Abstract

Ferns (Pteridophyta) are spore-forming cormophytes that can live in a variety of habitats both as epiphytes, terrestrial and aquatic. In the forest area of Noongan Village, many potentials play an important role in developing forest ecosystems. One such potential is ferns. The results of the study were eight types of ferns in the forest area of Noongan village which were divided into two plots of 50x50 meters at different heights, namely plot I at an altitude of 610 masl with a total of 380 ferns with the percentage: Paku Garuda (Pteridium aquilinium) 0.20 %, Elephant fern (Angiopetris avecta Hoofm) 0.01%, Red rane fern (Selaginella australis) 0.01%, Paku Kikir (Stenosomia Sp.) 0.14%, Ferret fern (Nephrolepis biserrataSchott.) 0, 21%, cecerenean fern (Nephrolepis falcata) 0.16%, suplir fern (Adiantum.) 0.12%, andam fern (Dicranopetris linearis) 0.12%. And plot II at an altitude of 869 meters above sea level with a total of 179 ferns with a percentage of: Garuda fern (Pteridium aquilinium) 0.21%, elephant fern (Angiopetris avectaHoofm) 0.01%, miserly fern (Stenosomia Sp.) 0, 17%, Paku harupat (Nephrolepis biserrate Schott.) 0.21%, Paku cecerenean (Nephrolepis falcata) 0.15%, Suplir (Adiantum.) 0.10%, Paku andam (Dicranopetris linearis) 0.12%. In the plot I, the types and number of ferns were higher than the types and numbers of ferns in plot II. No red fern (Selaginella australis) was found in plot II. And the plant species Paku Harupat (Nephrolepis biserrata Schott). The red fern has the highest number, and the red fern (Selaginella australis.) has the least amount. The difference in altitude greatly affects the surrounding environment. So that these differences greatly affect the number of types and numbers of ferns

Abstract

Cancer is the leading cause of death in the world, with a high prevalence in Indonesia, especially breast cancer. Conventional therapies such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy have various limitations, including severe side effects and cancer cell resistance. This study aims to explore the anticancer potential of the ethanol extract of Apis dorsata Binghami nests originating from Uluway Barat Village, Tana Toraja Regency. Extraction was carried out using the maceration method with 96% ethanol solvent, with a yield of 51.42%, and bioactive compounds were identified through GC-MS analysis. Anticancer activity tests were carried out in vitro on MCF-7 breast cancer cells using the resazurin assay method . The results showed that the extract contained various bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, furanones, and aromatic aldehydes which are known to have antioxidant and anticancer activities. The IC50 value obtained was 434.30 µg/mL, indicating weak cytotoxic activity. Nevertheless, this extract showed significant ability to kill cancer cells at certain concentrations, especially 15.63 µg/mL which reduced cell viability by 44.39%. These results indicate that A. dorsata Binghami nests contain compounds that have the potential as natural anticancer agents, but require further research for fractionation and identification of more specific active compounds and further testing in vivo

Abstract

The snake-head gudgeon or payangka fish (Ophieleotris aporos), tilapia fish or mujair (Oreochromis mossambicus), and marble goby or betutu fish (Oxyeleotris marmorata) are economically important fish in Lake Tondano. However, numerous community activities can disrupt aquatic biodiversity, declining Lake Tondano environmental conditions, and other factors. This study aimed to determine the relationship between length and weight and the habitat conditions of Ophieleotris aporos, Oreochromis mossambicus, and Oxyeleotris marmorata. The method used in this study was purposive sampling with research stations located at Remboken (station 1), Kakas (station 2), and Tondano Estuary (station 3). Sampling was carried out 5 times in every 10 days. The weight and length of the fishes caught in Lake Tondano were 2-60 g and 1-8 cm (Ophieleotris aporos); 9-180 g and 6-25.5 cm (Oreochromis mossambicus); and 16-30 g and 2.6-26.5 cm (Oxyeletotris marmorata), all of them have an allometric growth pattern. Oreochromis mossambicus is the most commonly caught fish in all research stations. The research station with the best level of water fertility is Remboken Station. The habitat characteristic of Lake Tondano was 25-290C of water temperature; brightness of 1.34-2.66 m; depth of 4.23-11.8 m; pH of 6.7-7.8; and dissolved oxygen of 2.27-6.31 mg/L, which still supports the well-being of the fish.

