Abstract

Being able to last through a race is largely determined through training and endurance ability in swimming. Sleep is also a way to improve recovery and thus is regarded as a way to modify recovery and support adaptation to cardiorespiratory activities of young athletes by experts. Not many studies have looked at this relationship between sleep quality and sport performance in adolescent swimmers from clubs compared to that of elite swimmers or college players. Through this study, we wanted to establish whether or not sleep and cardio capacity can go hand in hand with our teenage swimmers from Ladies Swimming Club. We applied a numerical correlational model to the situation and a complete sampling of the population as only 10 swimmers were on the register (ages 13 to 17, mean age was 14.8 and SD was ±1.48). The instrument employed to evaluate sleep quality of athletes during the study was the Pittsburgh Sleepiness Scale (PSQI) and VO₂max was calculated from the Multistage Fitness Test (Bleep Test) using Ramsbottom formula. Analysis of the data included the Shapiro-Wilk test of normality and then the Pearson correlation if there was no departure from normal distribution. Findings: The PSQI range was 2 to 13 (M = 6.30, SD = 3.09); 60% of swimmers were considered as having a good sleeping habit while the remaining 40% slept not too well. The estimated VO₂max values varied from 33.32 to 53.50 ml/kg/min (M = 44.54; SD = 7.51). Both PSQI and VO₂max measures were within the normal distribution (PSQI: W = 0.909, p = 0.271; VO₂max: W = 0.876, p = 0.118). The result shows that there was a strong and negative relationship between PSQI and VO₂max with a significant statistical level (r = -0.910, p = 0.00025), meaning that sleep quality was the major reason behind such variations in endurance (R² = 0.8288). Our findings demonstrated that sleep quality is linked with cardiorespiratory endurance. Lower quality sleep was associated with lower endurance. Areas of use: It would be beneficial for coaches and other professionals involved in athletes' development or training to include the monitoring of athletes' night time sleep and provide education on sleeping habits into their daily routines, since they are responsible for a large part of the training plan and hence of the athletes' period and recovery as well.

Abstract

Regular participation in physical activity is essential for adolescents' physical and psychological well-being. However, students often demonstrate varying levels of participation in school-based physical education programs due to differences in motivation and personal interest. This study examined the relationship between student interest and discipline in participating in the Senam PAHAMI morning exercise program at SMKN 4 Padang, Indonesia. Drawing on Self-Determination Theory and Expectancy-Value Theory, the study hypothesized that higher levels of student interest would be associated with greater discipline. A quantitative correlational research design was employed involving 427 Grade X and XI students, representing the entire eligible population through a census approach. Data were collected using Likert-scale questionnaires measuring student interest and discipline. The instruments demonstrated good internal consistency, with Cronbach's alpha coefficients of 0.82 and 0.85, respectively. Data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov normality test, Pearson product-moment correlation, and the coefficient of determination. The findings indicated moderately high levels of both interest (M = 57.70, SD = 4.62) and discipline (M = 69.33, SD = 5.49). A statistically significant positive correlation was found between student interest and discipline (r = 0.413, p < 0.001). The coefficient of determination showed that student interest explained 17.02% of the variance in discipline, while the remaining variance may be attributed to factors such as teacher supervision, school culture, peer influence, and individual characteristics. These findings support Self-Determination Theory and Expectancy-Value Theory, emphasizing that fostering students' intrinsic interest can enhance discipline in school physical activity programs. The results provide practical implications for physical education teachers and school administrators in promoting student engagement and participation.

