Abstract

This study delves into the intricate interplay of humour, psycholinguistics, morphology, themes, rema, and language intelligence in the Indonesian language context. Employing a detailed analysis of seven humorous texts, the research dissects linguistic constructs that emphasize abrupt contextual shifts and cognitive disruptions as the core of Indonesian humour. By investigating the strategic use of themes and rhema, this study reveals how humour often arises from semantic illusions, morphological play, and phonological ambiguity that challenge the reader’s expectations. Through a psycholinguistic lens, it highlights the cognitive processes involved in humour comprehension, demonstrating the pivotal role of language intelligence in detecting and appreciating linguistic incongruities. Additionally, the study connects these humorous strategies to broader Islamic cultural values, such as adab (etiquette), ikhlas (sincerity), hikmah (wisdom), and amanah (moral responsibility), showing how humour reflects ethical communication embedded within Islamic civilisation. The research concludes that humour in Indonesian is a linguistic phenomenon and a reflection of cultural and spiritual intelligence, emphasising how language structure and religious values converge in crafting and appreciating comedic expression

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find a strategy for Indonesian humor material by Cak Lontong. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The data was collected using the method of referring to the basic tapping techniques and advanced note-taking techniques. Data analysis in this study uses a referential equivalent method with similar linking techniques to support codification, reduction, presentation, and interpretation under a qualitative research framework. The results of this study showed that Cak Lontong used eight humor strategies namely utilizing general truths that are clearly known to people, changing constituents with language experience, deliberately misplacing pronouns, conveying something that is incomplete, changing different languages, giving responses that are unrelated, utilizing language gaps to distort their meaning, and conveying unfair, absurd, or even controversial topic.

Abstract

This study examines the interaction between word order, focus, and prosody in Indonesian and English within the framework of the syntax–prosody interface. While previous studies have largely focused on Indo-European languages, limited attention has been given to how these components interact in typologically distinct languages such as Indonesian. To address this gap, the study employs a mixed-method design combining corpus-based analysis and experimental approaches, including production and perception tasks. The corpus data reveal that English predominantly relies on prosodic marking to signal focus, whereas Indonesian demonstrates greater flexibility in word order, using syntactic fronting alongside prosodic cues. Experimental results further show that pitch (F0) is a stronger predictor of focus interpretation in English, whereas in Indonesian, a more distributed system involving both syntactic and prosodic features is observed. Statistical analyses, including linear mixed-effects models, confirm that language type, focus position, and prosodic parameters significantly influence focus interpretation. The findings contribute to the theoretical development of the syntax–prosody interface by demonstrating that focus realization is shaped by language-specific constraints while still reflecting universal principles of information structure. Methodologically, the study highlights the effectiveness of integrating corpus and experimental data in cross-linguistic research. These results provide new insights into typological variation in focus marking and offer a more comprehensive understanding of how syntax and prosody interact in natural language.

Abstract

The study investigates the literary activities of third-semester students in the English Education Study Programme at Universitas Musamus Merauke and examines the structural and institutional factors that constrain their engagement with literature. While existing studies on literacy in Indonesian higher education have tended to focus on urban and better-resourced institutional contexts, research addressing the specific conditions of literacy culture in peripheral eastern Indonesian universities, particularly in South Papua, remains scarce. This study addresses that gap by situating the problem within the particular social, geographic, and institutional realities of Universitas Musamus Merauke. Situated in Merauke, South Papua, a region where access to literary resources remains limited and literacy rates among the general population stand at approximately 72%, the study draws on classroom observation, interviews with secondary school teachers, and a systematic library study to collect its data. A fishbone diagram organised around the 5M framework and the USG (Urgency, Seriousness, Growth) method are employed to identify and rank the causal factors behind students' low literary engagement. The findings indicate that a low overall literacy level constitutes the most pressing concern, compounded by the scarcity of organised literary activities on campus, insufficient book procurement, and limited student awareness of available reading resources. The study proposes a set of contextually grounded responses and discusses their potential contribution to character formation and the development of critically engaged graduates in a culturally diverse educational context.
Affective Meaning in Song Lyrics: Implications for TESOL Practice Rawuh Yuda Yuwana; Seli Marlina Radja Leba; Sri Ananda Pertiwi; Febriyanti Dwiratna Lestari

Abstract

This study investigates how affective meaning is linguistically realized in English song lyrics and examines its pedagogical implications for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). While songs have frequently been used as instructional media in language classrooms, limited attention has been paid to how emotional meanings are constructed and interpreted semantically by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. This qualitative study analyzed three contemporary English songs—Someone Like You by Adele, Fight Song by Rachel Platten, and Fix You by Coldplay—using Leech's framework of affective meaning. The study also involved 25 undergraduate students from the English Education Study Program at Universitas Musamus, Indonesia, who were observed in the classroom, asked to complete written interpretation tasks, and interviewed using semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that affective meaning is predominantly realized through three linguistic resources: evaluative lexical items, metaphorical expressions, and connotative symbols. Among these, evaluative lexis was the most readily interpreted by students, whereas metaphorical and symbolic expressions required contextual discussion and semantic scaffolding to achieve deeper understanding. The classroom implementation further demonstrated that guided semantic analysis of song lyrics enhanced learners' interpretative competence, encouraged critical discussion, and promoted greater awareness of emotional meaning in authentic discourse. This study contributes to semantic research by extending the application of affective meaning theory to authentic song lyrics and demonstrates its pedagogical value for TESOL. The findings suggest that song lyrics should be regarded not merely as motivational classroom materials but also as linguistically rich texts that foster semantic awareness, critical interpretation, and contextual language learning.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to implement strategic branding language to enhance the competitiveness of an independent publishing house, namely Akselerasi Karya Mandiri Publisher, located in Merauke, South Papua. The activity is grounded in the partner’s limited utilization of language as a strategic branding instrument in promoting publishing products, which has constrained market visibility and competitiveness. The program employed a participatory and practice-based mentoring approach, encompassing needs assessment, conceptual training, assisted development of branding language, initial implementation, and reflective evaluation. The results indicate a significant improvement in the partner’s understanding of the strategic role of language in shaping publisher identity and brand image, as well as the production of more structured, consistent, and value-oriented branding language for publishing products. Initial implementation of the revised branding language in promotional media demonstrated positive changes in message delivery and strengthened product identity. This activity contributes to enhancing the partner’s capacity to manage branding language independently and sustainably, while also supporting the development of the local literacy ecosystem. Therefore, the implementation of strategic branding language serves as a relevant empowerment approach for independent publishers seeking to improve competitiveness in the digital literacy era.
