiency. This phenomenon is notably prevalent within academic environments, such as schools, which constitute a significant portion of an individual's formative yearstypically spanning 12 years. To address this issue, a structured program encompassing mentorship and training rooted in communication studies, both theoretical and practical, was implemented with the aim of mitigating instances of miscommunication. This initiative engaged a total of 124 participants, comprising 118 students and 6 teachers from Kristoforus II Senior High School in Jakarta. The training emphasized the development of public communication skills, alongside their application within the fields of psychological communication and broadcast communication. Participants provided overwhelmingly positive feedback on the training's execution, underscoring the efficacy of practical training methods. The findings reaffirm the recommendation of practical approaches as an optimal methodology for enhancing public communication competencies in educational industries.

Abstract

Ciamsi, a long-standing historical legacy, continues to be popular to this day, serving as concrete evidence of its enduring appeal. Spanning the tumultuous shifts of historical epochs, Ciamsi has persevered and been preserved within various temples, both large and small, playing a pivotal role as a divination tool. The enduring presence of Ciamsi not only underscores its unquestionable intrinsic value but also reflects the unwavering spirit of Chinese tradition and its cultural heritage. Consequently, this research is deeply rooted in the environment of centuries-old temples in Jakarta, where Ciamsi has become an inseparable part of the local cultural fabric. The primary objective of this research is to delve profoundly into the intricate meanings and interpretations embedded within Ciamsi. Additionally, the research aims to unveil the profound role of symbolism within the realm of Ciamsi, as employed by Vihara Dharma Bhakti and Vihara Dharma Jaya Toasebio. To achieve these objectives, this study employs the comprehensive hermeneutical framework introduced by the eminent philosopher, Paul Ricouer. This research fundamentally aligns with the qualitative research paradigm, enabling a profound and nuanced understanding of the subject matter.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of dialogic communication in increasing teachers' critical awareness through Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy approach. The background of this study is based on the reality of traditional education that still applies the banking education model, where teachers are the only source of knowledge and students are only passive recipients. This model closes the space for dialogue, reflection, and critical thinking. In contrast, Freire's approach emphasizes the importance of equal dialogue between teachers and students as a path to liberation and critical awareness. This study uses a qualitative method with a sociocultural approach and a constructivist paradigm. Data were collected through structured interviews with three teachers from vocational high schools who have different backgrounds, experiences, and involvement in reflective communities. The results of the study indicate that dialogic communication is understood as a process of open exchange of ideas. However, its implementation is still limited by structural obstacles such as time, a dense curriculum, and the hierarchical culture of schools. Teachers who are active in dialogic forums tend to have a higher critical awareness of educational issues. This study confirms that dialogic communication not only increases student participation but is also an effective strategy for forming reflective and transformative teachers. Systemic support is needed so that dialogic communication can develop sustainably in the educational environment.

Abstract

This article analysed the controversial public statement made by political consultant Hasan Nasbi, “just cook the pig’s head”, in response to an act of symbolic intimidation toward a journalist. Using Michel Foucault’s discourse theory as the primary analytical framework—focusing on statement analysis, historical context, and power relations—this study investigates how language operates as a mechanism of power that normalises symbolic violence, marginalises dissent, and sustains hegemonic authority. The findings show that Nasbi’s language is not merely rhetorical but functions ideologically: it delegitimises journalistic victimhood, redefines social norms of seriousness and threat, and enacts a regime of truth that reinforces the asymmetry of power in public discourse. Drawing from contemporary discourse studies, the study argues that such statements reproduce a surveillance-based form of control, wherein symbolic aggression is trivialised, and political accountability is eroded. This research contributes to the growing field of critical discourse analysis by demonstrating how everyday political utterances carry deep ideological functions and shape the boundaries of public meaning, legitimacy, and justice.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of power relations in the One Piece anime series, particularly in the Sabaody Archipelago Arc. The background of this research is based on the growing significance of anime as a global popular culture product that not only functions as entertainment but also represents social inequality, domination, and resistance. The purpose of this study is to analyze how power relations are constructed, maintained, and normalized through discourse, dialogue, and narrative interaction between characters. This research uses a qualitative approach with Michel Foucault’s discourse analysis as the main theoretical framework. The data were collected through documentation by observing selected episodes of the Sabaody Archipelago Arc, transcribing relevant dialogues, and identifying scenes that represent power relations. The findings show that power in this arc operates through five main dimensions: power relations in statements, language as a tool of power, normalization of social relations, panopticon mechanisms in statements, and marginalized subjects. The domination of the Tenryuubito is not only shown through physical violence but also through verbal authority, social fear, and internalized obedience among subordinate groups. This study concludes that the Sabaody Archipelago Arc functions as a critical media text that reveals how discourse can reproduce hierarchy, legitimize domination, and normalize social inequality.

