Abstract

Populasi ternak ruminansia, khususnya sapi dan kerbau, memiliki peran penting dalam mendukung ketersediaan daging serta menjaga ketahanan pangan daerah. Perubahan dinamika populasi kedua komoditas ini di Kabupaten Tanah Laut perlu dianalisis secara komprehensif guna memberikan gambaran tren jangka Panjang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tren populasi sapi dan kerbau di Kabupaten Tanah Laut dengan menggunakan metode Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR). Data yang digunakan merupakan data sekunder berbentuk time series periode 2020–2024 yang diperoleh dari Badan Pusat Statistik Kabupaten Tanah Laut, serta proyeksi populasi hingga tahun 2029. Variabel penelitian meliputi gross populasi dan net populasi sapi serta kerbau, yang dianalisis untuk mengetahui pola pertumbuhan jangka panjang. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa populasi sapi mengalami penurunan dengan nilai CAGR sebesar -2,36% per tahun, sedangkan populasi kerbau menunjukkan penurunan yang lebih tajam dengan nilai CAGR sebesar -21,26% per tahun. Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa keberlanjutan populasi sapi masih memiliki peluang untuk dipertahankan melalui pengelolaan yang tepat, sedangkan populasi kerbau berada pada kondisi kritis dan memerlukan intervensi segera. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan perlunya strategi pengelolaan spesifik, antara lain pengendalian pemotongan, peningkatan produktivitas reproduksi, perbaikan manajemen pakan, serta program konservasi plasma nutfah khusus untuk kerbau. Dengan demikian, hasil penelitian ini dapat menjadi dasar bagi pemerintah daerah dan pemangku kepentingan dalam merumuskan kebijakan pembangunan peternakan berkelanjutan di Kabupaten Tanah Laut.

Abstract

Livestock feed plays a vital role in the national food security system as a key determinant of animal protein availability. However, this sector faces significant challenges, including high production costs reaching 60-70% of total operational expenses, raw material price fluctuations, and dependency on imports. This study aims to analyze factors affecting the efficiency of feed production and distribution and to identify relevant strategies to strengthen food security in Indonesia. The method used is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) examining literature published between 2013–2023 from various academic databases. The results indicate that production efficiency can be achieved through the diversification of local feed ingredients based on a circular feed economy (such as agricultural waste fermentation), which can reduce costs by up to 30%, alongside the adoption of processing technology mechanization. Regarding distribution, efficiency is attained through logistic route optimization and integrated inventory management to maintain supply chain resilience against market shocks. This study concludes that the synergy between feed technology innovation and logistic system improvement is crucial to ensuring supply stability, affordability of animal protein, and the sustainability of national food security

Abstract

This study aims to formulate development strategies for the beef cattle fattening business at Energy Equity Epic (Sengkang), Gilireng District, Wajo Regency, South Sulawesi, using the SWOT analysis approach. Despite having strong potential, the business still faces internal challenges such as low farmer knowledge and limited public interest, as well as external threats like market competition and minimal government intervention. The analysis results indicate that SO, WO, ST, and WT strategies can be applied to optimize strengths, seize opportunities, minimize weaknesses, and address threats. WO and WT strategies focus on improving human resource capacity and public awareness, while SO and ST strategies emphasize the use of CSR funding, collaboration with academics, and strengthening market competitiveness. With the proper implementation of these strategies, the cattle fattening business is expected to improve productivity, expand its market, and contribute to national food security.

Abstract

The increasing volume of collagen and gelatin rich by-product waste from the livestock and fishery industries triggers environmental pollution if not managed optimally. This article aims to review the potential utilization of collagen and gelatin hydrolysates from animal waste as functional feed ingredients that support the sustainability of the livestock industry. The review was conducted by searching and analyzing various research findings on animal waste sources, methods of producing bioactive peptides, biological activities, and their effectiveness in animal feed. The application of bioactive peptides in feed has been shown to be able to improve growth performance, feed conversion efficiency, gastrointestinal health, carcass quality, and the resistance of livestock to oxidative stress and disease. In addition to increasing livestock productivity, the utilization of animal waste as a source of bioactive peptides also supports the concept of a circular economy and sustainable waste management. However, its application still faces technical and biological challenges, such as the risk of zoonotic diseases, the halal status of raw materials, quality variability, and the vulnerability of peptides to degradation at high temperatures during feed manufacturing processes such as pelletization. As a solution, the utilization of this waste requires standardization of the extraction process, encapsulation technology to maintain peptide stability, and the implementation of a strict quality assurance system. This innovative approach not only provides a competitively valued alternative protein source but also supports the implementation of circular economy principles and zero-residue waste management.

Abstract

Tropical cattle generally have lower productivity than subtropical cattle due to poor forage quality, high lignin content, heat stress, and inefficient ruminal nutrient utilization. The rumen microbiota, consisting of bacteria, archaea, protozoa, anaerobic fungi, and bacteriophages, plays a crucial role in feed fermentation, microbial protein synthesis, and volatile fatty acid production, which support animal growth and performance. This review aimed to summarize current strategies for rumen microbiome modulation to improve tropical cattle productivity. The novelty of this review lies in integrating various modulation approaches and evaluating their applicability under tropical conditions, particularly in Indonesian smallholder livestock systems and the utilization of locally available feed resources. A narrative review was conducted using 55 peer reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2025 from Scopus, ScienceDirect, Springer, MDPI, and Google Scholar. The findings identified four major microbiome modulation strategies: feed and additive modulation, supplementation with Direct Fed Microbials (DFM), partial defaunation using phytogenic compounds, and molecular approaches utilizing omics technologies and genetic engineering. Supplementation with *Saccharomyces cerevisiae*, *Lactobacillus* spp., and *Bacillus* spp. has been reported to improve fiber digestibility, average daily gain, and immune responses. Partial defaunation using local plants rich in tannins, saponins, and lipids can reduce methane emissions, although production responses vary. Omics technologies provide opportunities for precision interventions through the identification of target genes involved in methanogenesis and fiber degradation. Overall, integrating locally available feeds, feed additives, and microbial supplementation appears to be the most practical strategy for improving rumen efficiency and productivity in Indonesian tropical cattle, while omics technologies offer promising prospects for future precision livestock production.
