Abstract

The digital transformation has fundamentally altered the landscape of Islamic dawah (preaching). However, existing studies remain fragmented across isolated platforms, specific demographics, or singular aspects of digital religious communication, lacking an integrated analytical framework that systematically maps the interrelationship between benefits, obstacles, and mitigation strategies. This qualitative study addresses this gap by conducting a systematic literature review (SLR) following the PRISMA protocol, synthesizing findings from 35 peer-reviewed articles published between 2022 and 2025, sourced from Scopus-indexed journals and Indonesian SINTA-accredited publications (SINTA 2–4). Employing thematic analysis based on the Braun and Clarke framework, this research identifies four categories of benefits (expanded reach transcending geographical boundaries, enhanced youth engagement, interactive religious discourse, and democratization of religious knowledge), four categories of obstacles (misinformation proliferation, content verification challenges, commercialization of religious messages, and algorithmic barriers), and three strategic responses (strategic content planning, ethical guidelines adherence through Maqasid al-Shariah, and multi-stakeholder collaboration). The study proposes an original Digital Dawah Ecosystem Framework that conceptualizes the dialectical relationship between enabling and constraining factors in digital religious communication, revealing a "digital dawah paradox" in which the same platform affordances that facilitate expanded outreach simultaneously create conditions for misinformation and content distortion. Theoretically, this study extends the Uses and Gratifications Theory into the domain of religious digital communication. It contributes to the Mediatization of Religion theory by demonstrating how platform logics reshape dawah practices. Practically, the findings offer an operationalized strategic model for dawah practitioners, religious institutions, policymakers, and platform operators seeking to optimize digital religious communication while maintaining Islamic ethical integrity.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aimed to map how classroom communication education practices transform into citizens' critical participation capacities in the public sphere, addressing fundamental questions raised by the digital public sphere's transformation, marked by polarization, misinformation, and discursive fragmentation. Methodology: A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using the PRISMA approach was applied, based on 47 Scopus- and Sinta-indexed articles published between 2015 and 2025. Main Findings: The findings reveal four main dimensions connecting communication education with critical citizenship: critical media literacy, dialogic pedagogy, deliberative digital participation, and resistance to dominant discourses. The study concludes that communication education should be reconceptualized as a transformative social praxis, integrating Habermasian public sphere theory, Freirean critical pedagogy, and digital citizenship approaches to address contemporary challenges to deliberative democracy. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty lies in the systematic integration of Habermasian public sphere theory, Freirean critical pedagogy, and digital citizenship approaches into a single transformative social praxis framework for communication education specifically mapping how classroom practices translate into critical participation capacities in the digital public sphere an integrative model not previously documented in the context of addressing polarization, misinformation, and discursive fragmentation in contemporary deliberative democracy.

Abstract

This study examines Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in Islamic Cultural History to strengthen Rahmatan lil Alamin character at two Indonesian madrasahs. A naturalistic qualitative multiple case study was used, with interviews, observation, document analysis, and written surveys of 101 students. Findings indicate that when PBL is systematically designed around value-laden historical problems and structured reflection, most students show observable gains in tolerance, empathy, critical thinking, and collaboration. However, character internalization depth varies and depends on the teacher’s role as values coach, institutional support, and topic suitability. Contradictory data include one failed PBL session, 22% student frustration, and persistent time constraints. The study offers two moderate-novelty contributions: the Problem-Based Rahmatan lil Alamin Learning (PBRAL) model and the TPACKV framework (adding Values to TPACK). These are presented as context-specific, not universal claims. Practical implications call for sustained, practice-based teacher professional development.

Abstract

This study addresses a gap in curriculum-aligned interactive mobile media for high school Arabic learning. Although smartphones are common, Arabic instruction remains dominated by lectures and workbooks, limiting multimodal practice and formative feedback. This research develops and validates the An-Nasr mobile learning application through the first three ADDIE stages: analysis, design, and development. Interviews with 15 Class X students and one Arabic teacher revealed that 53.3% (n=8) identified qawāʿid (grammar) as the primary learning obstacle, followed by meaning comprehension (26.7%, n=4) and vocabulary (20%, n=3), reaffirming grammar complexity as a structural barrier for non-Semitic language learners. A technology-adoption paradox emerged: 53.3% had used Duolingo and 33.3% used translation apps, yet 46.7% (n=7) never used smartphones for Arabic study, while 40% ranked mobile learning as their preferred format. This reflects systemic inhibition caused by a lack of curriculum-aligned apps and limited teacher confidence in integrating smartphone-mediated learning. The prototype was developed using PowerPoint, iSpring Suite, and Web 2 APK Builder, embedding structured modules, transliteration, native-speaker audio, annotated visuals, animations, gamified quizzes, real-time feedback, adaptive learning paths, and autosave progress tracking. Expert validation indicated high feasibility (subject-matter: 92%; media: 91%). Field trials showed strong teacher acceptance (91%) and acceptable student feasibility (77%), yielding an overall feasibility score of 87.75%, confirming prototype readiness for broader implementation. The findings reinforce that curriculum alignment, multimodal scaffolding, and meaningful formative interactivity, rather than device availability alone, determine adoption, autonomy, and learner comprehensibility in secondary Arabic digital learning environments.