Abstract

Mangrove forest is a type of forest that grows in coastal areas and river estuaries and has three functions, namely ecological, social, and economic functions. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of diversity of mangrove species in Tatengesan Village, Pusomaen District, Southeast Minahasa Regency. Observations were made on a transect with a size of 50 x 25 m consisting of 4 plots. Mangrove sampling was carried out using a plot with a size of 10 x 7 m, using a purposive sampling method. Ecological index analysis includes species diversity, uniformity, and dominance. There are 7 mangrove species namely Bruguiera gymnnorhiza, Rhizophora mangle, Kandelia obovata, Avicennia marina, Rhizophora mucronata, Languncularia racemose, and Ceriops tagal. The species diversity index at the biological level is low.

Abstract

Sondaken Village has three mangrove zones, each with its own type of plant. The first zone, facing directly towards the sea, is dominated by Avicennia sp. The second zone, in the middle, is characterized by Rizophora sp. The third zone, closer to the land, is predominantly Bruguiera sp. Mangroves have different levels of growth, including seedling level, stake level, pole level, and tree level. The purpose of this study was to determine the types and growth levels of mangroves within its zonation in Sondaken Village, which is part of Bunaken National Park Area. This was done using exploratory and descriptive survey methods, by creating 3 plots in each zone from the edge to the center, with sizes of 10x10 m2, 5x5 m2, and 2x2 m2. The research found that mangrove in Sondaken Village consist of Avicennia sp, Rizophora sp, and Bruguiera sp, with the number of individuals per species being 124, 133, and 113 individuals respectively. Each type of mangrove has different growth levels and numbers.

Abstract

Ethnobotany is the study of the relationship between plants and humans, including the use of plants by local communities. Traditional medicinal plants are plants that are often used by local communities for their health benefits. This study aims to describe the types of medicinal plants used and how they are processed using traditional methods in the village of Passi, West Passi subdistrict, Bolaang Mongondow district. This research is descriptive qualitative with an interview method and descriptive analysis technique. The results of this study show that there are 37 types of medicinal plants used with a total of 23 families found. The methods of processing traditional medicinal plants are: boiling, squeezing, soaking, pounding, and not processing. The most commonly used processing method is boiling, with 24 types of medicinal plants using this method. The parts of the plants that are most commonly used are: stems, fruits, flowers, leaves, roots, gel, sap, rhizomes, and tubers. The most commonly used parts are leaves, rhizomes, and fruits.

Abstract

Waterbird diversity in Tondano Lake reflects ecological degradation caused by water-hyacinth invasion and sedimentation. This study analyzed the diversity and abundance of waterbirds in Tondano Lake, Indonesia, across wet (February-May) and dry (June-October) seasons in 2025 to assess their role as bioindicators of ecosystem health. Multi-season observations were carried out monthly along a 6.5 km transect at ten strategic points. Eight waterbird species from three families were recorded, with Egretta garzetta being the most abundant (29.1%) and Alcedo atthis the least (4.8%). The Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H' = 1.92) indicates a moderate level of species diversity, which reflects a pattern of ecological simplification when compared to pristine tropical lakes such as Lake Sentarum (H' = 2.5). Waterbird abundance showed significant negative correlations with water hyacinth density (r = -0.68, p = 0.032) and water depth (r = -0.72, p = 0.019), revealing that invasive vegetation and shoaling are primary drivers of habitat loss. These findings demonstrate that waterbirds function as sensitive bioindicators of ecological stress, highlighting the urgent need for integrated watershed management to prevent further community collapse.

Abstract

Riparian vegetation plays a crucial role in maintaining aquatic ecosystem stability by acting as a natural buffer against anthropogenic pollution and erosion. This study analyzed the composition, structure, and ecological functions of riparian vegetation in Lake Tondano, North Sulawesi, Indonesia, with emphasis on pollutant filtration and sediment stabilization. Field surveys were conducted from May to August 2025 at ten riparian stations surrounding Lake Tondano (4,638 ha). Vegetation sampling used a stratified line transect method with fifty plots of varying sizes according to vegetation strata. Quantitative analysis included relative abundance, frequency, dominance, Importance Value Index (IVI), and the Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H’). Ecological functions were assessed through correlations between vegetation structure and reported nutrient and sediment reduction efficiencies from tropical riparian studies. A total of fifteen dominant riparian species were identified, mainly from the families Poaceae and Cyperaceae. Cyperus papyrus (IVI = 21.81%) and Metroxylon sagu (IVI = 29.65%) functioned as key ecological species, while Ficus septica showed the highest IVI (90.83%), indicating strong structural dominance. The Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H’ = 2.65) reflects moderate to high diversity. Riparian vegetation was estimated to reduce nutrient loads by 40–60% and erosion by 30–50%, highlighting its importance for ecosystem-based lake management.
