Abstract

Biotechnology plays a crucial role in addressing food security by enhancing production yields, optimizing the use of marginal land, and improving resistance to pests and diseases. However, the development of agricultural biotechnology research in Indonesia still lags significantly behind other countries. This study presents comparative information on biotechnology approaches applied to rice and corn variety development in Indonesia. The Narrative Literature Review (NLR) method was used, compiling secondary literature (journal articles/books) indexed in Google Scholar from 2020 to 2025 and integrating information on related topics through descriptive analysis. The study revealed that the application of biotechnology to rice variety development is more varied than to corn varieties. However, the application of biotechnology shares the same priority goal: producing superior rice and corn varieties in various aspects of the environment, quality, and durability. Complex policies, limited resources, and social accessibility are the main challenges facing biotechnology development in Indonesia.

Abstract

Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica) is one of the leading plantation commodities whose growth is strongly influenced by environmental conditions, particularly the availability of shade from canopy trees. This study was conducted to analyze the influence of suren trees (Toona sureni) on the growth of Arabica coffee of the Ateng Super variety in Genteng Village, Sukasari District, Sumedang Regency. The research was carried out in April–May 2025 on a 0.7 ha community owned land with a sampling intensity of 15%. The observed parameters included total height, clear bole height, and diameter of suren shade trees, as well as the number and length of productive branches of coffee plants. Data were analyzed using classical assumption tests and multiple regression with t-tests through RStudio software.The results showed that the morphological characteristics of suren trees total height, clear bole height, and diameter did not directly influence the number or length of productive branches of Arabica coffee. Nevertheless, the presence of suren as a shade tree played an important role in creating a microclimate conducive to coffee growth. Microclimate observations indicated that suren shade could maintain ideal temperature and humidity ranges, namely 22–24°C and 72–83%, thereby helping stabilize the growing environment for coffee plants. With these capabilities, suren trees are considered suitable as shade species in Arabica coffee agroforestry systems. Their presence does not hinder coffee plant growth; instead, they contribute to establishing optimal environmental conditions for vegetative development and overall plant productivity. Abstract

Coffee (Coffea sp.) is one of the contributing commodities of non-timber forest products in the Indonesian economy. Loa Village is one of the coffee producing centers whose land is located among the forest stands of protected forest areas managed by Perum Perhutani, Bandung Regency. To increase the productivity of coffee plants in Loa Village and minimize the environmental impact of coffee skin waste, this study aims to examine the effect of coffee skin waste compost fertilizer on the growth of arabica coffee seedlings in Loa Village. The research was conducted from September to December 2024 at the Faculty of Forestry, Winaya Mukti University using the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) method consisting of 4 treatments and six replications. Treatments: P0 = 0% coffee waste + 100% soil, P1 = 25% coffee waste + 75% soil, P2 = 50% coffee waste + 50% soil, P3 = 75% coffee waste + 25% soil. Observations were carried out for 3 months with an interval of one month. Data collection includes the results of measuring the height and diameter of seedlings that are studied for differences in each treatment using manual average calculations and analyzing their effectiveness using SPSS version 25. The results obtained the best compost fertilizer formulation from coffee skin waste recommended is 25% coffee skin waste compost fertilizer and 75% soil media. This composition significantly increased the height of Arabica coffee seedlings in the 3rd month and stem diameter in the 2nd month after fertilizer application.

Abstract

This study aims to assess visitors’ perceptions of the potential and feasibility of Taman Hutan Raya (Tahura) Gunung Kunci in Sumedang Regency as a forest healing destination. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach through a visitor perception survey focusing on facilities, services, and environmental comfort. Data were collected from three main sites amphitheater, viewing post, and bunker with 40 respondents selected using accidental sampling. The results revealed that most visitors rated the area as “Excellent” (60%) and “Good” (40%) in terms of facilities, services, and comfort. Overall, the facilities in Tahura Gunung Kunci are adequate and safe, although some areas, such as shelters and walkways around the bunker, require maintenance. The visitors’ positive perception indicates that Tahura Gunung Kunci has strong potential to be developed as a forest healing-based ecotourism destination that promotes health, education, and community well-being.

