Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates bilingual practices in contemporary Arab society by examining code-switching and code-mixing in the film Assal Eswed, directed by Khalid Marei. The study aims to identify the types and linguistic forms of code-switching and code-mixing, as well as the sociolinguistic factors influencing their occurrence. Employing a descriptive-analytical method within a sociolinguistic framework, the data consist of characters’ utterances collected through observation, transcription, and classification. The analysis is based on the theories of code-switching and code-mixing proposed by Suwito and Chaer, the code-switching factors outlined by Hoffmann and Saville-Troike, and the code-mixing factors proposed by Suwito and Suwandi. The findings reveal that all instances of code-switching are external, predominantly involving shifts from Arabic to English, while code-mixing occurs in the form of words, phrases, and clauses. The influencing factors include role identification, register adjustment, explanatory needs, shared mother tongue, lexical gaps, and habitual speech patterns. These findings indicate that Assal Eswed reflects the interaction between language, identity, and globalization in a bilingual Egyptian context, highlighting film as a relevant medium for sociolinguistic analysis and contributing a foundation for broader investigations of language contact, identity, and bilingualism in Arabic media.

Abstract

Arabic grammar studies on ḥarf al-jarr in non-Qur’anic Islamic texts used in educational contexts remain limited, despite their important role in shaping relational meaning within sentences. This study aims to analyze the grammatical functions and semantic implications of ḥarf al-jarr in the book Dinul Islam by Umar bin Abdurrahman. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach using library research methods grounded in Arabic grammatical (nahwu) analysis. The data consisted of linguistic units containing ḥarf al-jarr collected from the entire text of Dinul Islam. Data were analyzed through classification of preposition types, examination of their functions within jar–majrūr constructions, and interpretation of contextual meanings based on syntactic relations and semantic usage. The findings show that the prepositions ‘alā, ilā, bi-, min, and fī exhibit dominant grammatical and semantic tendencies related to obligation, direction, attachment, causality, source, and contextual relations. These functions contribute not only to sentence structure but also to the formation of normative and theological meanings in the text. This study contributes to Arabic linguistic studies by providing an integrative understanding of the relationship between grammatical structure and meaning construction in non-Qur’anic Islamic discourse

Abstract

This research examines the use of kalam khobari (declarative sentences) in Qiṣṣat al-Miʿrāj, a book that documents the spiritual journey of Prophet Muhammad SAW.  The objectives of this study are (1) to identify and classify the types of kalam khobari, including ibtidā’ī, ṭalabī, and inkārī, and (2) to analyze their communicative purposes and functions in conveying spiritual messages. The research employs observation and note-taking as data collection techniques, while using the distributional method to analyze grammatical structures and meanings. The data is presented descriptively and interpretatively. The findings reveal a total of 69 kalam khobari expressions: 5 khabar ibtidā’ī, 53 khabar ṭalabī, and 11 khabar inkārī. The main communicative purposes are categorized into faidah al-khabar (58 instances) and lazīmul faidah (11 instances). Additionally, several secondary functions were identified, including izhār al-fakhr (displaying glory) in 7 sentences, tadzkīr bimā bayna al-marātib (reminding of status differences) in 5, tawbīkh (reproach) in 6, waʿẓ wa irshād (advice and guidance) in 14, izhār al-taḥassur (expressing regret) in 1, and taḥdhīr (warning) in 5 sentences. These results affirm that kalam khobari in Qiṣṣat al-Miʿrāj serves not only an informative function but also contributes significantly to emphasis, correction, motivation, and spiritual guidance within religious communication.

Abstract

The film Alkhallat+ by Fahad Alammari is a social reflection of modern Saudi Arabian society, rich in human values. This study aims to analyze aspects of humanity, both individually and socially, using Lucien Goldmann's genetic structuralism theory. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative, with a dialectical analysis technique between the structure of the film text and the social context of contemporary Arab society. Previous studies show that the film Alkhallat+ a study of lucien goldmann’s genetic structuralism has been analyzed through various approaches, such as structural functionalism, pragmatics, and gender deconstruction. However, there has been no study that specifically focuses on the human aspects within the framework of genetic structuralism. Therefore, this study makes an original contribution by revealing the relationship between the individual conflicts of the characters and the collective worldview of society. The results of the study show that this film contains human facts that include moral conflicts, family tensions, gender bias, and social pressures that represent the reality of modern Arab society.

Abstract

In Arabic grammar, the mubtada’ is generally required to be an isim ma‘rifah. However, Arabic texts frequently employ isim nakirah as the mubtada’, raising questions about the linguistic factors that permit its use. This study aims to identify the types and functions of musawwighāt al-mubtada’ bi an-nakirah in Awa’iq Ath-Thalab by Shaykh Abdus Salam bin Barjas based on Ibn Hisyām al-Anṣārī’s theory in Mughnī al-Labīb. This study employs a qualitative approach using the library research method. Data were collected through reading and note-taking by identifying sentences containing musawwighāt al-mubtada’ bi an-nakirah and analyzing them according to Ibn Hisyām al-Anṣārī’s framework. The findings reveal four types of musawwighāt al-mubtada’ bi an-nakirah: the general nakirah, the qualified nakirah, the nakirah whose predicate is a zharf, jar-majrūr, or jumlah, and the governing nakirah. The identified functions are ta‘mīm and takhṣīṣ. These findings indicate that the mubtada’ nakirah in Awa’iq Ath-Thalab is predominantly used to convey general meanings, advice, and motivation. This study contributes to Arabic syntactic studies by applying the theory of musawwighāt al-mubtada’ bi an-nakirah to the analysis of an Islamic classical text.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how Mahmoud Darwish’s poem ‘Ala Hadzihi Al-Ardh Ma Yastahiqqu Al-Hayah represents life through poetic signs and how forms of resistance are interpreted and articulated based on Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method using library research and documentation techniques. The research data consist of poetic lines containing linguistic signs, imagery, and symbols, which were analyzed at the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings reveal that the representation of life is constructed through poetic signs derived from nature, everyday life, culture, and women's experiences, portraying life as a resilient force that endures amid oppression. Meanwhile, the representation of resistance is interpreted and articulated through collective memory, hope, courage, art, and love for the homeland as expressions of preserving identity and humanity. At the level of myth, the poem constructs a discourse in which life and resistance are inseparable elements in sustaining the identity and existence of the Palestinian people. The findings further indicate that Darwish’s poem represents Palestine not merely as a contested geographical territory but also as a humanitarian space that continues to exist through the representations of life and resistance, while simultaneously conveying an ideology of resilience and the struggle against oppression.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of spiritual longing (kerinduan) in the lyrics of the song Qolbi Fi Madinah by Maher Zain through Roland Barthes' semiotic framework of denotation, connotation, and myth. Religious songs increasingly function as media through which contemporary Muslim spirituality is symbolically expressed, particularly longing toward sacred spaces and the Prophet Muhammad. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical method, eight lyrical units were identified as primary data and analyzed through documentation and library research techniques. The findings indicate that at the denotative level, the lyrics literally express the heart's presence in Madinah, tears of longing, and direct address to the beloved. At the connotative level, these expressions are elaborated into emotional and spiritual meanings such as intense love (‘ishq), inner tranquility, and spiritual ascent. At the mythical level, the lyrics naturalize the belief that longing for Madinah and the Prophet constitutes an ideal form of piety, positioning sacred space as the ultimate locus of spiritual serenity. This study contributes to Arabic literature studies by demonstrating how popular religious songs construct religious ideology through poetic and symbolic language.
