Abstract

This study aims to identify the impact (implications) of Takko Binoto in Mandailing marriage customs on women's rights and customary law. This study was conducted specifically in South Kauman, Pasaman Regency. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques through observation, interviews with 13 informants, and documentation. Data validity testing uses technical triangulation. Data analysis techniques are carried out through the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the stages of marriage implementation through Takko Binoto begin with the process of reporting the Takko Binoto perpetrator to Harajaon, the customary deliberation process (marpokat), the diplomatic process on the part of women, the determination of sinamot (dowry) and the day of inauguration and finally the maradat process. The influence of Takko Binoto on women's position and rights includes changes in social status and acceptance within the husband's family, high dependence on customary law and limited support networks, unclear inheritance and economic rights dependent on the kindness of the husband's family, and psychological pressure and the burden of proving oneself. This research emphasizes the importance of critically reevaluating this customary practice to protect legal certainty and women's fundamental rights in society. The critical revaluation referred to is not merely reassessing the procedures for implementing the tradition but rather fundamentally re examining how this practice has a direct impact on the certainly of customary law and the fulfilment of woman’s fundamental rights.

Abstract

The Mandi Kaek tradition is a cultural heritage of the Jambi Malay community that contains spiritual and social values. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the tradition as well as the meanings of spirituality and social aspects contained within it for the people of Teluk Kuali Village, Tebo Regency. The research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results show that the Mandi Kaek tradition is still consistently practiced on the seventh day after birth, maintaining the core ritual structure, although there have been adaptations in location and variations in scale based on the family's economic conditions. The meaning of spirituality is reflected in the recitation of prayers and verses as an expression of gratitude, an effort for the baby's spiritual protection, and the inner experience of the parents. The social meaning is evident in the tradition's function as an official announcement of a new community member, a space for interaction and strengthening social ties, and the affirmation of the principle of reciprocity in community life. The Mandi Kaek tradition serves as a social glue that strengthens the cohesion and collective identity of the Jambi Malay community amidst changing times.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the form of ethnonationalism reflected in the Serak gulo tradition among the Indian Muslim community in Padang Selatan District, as well as to identify obstacles and efforts in maintaining the Serak gulo tradition. The Serak gulo tradition is a local wisdom that not only has religious meaning but also serves as a form of gratitude and fulfillment of vows and strengthens social solidarity. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation with informants consisting of Indian Muslim community leaders, tradition practitioners and surrounding communities of different ethnicities. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions using triangulation techniques to maintain data validity. The results of the study show that ethnonationalism in the Serak gulo tradition is reflected through the meaning, symbols, and stages of the tradition that emphasize the cultural identity of the Indian Muslim community. The stages of the tradition are carried out sequentially starting from collecting sugar, wrapping, reciting prayers, to the process of distributing sugar to the community. However, there are obstacles such as the distribution of sugar that is not carried out simultaneously, thus reducing the value of togetherness. Efforts made to maintain this tradition include hereditary preservation, strengthening the values of togetherness, and active community involvement in every implementation.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the Turun Tanah Tradition as a medium for developing civic cultural character and to identify the civic culture values contained within it. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation using purposive sampling techniques. The informants consisted of traditional leaders, families carrying out the tradition, and community members involved in the activities. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of the Turun Tanah Tradition is still carried out through several stages, namely family deliberation, preparation of equipment and necessities, communal cooking activities, as well as prayers and ritual ceremonies. This tradition contains civic culture values such as kinship, religiosity, social values, and economic values that play a role in shaping community character. Through this tradition, social interaction, the spirit of mutual cooperation, and a sense of togetherness are created, which strengthen the cultural identity of the community. However, the implementation of the Turun Tanah Tradition has undergone changes due to the influence of modernization and demands for efficiency, causing its implementation to become simpler and limited to the family sphere, which has resulted in decreased community participation on a broader scale. Therefore, preservation efforts are needed through increasing public awareness, involving younger generations in every stage of the tradition, and adapting the tradition to contemporary developments without eliminating its core values.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the increasing potential spread of radicalism among adolescents, which may influence students’ cognitive patterns, attitudes, and behaviors. Schools, as formal educational institutions, play a strategic role in preventing the development of radical ideologies, particularly through Civic Education (PPKn). This study aims to describe the implementation of radicalism prevention among adolescents through PPKn learning at SMAS Nurul Ikhlas X Koto, Tanah Datar Regency, and to identify the supporting factors in its implementation. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of PPKn teachers, the principal, vice principals in curriculum and student affairs, and students. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation studies, including lesson plans (RPP) and school regulations. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that radicalism prevention is implemented through democratic learning practices, the modeling of moderate attitudes, respect for students’ opinions, the internalization of anti-radical values, and the prevention of student grouping based on particular viewpoints. In addition, supporting factors include an open and inclusive school environment, the application of universal values, the involvement of alumni and parents, and sustained communication. These findings suggest that PPKn learning functions as a strategic medium for character formation and the strengthening of students’ tolerance, thereby contributing to the prevention of radicalism among adolescents.

This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design and was conducted at Sanggar Ranah Tigo Raso, Pauh District, Padang City. Research informants were determined through purposive sampling, consisting of Silek Pauh trainers, training participants, participants’ parents, community leaders, youth, and local residents. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation studies. Data validity was tested through technique triangulation, while data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that Silek Pauh plays a role as an effective form of non-formal education in shaping the moral values of young people. The values of discipline and self-control are instilled in a structured and sustainable manner through adherence to training rules, trainers’ role modeling, habituation of attitudes, as well as the internalization of Minangkabau customary values and philosophy. This process encourages the formation of responsible attitudes, the ability to manage emotions, and social awareness, which are reflected in participants’ behavior in family and community environments. These findings affirm that Silek Pauh has a significant contribution in supporting the development of young people’s character based on local cultural values.
