Abstract

Parang batik is a very important form of cultural heritage, possessing sacred value. This batik originated from the palace environment and was worn by a limited circle. The challenge arose regarding how to revitalize the Parang motif so that it could be accepted and worn by the younger generation without losing its philosophical value. The goal was to introduce new values to the Parang batik motif, with the hope that it could be integrated into the creative industry in the future. A qualitative descriptive method with a historical approach was used to uncover the origins of the Parang batik motif and its philosophical meaning. An artistic approach was then used to reveal the results of the revitalization, which were analyzed through visual objects. The composition, pattern structure, and color were analyzed to reveal the results of the revitalization. This process involved adjusting the visual form while maintaining the motif's identity. However, aesthetic touches were added that were in line with the tastes of the younger generation. The results obtained include samples of Parang batik from the revitalization process. The background of the Parang motif was retained, but additional visual elements in the form of horizontal floral arrangements were added at the bottom of the fabric, creating a more modern compositional dynamic. The floral pattern is repeated vertically in bold colors, which differs from the traditional, more muted colors. This study concludes that the revitalization of Parang batik was achieved by using striking colors while maintaining the background of the Parang motif.

Abstract

This research investigates the impact of social media on young artists' self-image and creative process within a studio practice context, exploring how digital influences shape their visual identities and thematic choices. Through Feldman’s art criticism model comprising description, analysis, interpretation, and judgment, this study provides a structured critique of students’ artworks. It examines how social media aesthetics guide their artistic decisions and influence their conceptual frameworks. The study uses qualitative methods, including interviews, observations, visual analyses, and documentation, to capture primary data on the interaction between digital media and creative expression. Findings reveal that social media informs students’ stylistic choices and prompts critical reflection on external influences affecting their artistic practice. Feldman’s framework aids students in critically analyzing existing works, enhancing their observational skills, and strengthening their contextual and conceptual thinking during the initial stages of creation. This approach offers a valuable alternative pedagogical method for painting courses in art universities, encouraging students to engage analytically with digital aesthetics in their creative development.

Abstract

Abstract

The power of female figures is often invisible and implied, but in many works of art, women often become symbols of beauty and hidden strength. Identity, existence, and social reflection are often represented in female figures behind the visible visual side. The issue raised is how female figures depicted in visual form can still have a strong visual narrative and identity that supports the visual work. The aim of this research is to reveal the visual form of female figures represented in contemporary art based on watercolor media so that they have a strong visual narrative and identity. The method used is qualitative descriptive with literature studies and analysis of the works of artists who raise the theme of women.  The results show that with personal experience as a woman and comparing with other artists, the representation of female figures can also reveal emotional narratives and complex social identities behind their beautiful and aesthetic visual forms. This paper is expected to provide new insights into the representation of female figures in contemporary art, especially from the perspective of visual narrative and identity. Abstract

This study investigates the impact of avant-garde cinema in redefining Indonesian film aesthetics, focusing on its role in challenging dominant cultural and technological narratives in the digital era. Presented at the Cine Future: Radical Cinema on Future Perspective exhibition, the research identifies a critical gap in mainstream cinema’s limited engagement with narratives evolving alongside rapid advancements in projection technology and digital reproduction. The study is anchored in the experimental works of film students from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia’s Film and Television Study Program, showcased in the Cine Future exhibition, which exemplifies avant-garde cinema’s potential to reinterpret traditional narratives. With the Practice-led Research methodology, this research integrates artistic practice with critical analysis, allowing student filmmakers to explore the complexities of the digital age through creative expression. Findings indicate that avant-garde cinema enables the construction of new, culturally rooted narratives by merging historical aesthetics with modern technology, providing students with a framework for critiquing and interpreting social realities. This research contributes to broader discussions on avant-garde cinema’s relevance in academic and creative fields. It demonstrates its significance in fostering critical dialogue and evolving cinema as a dynamic medium for cultural reflection. The study underscores the value of incorporating avant-garde methods within film education to prepare students for a rapidly changing cinematic landscape.

Abstract

Film education in Indonesia, often prioritizing industry goals, forcing students to adapt to industry targets and serve the economic gains over artistic achievement. As Indonesian Film and Television Study Program Association (PROSFISI) stated, this industry-oriented view correlates to students who merely consume foreign film entertainment, causing them to become less active, creative, and connected to Indonesian culture and identity. An approach like this breeds a lack of critical thinking and a limited artistic imagination with montage as a contextual device. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that recreate montage in filmmaking education in Indonesia is an opportunity to renew freedom, cultural address, and critique. Through Practice-Led and Artistic Research, the research was conducted in the Film Study Program Bandung, analyzed the application of montage theories by Eisenstein, Pudovkin and Vertov, on student films. Findings suggest that narrative and symbolic montage facilitated deeper meaning around local topics and more straightforward and emotionally resonant narratives. Through a consideration of social-cultural issues the study shows the power of the montage as both an artistic and research tool. This study argues that the curriculum should approach film as a tool that promotes experimentation integrating montage and local culture to deepen student” understanding of film beyond its commodified nature.