Abstract

Kerusakan lahan merupakan permasalahan serius akibat ketidakseimbangan pengelolaan hutan antar aspek ekologi dan sosial – ekonomi. Lahan yang teridentifikasi sebagai lahan rusak dikenal dengan lahan kritis. Upaya pengendalian lahan kritis dapat dilakukan melalui kegiatan Rehabilitasi Hutan dan Lahan (RHL) dengan penanaman jenis Multi Purpose Tree Species (MPTS) yang memiliki nilai ekologis dan ekonomis, seperti alpukat (Persea americana) dan petai (Parkia speciosa). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi kesesuaian lahan bagi pengembangan alpukat dan petai di Desa Cipicung, Kecamatan Jatigede, Kabupaten Sumedang, Jawa Barat. Metode penelitian menggunakan purposive sampling dengan intensitas sampling 5% pada lima plot untuk masing-masing jenis tanaman. Analisis kesesuaian lahan dilakukan menggunakan metode matching dan scoring terhadap delapan parameter, yaitu temperatur, curah hujan, kelembapan, tekstur tanah, permeabilitas tanah, pH tanah, kemiringan lereng, dan bahaya erosi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kelas kesesuaian lahan aktual untuk tanaman alpukat dan petai pada lahan RHL Desa Cipicung termasuk dalam kategori cukup sesuai (S2) dengan nilai rata-rata skor masing-masing 21,8 dan 24,2. Faktor pembatas utama meliputi temperatur, curah hujan, permeabilitas tanah, kemiringan lereng, dan bahaya erosi. Upaya peningkatan kesesuaian lahan secara potensial dapat dilakukan melalui penerapan teknik konservasi tanah dan air secara mekanik dan vegetatif yang tepat untuk mendukung keberhasilan rehabilitasi hutan secara berkelanjutan.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to enhance the knowledge and capacity of the Berkat Farmer Group in Noekele Village, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, through the implementation of a sustainable agrosilvopastoral system based on multifunctional crops, namely gmelina, Gamma Umami grass, and butterfly pea flowers. The program was implemented using an educative and participatory approach, with evaluation instruments in the form of assessment rubrics analyzed descriptively. The results of the program showed an improvement in community understanding of the agrosilvopastoral concept and the benefits of multifunctional crops in supporting sustainable livestock feed availability. The implementation of the integrated planting system was considered easy to apply and has the potential to improve land-use efficiency, livestock feed stability, and community welfare. This activity demonstrates that an agrosilvopastoral approach based on multifunctional crops is a relevant strategy for sustainable land and livestock management in East Nusa Tenggara.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Studies on vegetation biodiversity and carbon stock estimation are becoming increasingly significant in response to global climate change concerns and the growing demand for sustainable agricultural management in tropical drylands. Nevertheless, research focusing on cocoa-based agroforestry systems in eastern Indonesia, particularly related to vegetation structure and carbon sequestration potential, is still relatively scarce. This study was conducted to examine vegetation distribution and estimate carbon stocks within cocoa-based agroforestry systems in eastern Indonesia. A literature review method was applied by analyzing previous studies concerning the characteristics of cocoa agroforestry, especially vegetation composition, stand structure, and total carbon storage. The analysis used a descriptive quantitative approach based on secondary data of vegetation biomass and soil organic carbon. The findings revealed that the cocoa-based agroforestry systems evaluated in this study stored approximately 56.9 tons ha⁻¹ of carbon. Vegetation distribution in the agrisilvicultural system dominated most of the study sites, as reflected by the highest Important Value Index (IVI) recorded for Swietenia mahagoni. This dominance was primarily observed at the pole stage and was closely associated with ecological conditions and vegetation management practices in semi-arid environments. These results suggest that proper management of shade-tree composition plays a crucial role in improving ecological functions and increasing carbon storage capacity in cocoa-based agroforestry systems. ABSTRAK Penelitian mengenai biodiversitas vegetasi dan estimasi cadangan karbon menjadi semakin penting seiring meningkatnya perhatian global terhadap perubahan iklim dan kebutuhan akan pengelolaan pertanian berkelanjutan di kawasan tropis kering. Meskipun demikian, kajian tentang sistem agroforestri berbasis kakao di Indonesia bagian timur, khususnya yang berkaitan dengan struktur vegetasi dan potensi penyimpanan karbon, masih tergolong terbatas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi pola sebaran vegetasi serta mengestimasi cadangan karbon pada sistem agroforestri berbasis kakao di wilayah Indonesia timur. Metode yang digunakan adalah studi literatur dengan menelaah berbagai hasil penelitian mengenai karakteristik agroforestri kakao, terutama terkait komposisi vegetasi, struktur tegakan, dan total simpanan karbon. Analisis data dilakukan secara deskriptif kuantitatif menggunakan data sekunder berupa biomassa vegetasi dan karbon organik tanah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sistem agroforestri berbasis kakao dalam kajian ini memiliki total simpanan karbon sebesar 56,9 ton/ha. Sebaran vegetasi pada sistem agrisilvikultur mendominasi sebagian besar lokasi penelitian, yang tercermin dari tingginya nilai Indeks Nilai Penting (IVI) pada jenis Swietenia mahagoni. Dominasi tersebut terutama ditemukan pada tingkat tiang dan dipengaruhi oleh kondisi ekologis serta pola pengelolaan vegetasi di wilayah semi-kering. Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa pengaturan komposisi tanaman penaung memiliki peranan penting dalam meningkatkan fungsi ekologis sekaligus kapasitas penyimpanan karbon pada sistem agroforestri berbasis kakao.