Abstract

Beach volleyball is contested on deformable sand under variable outdoor conditions, creating movement and load demands that differ from indoor volleyball and may challenge the assumptions of athlete-monitoring technologies. This systematic review mapped technology-based monitoring systems used in beach volleyball and synthesised evidence on their validity, reliability, applications, limitations, and research gaps. The review followed PRISMA 2020 and searched Scopus using a structured Boolean strategy. Of 403 records identified, 54 full texts were assessed and 22 peer-reviewed studies published from 2014 to 2026 were included. Six monitoring modalities were identified: satellite/local positioning systems, wearable inertial measurement units, computer vision, machine-learning analytics, video-based mobile applications, and wearable eye-tracking. Validation evidence was heterogeneous and was reported only where individual studies evaluated measurement properties. In official competition, an inertial device achieved 96.29% overall jump-detection sensitivity, while another IMU study reported jump-count precision of 0.975 and recall of 0.836–1.000 depending on jump type. For the My Jump 2 application, reliability ranged from ICC 0.91–0.97 under controlled sand-box conditions but only ICC 0.447–0.594 in open-field sand conditions. Direct comparison of GNSS and ultra-wideband systems also showed significant differences across kinematic outputs, indicating that their values should not be treated as interchangeable. The evidence therefore supports descriptive profiling and role-specific load monitoring, but not yet universal thresholds, cross-device benchmarking, or injury prediction. Future research should prioritise multi-database evidence retrieval, independent multi-reviewer screening, sex- and action-stratified validation, prospective injury surveillance, and multimodal integration.

Abstract

The meeting point of artificial intelligence and wearable sensing has quietly reshaped precision sport psychology. Athletes can now be monitored continuously, with cognitive and emotional states tracked at the individual level, something traditional self-report methods never quite captured. Yet the evidence on how AI actually turns physiological signals into psychological insight is scattered across sport science, engineering, and digital health. This systematic review follows the PRISMA 2020 framework to pull that evidence together. A structured Scopus search returned 112 records published between 2020 and 2025. After duplicates were removed and screening ran in two stages, 74 studies fell away at the title-and-abstract stage and 28 more after full-text assessment. That left 10 studies for qualitative synthesis, with 40 contextual records supporting the analysis. Eligible studies had to involve athlete populations, wearable physiological sensing, AI or machine-learning techniques, and psychological, cognitive, or affective outcomes. Three themes stood out. Electroencephalography combined with deep learning dominates cognitive-state classification. Multimodal integration of cardiac, electrodermal, muscular, and respiratory signals supports emotion and stress recognition. And telling psychological stress apart from physical stress remains the core methodological hurdle. What the evidence shows is that personalized, real-time psychological feedback is technically within reach, but it is still held back by small samples, laboratory settings, and limited external validation. Future work should push toward ecologically valid field studies, standardized labeling of psychological states, explainable AI models, and stronger data privacy for athletes. That is the path to real deployment in competitive sport.

Abstract

Athletes’ emotional, cognitive, and motivational states can change rapidly, yet conventional assessment often relies on intermittent self-report. This systematic review synthesized evidence on (1) psychological states targeted by machine learning (ML) and multimodal artificial intelligence (AI), (2) data modalities and model architectures used for prediction, and (3) methodological maturity of the evidence base. Following PRISMA 2020, Scopus was searched in TITLE-ABS-KEY fields for studies published from 2020 to 2025. Of 113 records identified, 4 duplicates were removed, 109 titles/abstracts were screened, 25 full texts were assessed, and 10 studies met the eligibility criteria. Screening used predefined criteria; no independent duplicate-screening record was retained, so a retrospective inter-rater coefficient could not be calculated. Evidence was synthesized narratively through thematic coding and descriptive bibliometric analysis, with study reporting quality appraised using a four-domain FICO rubric (0–2 per domain; retention threshold ≥4/8). Four themes emerged: multimodal emotion recognition, deep hybrid architectures, continuous/personalized affective-state prediction, and limited ecological validation. Multimodal fusion generally outperformed unimodal approaches, but small samples, heterogeneous labels, limited external validation, and weak interpretability constrain confidence in reported accuracy. Future work should prioritize participant-level validation, standardized psychological constructs, explainable models, and prospective field testing.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kualitas teknik start renang gaya bebas pada atlet Women Swimming Club berdasarkan delapan indikator, yaitu posisi siap di balok start, reaksi terhadap aba-aba start, tolakan kaki, melayang, masuk ke dalam air, posisi streamline, gerakan bawah air, dan transisi ke renang gaya bebas. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kuantitatif melibatkan 10 atlet melalui total sampling. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi dan dokumentasi video dengan dua percobaan, dan dinilai oleh tiga expert judgment menggunakan lembar observasi skala 1–3. Data dianalisis menggunakan statistik deskriptif skor rata-rata dan persentase. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan teknik start berada pada kategori baik dengan rata-rata skor 2,39. Sebanyak 7 atlet (70%) berkategori baik dan 3 atlet (30%) cukup. Skor tertinggi terdapat pada posisi siap dan reaksi terhadap aba-aba, masing-masing 2,78, sedangkan terendah pada masuk ke dalam air 1,90, posisi melayang 2,17, dan gerakan bawah air 2,10. Dengan demikian, latihan perlu diprioritaskan pada fase melayang, masuk air, serta gerakan bawah air

