Abstract

Abstract

The Science materials on astronomy, particularly solar eclipses, are often perceived as abstract by junior high school students because the objects of study cannot be directly presented in the classroom. The limitations of two-dimensional (2D) media lead to low conceptual understanding and scientific literacy. This study aims to develop a solar eclipse diorama as an economical and interactive alternative for science learning media. The research method employed is Research and Development (R&D) using the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). The research was conducted up to the Develop stage, limited to product functionality testing without extensive field trials. The research subjects involved an analysis of the characteristics of junior high school students in the transition from concrete to formal operational stages. The results showed that the diorama developed using styrofoam, wire, and LED lights effectively visualized the relative positions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun and the formation of umbra and penumbra shadows. The diorama functions well in simulating earth rotation, the lunar revolution, and the eclipse phenomena. This study concludes that the solar eclipse diorama is suitable for use as a practical and efficient alternative learning medium, especially for schools with limited laboratory facilities, to increase students' interest and conceptual understanding.

Abstract

Strengthening students’ competencies, including critical thinking and creativity, is an essential part of implementing the Pancasila Student Profile within the Merdeka Curriculum. One instructional approach that can support the development of these competencies is Project-Based Learning (PjBL). This study aims to analyze the effect of implementing Project-Based Learning through a mini hydropower model project on students’ critical thinking and creativity in science learning on renewable energy topics. The study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design of the non-equivalent control group type. The research was conducted in the odd semester of 2025 with ninth-grade students at a junior high school in Mataram City. The sample consisted of two classes, namely an experimental class of 31 students and a control class of 29 students. The research instrument was an essay test consisting of 10 items, including 5 items to measure critical thinking and 5 items to measure creativity. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-way MANOVA. The results showed that the mean scores of students’ critical thinking and creativity in the experimental class were higher than those in the control class. The MANOVA results indicated a significance value of less than 0.05, demonstrating that the implementation of Project-Based Learning through the mini hydropower project had a significant effect on students’ critical thinking and creativity. Project-based learning in renewable energy topics not only enhances higher-order thinking skills but also supports the strengthening of Pancasila Student competencies and is relevant to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in quality education and clean, sustainable energy.

Abstract

The low 2022 PISA scores highlight a serious challenge for scientific literacy in Indonesia, triggering the need for a transformation from conventional models toward pedagogical innovation. This study aims to analyze effective learning models for enhancing scientific literacy in the digital era. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method with the PRISMA model, this research reviewed 20 selected articles within the 2019–2026 interval. The analysis identified nine primary models and approaches proven to significantly improve scientific literacy: inquiry-based learning, problem-based learning (PBL), project-based learning (PjBL), STEAM-PjBL, guided inquiry, discovery learning, differentiated instruction, the ethnoscience approach, and the RADEC model. Findings indicate that these models, supported by technology integration such as interactive e-books and digital media, produce N-Gain scores in the medium to high categories. The ethnoscience approach also proved to enhance learning relevance through local wisdom. Despite their effectiveness, implementation still faces obstacles related to school facilities and teacher competency readiness. This study concludes that the synergy between student-centered innovative models and the reinforcement of teacher TPACK is crucial for creating meaningful, competitive, and adaptive science education for the modern era.