Abstract

The rapid growth of social media platforms has transformed digital marketing communication strategies, requiring brands to develop more authentic, interactive, and relatable approaches to engage audiences. TikTok, as a short-form video platform, provides opportunities for fashion brands to strengthen consumer relationships through creative content strategies. SCULPT, a shapewear brand, has shifted from relying on external content creators toward an Employee-Generated Content (EGC) strategy by positioning internal employees as brand communicators. This study aims to examine how SCULPT implements EGC as a marketing communication strategy on TikTok and to identify the reasons behind the adoption of this approach. This research employed a qualitative method using in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving key informants, including the owner, marketing manager, social media specialist, ads specialist, and content creators. The findings indicate that SCULPT’s EGC strategy represents an Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) practice through three main dimensions: message consistency, communication channel integration, and relationship building. The strategy maintains consistent brand messages related to comfort, product quality, confidence, and women empowerment while integrating TikTok, TikTok Shop, live streaming, campaigns, and paid advertising channels. Furthermore, employees act as brand representatives who create closer, more personal, and trustworthy interactions with audiences. In conclusion, EGC enables SCULPT to strengthen brand identity, improve audience engagement, and adapt marketing communication to the dynamic characteristics of digital media.

Abstract

The rapid development of social media, particularly TikTok, has created new forms of digital communication where storytelling serves as a primary means of building emotional engagement and shaping audience perception. A compelling phenomenon is the emergence of content that elevates quiet, empty restaurants and transforms them into narratives rich with values of struggle, hope, and perseverance. The TikTok account @harbie16 consistently employs storytelling to convey narratives about less-popular restaurants, potentially reshaping their public image. This study aims to analyze the narrative elements used in @harbie16's TikTok content, understand the role of storytelling strategies in reconstructing the image of a quiet restaurant, and examine audience interpretations of the conveyed narrative. This research employed an interpretive paradigm with a qualitative approach and a case study method. The primary theoretical framework is Walter Fisher's Narrative Paradigm, specifically the concepts of narrative coherence and narrative fidelity. Data collection was conducted through digital observation of TikTok content, documentation, and analysis of audience responses in the form of comments and other digital interactions. The findings reveal that storytelling, built through elements of characters, conflict, storylines, and solutions, creates coherent and high-fidelity narratives that are well-received by the audience. The narratives play a significant role in shifting negative perceptions of quiet restaurants into a more positive image by forming new meanings based on empathy and shared social experience. This research contributes to the development of digital communication, storytelling, and narrative paradigm studies, and serves as a reference for business actors and content creators in building an image through social media.

Abstract

The appointment of Thomas Djiwandono as Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia attracted significant media attention due to his familial connection with President Prabowo Subianto and the implications for institutional independence. This study aims to analyze how major Indonesian online media Tempo.com, Detik.com, and Kompas.com framed the appointment and constructed social reality through news reporting. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, using framing analysis based on Pan and Kosicki's model. Six news articles published in January 2026 were selected according to predetermined criteria, and data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model through data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. Results indicate distinct framing strategies across media outlets. During the candidacy phase, Tempo.com emphasized political relations, Detik.com focused on administrative procedures, and Kompas.com highlighted legitimacy and support. In the ratification phase, all media shifted focus toward independence, professionalism, and institutional legitimacy, reflecting editorial differences and framing dynamics. The findings demonstrate that online media not only report facts but actively shape public perception through the selection of headlines, sources, diction, and visuals. This study concludes that media framing plays a crucial role in constructing social reality, emphasizing the need for critical public media consumption. Future research should expand media scope and employ quantitative approaches to evaluate the effects of framing on public opinion.