Abstract

This systematic review synthesised evidence on the applications, effectiveness, engagement, acceptability, and responsible design of large language model (LLM)- and AI-based conversational agents for mental health and psychological well-being. Following the PRISMA 2020 framework, Scopus, PubMed, and ScienceDirect were searched for English-language publications from 2023 to 2026. The search identified 388 records; 16 duplicates were removed, 372 records were screened, 56 full texts were assessed, and 21 eligible publications were retained. Because the corpus combined randomized and quasi-experimental studies with single-arm, qualitative, developmental, protocol, conceptual, and review publications, findings were synthesised thematically rather than pooled in a meta-analysis. Four themes emerged: effectiveness and outcomes; design and development; assessment and evaluation; and user perception, acceptability, and ethics. Controlled studies reported promising short-term improvements in depression, anxiety, stress, and well-being, while feasibility and qualitative studies indicated generally favourable acceptability but also concerns about engagement decline, privacy, emotional dependence, bias, transparency, and crisis management. The evidence supports conversational AI primarily as a supervised adjunct to mental-health care rather than an autonomous clinical decision-maker. Major limitations were heterogeneous designs and outcomes, limited long-term follow-up, geographic concentration, and incomplete reporting of screening reliability and search dates in the original review record. Future research should use adequately powered, multi-site trials, standardised outcomes, explicit safety benchmarks, and transparent human-oversight procedures.

Abstract

Competitive and developmental gymnastics involve intensive training, performance evaluation, and, in several disciplines, explicit body-shape and weight expectations. These conditions may create psychological risks, but evidence is dispersed across disordered eating, body image, mental health, and psychological-skills research. This systematic review synthesised empirical evidence on psychological health in gymnasts across competitive, recreational, developmental, and post-competitive contexts published between 2021 and 2026. The review followed PRISMA 2020 and used Scopus, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. Eligible studies were peer-reviewed empirical investigations involving gymnasts and reporting at least one psychological or mental-health outcome. From 398 records identified, 11 duplicates were removed; 387 records were screened, 47 full texts were assessed, and 20 studies were included. Methodological quality was appraised using the MMAT 2018, with domain-level ratings retained for transparency and no study excluded solely because of quality. The synthesis identified three analytical themes: (1) disordered eating, body image, and weight pressure; (2) mental health and psychological consequences; and (3) psychological skills and regulatory resources. The evidence indicates that disordered eating and body-image concerns are concentrated in higher-pressure contexts, whereas adaptive self-talk, task-involving motivational climates, supportive coach relationships, and regulated perfectionism are potential protective resources. Because most studies were cross-sectional and heterogeneous, the findings should not be interpreted causally and no meta-analysis was conducted. Prospective longitudinal, intervention, and multi-method studies are needed, particularly in under-represented disciplines and among male gymnasts.