Abstract

Water resources play a crucial role in supporting socio-economic activities, particularly in semi-arid regions characterized by limited and uneven water availability. Increasing pressure on water resources requires a comprehensive understanding of utilization patterns and economic value across sectors. This study aims to analyze water use, estimate its economic value, and evaluate the efficiency of water utilization across multiple sectors at Baumata Spring, East Nusa Tenggara. A quantitative approach was applied using a hybrid economic valuation method combining the Market Price Method (MPM), cost-based approach, and production-based approach. The results show that total water utilization reached 4,554,058 m³/year, dominated by the agricultural sector (90.40%). The total economic value amounted to IDR 2.46 billion per year, with the largest contributions coming from domestic and bottled water industry sectors, while agriculture contributed relatively little despite consuming most of the water. Efficiency analysis reveals significant disparities among sectors, ranging from IDR 5.01/m³ to IDR 1,214,486/m³. These findings indicate that the economic value of water is not solely determined by the volume of use, but by each sector’s capacity to generate added value. Therefore, water resource management should be oriented toward optimizing allocation based on efficiency and economic value while considering social equity and food security.

Abstract

Kemiskinan adalah masalah yang kompleks dan multidimensi, yang mencakup masalah pendapatan dan ketidakmampuan untuk mengakses hak-hak dasar (misalnya pendidikan, perawatan kesehatan, perlindungan sosial). Analisis regresi data panel merupakan metode yang tepat untuk memeriksa masalah kemiskinan, karena mengintegrasikan data cross-sectional dan time series. Penelitian sebelumnya biasanya hanya menggunakan satu jenis metode regresi data panel. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memodelkan pengaruh Indeks Pembangunan Manusia (IPM) dan pertumbuhan Produk Domestik Regional Bruto (PDRB) terhadap jumlah orang miskin di kabupaten/kota di provinsi Nusa Tenggara Timur menggunakan panel data regresi selama periode 2022-2024. Common Effect Model (CEM), Random Effect Model (REM), dan Fixed Effect Model (FEM) dilakukan dalam penelitian ini. Model dipilih menggunakan uji Chow, uji Hausman, uji Lagrangian Multiplier. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Random Efffect Model (REM) adalah metode yang paling tepat dengan persamaan yang diestimasi. Berdasarkan metode REM, IPM mempunyai pengaruh negatif dan signifikan terhadap jumlah orang miskin, yang menunjukkan bahwa peningkatan pembangunan manusia berkontribusi terhadap kemiskinan. Sebaliknya, pertumbuhan PDRB memiliki efek positif namun tidak signifikan secara statistik, yang menunjukkan bahwa pertumbuhan ekonomi itu sendiri tidak mungkin dapat mengurangi kemiskinan tanpa kebijakan yang adil dan pembangunan yang inklusif. Studi-studi mendatang dapat mempertimbangkan untuk mengintegrasikan variabel-variabel sosioekonomi tambahan guna memberikan wawasan yang lebih mendalam tentang dinamika kemiskinan, serta mengeksplorasi pendugaan alternatif dalam metodologi REM.

Abstract

Cocoa is an important plantation commodity with a significant role in Indonesia's economy. This research aims to understand cocoa-based agroforestry by leveraging traditional management in Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. The study analyzes the cocoa management practices of smallholder cocoa farmers in Sikka Regency. Qualitative research methods are used to gain understanding of the local community's traditional management of cocoa-based agroforestry from focused literature study. The research results are expected to provide a better understanding of cocoa cultivation and conservation practices of smallholder farmers in the region, and to offer recommendations for enhancing productivity and sustainability of cocoa plantations in Sikka Regency
