In addition, the United States's public sentiment towards South Korea still shows a high number compared to other countries. However, the spread of hallyu turned out to be successful with the decline in United States public sentiment towards South Korea and hallyu from 35.6% in 2017 to 16.5% in 2020. This study aims to analyze South Korea public diplomacy efforts in spreading hallyu to the United States in order to improve their relations and the image of South Korea as an attractive country as stated in Public Diplomacy Act 2017-2021. Abstract

West Sumatra is one of the provinces in Indonesia where most of the people are of the Minangkabau ethnicity. People in the province base their lives on the customs and religion of Islam. As of October 2021, West Sumatra had not performed well in terms of vaccination rates. It was one of the two provinces in Indonesia with the lowest acceptance rate of the COVID-19 vaccine at the time. The government of West Sumatra did not sanction vaccine refusal either. This resulted in a slowdown in the government’s objective of creating herd immunity. This article, therefore, aims to analyze the local values of West Sumatra, which can be utilized as a means of overcoming this situation. The research method used in this study was qualitative, with primary data collected through interviews, and secondary data obtained from journals, books, reports, and news articles. The result shows that the Covid-19 is a global problem which requires a domestic response by involving local actors from social capital networks in West Sumatra.KEYWORDSCovid-19; Intermestic; Policy; West Sumatra

This paper is qualitative-descriptive research and is analysed by using the concept of digital diplomacy. As a ghost island, Taiwan struggles to be present and seen in the international community. Taiwan’s success story in combating the COVID-19 pandemic has changed its global image. Taiwan has actively utilized this situation into political sentiment by campaigning the hashtags #TaiwanCanHelp on digital platforms to spreads its warm power and gain international recognition. The use of social media by government actors and activists has engaged awareness of Taiwan’s situation from more people. It was begun as a campaign to sound Taiwan’s exclusion from WHO and WHA, it later has been used as a slogan to construct Taiwan’s image in global presence as a warm, helpful, and friendly country.

Abstract

This paper attempts to analyze Bundo Kanduang in the success of the Covid-19 vaccination in West Sumatra. Vaccination progress is slow, so that West Sumatra became the second-lowest rank out of 34 provinces in Indonesia in administering the first and second doses of vaccine. This slow process is caused by several things, namely the limited stock of vaccines, the low acceptance of vaccines, and the absence of sanctions for vaccine refusals. The last two things are undoubtedly social challenges that can hinder program recovery in West Sumatra. Therefore, the active role of local actors such as Bundo Kanduang, the term for married women in Minangkabau, is needed to overcome these challenges. She became one of the leading local actors because the Minangkabau community in West Sumatra adheres to a matrilineal culture. This paper uses a qualitative method using primary and secondary data. To help interpret the data, we use the concept of gender identity. This concept identifies roles based on the identity and position of women in the social structure. This paper finds that the Minangkabau people believe that Bundo Kanduang is an influential figure so that Bundo Kanduang has the potential to succeed in the vaccination program in West Sumatra. Bundo Kanduang can play a role in the domestic and public spheres as an educator and model in the family and the community regarding Covid-19 vaccination.

Abstract

Singapore is one of the main destinations for criminal offenders from Indonesia, which causes losses for Indonesia. In the process, in 2007 Indonesia signed an extradition agreement with Singapore but failed to be ratified. During Joko Widodo's administration in 2022, Indonesia re-signed an extradition agreement with Singapore along with the Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) and Flight Information Region (FIR). The three agreements also took effect simultaneously in 2024. Since its signing, it has taken 17 years for the extradition treaty between the two countries to come into force. This case is understood by the Principle of Reciprocity in International Law. This paper uses a qualitative research method with descriptive analytical research. In this case, reciprocity is one of the basic principles governing extradition treaties. This principle is crucial in negotiating fair and equal terms. In drafting international agreements, reciprocity can make negotiations more complex as each party may have different priorities and needs. This is reflected in the case of the extradition treaty between Indonesia and Singapore, where Indonesia wants this treaty to be ratified to facilitate the pursuit of criminals who have fled to Singapore and the return of assets that have been illegally taken. Singapore responded by asking Indonesia to ratify the DCA and FIR Agreement, which cover aspects of Singapore's broader defense and security interests. This principle is crucial in negotiating fair and equitable terms. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

Abstract

The Mekong region is strategic in terms of economics and geopolitics. Besides being home to mainland Southeast Asia countries, external state actors play around in the region, such as the United States, Japan, Korea, and India. They established institutions as a cooperation framework to maximize the region's potential. Over time, ASEAN remains the central organization for cooperation in East Asia, but the numerous cooperations in the Mekong will have implications for ASEAN. This article aims to provide an overview of the dynamics of overlap institutions in the Mekong Region, focusing on ASEAN's position in these cooperative efforts. The overlap institution is used as a conceptual framework. This article applies a qualitative method with secondary data. The Mekong region has multi-membership because the interests of the major actors and countries are intertwined. Therefore, they are trying to open up new opportunities by forming other institutions. In addition, the dynamic will shake East Asia's regional integration.

Abstract

Society often views sex education for early childhood as taboo, believing it is inappropriate for young children. However, early health education plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of sexual violence. In 2022, the Indonesian government recorded a high incidence of sexual violence, with 11.016 reported cases. This study examines the factors that influence maternal behavior in providing reproductive health education to early childhood in West Sumatra during 2021. This study uses a quantitative cross-sectional study method, the research conducted in May to October 2021 in West Sumatra. The study involved 257 mothers with children aged 3-6 years, selected through cluster sampling. We analyzed the data using univariate and bivariate analysis, employing the Chi-square method. The result shows that factors such as attitudes (0.029), exposure to information (<0.001), and family support (<0.001) significantly influence maternal behavior in providing reproductive health education. However, knowledge levels do not show a significant influence on maternal behavior. In addressing these findings, we recommend strengthening family support through family counseling training programs and increasing the availability and accessibility of information on reproductive health education.
