Abstract

This present study reports on the findings related to the use of the snake and ladder game as a strategy to enhance the learners’ grammatical proficiency in mastering simple future tense. The participants were 27 eleventh graders of SMK Asrama Pembina Masyarakat. A number of instruments used in this study. The developments of the students’ grammatical proficiency were collected through the two sets of pre-test and post-test. The data related to the students’ attitude toward grammatical problems and the implementation of snake and ladder game were collected through questionnaires. Observation was employed to record the students’ participation during the lesson. The findings revealed that the students’ grammatical proficiency significantly improved. There were 20 (74.07%) out of 27 students who passed the criterion of minimum completeness of 75. The average score of students showed 77.26. Through the distributed questionnaires, the findings also demonstrated the positive thoughts and attitudes related to the game they played during the lesson.  The students’ participation to the use of the snake and ladder game in teaching-learning activity in the classroom was also pleasing. It can be concluded that the application of this game can meet the all criteria of success of cycle. In other words, it can play positive role in developing the learners’ grammatical proficiency.

Abstract

This study is primarily designed for investigating the tertiary students’ perspectives on the writing difficulties of essays. This study was conducted in explanatory research in which quantitative and qualitative data were obtained from the web-based questionnaire and semi-structured interview, then analyzed separately. 21 undergraduate students have enrolled in the survey and 6 of them were invited to the interview section. This research reveals tertiary students' problems in essay writing course are categorized into: affective problems which raise from students’ and lecturers’ attitude while teaching and learning Essay Writing Course, cognitive problems that considered as the difficulties in the areas of writing viewpoint, transferring language, and the process of writing, and linguistic problems in the area of lexico-grammar, vocabulary, and the structure of the essay. Due to the findings, those aspects of academic writing should be serious attention for both EFL students and teachers to overcome the problems. The findings of this study have implications for EFL writing course designers as basic data of material improvement and for researchers particularly in the realms of language and education.

Abstract

This research investigates the vocational school students’ needs on the implementation of English teaching and learning that is focused on the target needs and learning needs. By adapting Hutchinson and Waters’ model (1987), questionnaire consisting of parts A and B was administered to 32 students. Part A deals with the target needs centred on the learner’s necessities, lacks and wants that are effectively functioned in the target situation. In contrast, part B concerns about learning needs that encompass learning inputs, procedures, teacher’s and learners’ role, and setting. Additionally, interviews were also conducted with the students and an English teacher to gather data in order to examine in-depth results of the practices of English teaching and to uncover possible areas of students’ language difficulties in learning English. The results suggested that the students have different perceptions of their necessities, wants, and lacks. The findings also demonstrated the students’ learning needs including the learning inputs, teaching-learning procedures, the teacher’s and learners’ role, as well as the teachinglearning settings.

Abstract

An abundant of literatures on oral corrective feedback has been burgeoning in distintive focuse area in various countries around the world. however, the study that involve narrative analysis study in Indonesian university level in speaking program is tend to still infinited. This current study purposed to exploring teachers’ oral corrective feedback on EFL speaking performance at islamic private university in East Java, Indonesia. By adapting Gulnaz (2019) interview frameworks which consist of four target discussion included are teachers’ beliefs, practices, effectiveness perceptions, and types of oral corrective feedback (OCF) applied in the classroom speaking activites. This narrative qualitative methods (Connelly & Clandinin, 1990) employed semi-structured interviews as the intruments. A face-to-face interview consisting 4 items directed to 1 partisipants who lisenced to take part in this study. To analyze the qualitative data, thematic analysis proposed by widodo (2014) was applied sytematically. The findings indicated that there were a lot of teachers’ preferences to practiced OCF using several types of explicit correction so that it was effective for their students’ speaking skills for the future.

Abstract

In online learning, various problems that are often encountered are slow to understand the material, communication abilities, social abilities and weak internet networks. EfIT learning is carried out online which results in the emergence of many perceptions because online learning is very different from face-to-face learning. This study discusses students' perceptions of readiness for EfIT lessons in learning online during next normal. This qualitative interview study (Kvale, 2007) aimed at investigate Students’ Perceptions of Readiness Toward English for Islamic Teaching Course in Online Learning During next Normal. The data collected from-semi structure interview with four participants at one of the private university in the eastern of java, Indonesia. The result indicate that the readiness online learning in EfIT courses is quite good, especially in mastering technology.

Abstract

This current study is to examine both EFL instructor and students concerning the use of Duolingo for English speaking proficiency. To serve this purpose, an explanatory research design was employed. A set of questionnaire and semi-structured interview developed as the primary instruments for this current study. One EFL instructor and ten EFL students in one of the private Islamic Senior High School in Situbondo, Indonesia, involved as research participants in this study. In general, they perceived Duolingo in a positive ways. The findings resulted from semi-structured interview carried out with EFL instructor and the samples of the students revealed that Duolingo facilitated him/her in managing the classwork and assessment. However, some participants also reported several drawbacks. Conclusions, limitations, and recommendations were made for the further research.

Abstract

The corona virus (SARS-CoV-2) has become a global pandemic and has changed the structure of learning implementation by transforming the face-to-face learning mode to online learning, emergency remote teaching (ERT). This narrative study aims to explore the teaching experience of teachers at the secondary education level in a secondary school in Jember, Indonesia. This study involved five participants who voluntarily agreed to be involved in this study. They come from four different institutions (2 public and 1 private) in Jember Regency, Indonesia. To explore the data, the researcher used semi-structured interviews by utilizing the WhatsApp video call media. This study reveals that although the institution has provided various kinds of adequate ICT infrastructure, as well as teachers who are familiar with the operation of the LMS, the success rate of implementing online PJJ at the institution is still not optimal. This is evidenced by the many obstacles encountered. This study summarizes the various obstacles faced by students during online PJJ as a conclusion of this study. In addition, the implementation of hybrid learning is also recommended to minimize the above constraints.

Abstract

This study provides an analysis of a systematic review of the past studies published on methods of teaching reading in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. The analysis is based on 27 published article journals from 2014 to 2023 using e-data based: Scopus, Taylor & Francis, and Science Direct. This study is based on a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. The researchers would map the articles based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The data were analyzed using content analysis. The summary of the finding is (1) publication trends and network visualization shows detailed links for mapping the status of topics that have or have not been widely explored or discussed, (2) various methods in teaching reading for EFL classrooms and the effectiveness of using those methods to enhance students’ proficiency. The finding from this SLR served as a valuable resource for educators facilitating a deeper understanding of the methods of teaching reading, the result affecting students' reading skills, and its implication for enhancing the quality of education.

Abstract

Recent years, numerous studies across the world have examined EFL learners’ writing anxiety through their writing test. Yet, there is limited study on investigating learners’ anxiety in essay writing, particularly contextualized in Indonesia. Viewed from the lens of narrative study, this article explores the lived-experience of the university students’ essay writing anxiety situated in a private university in the eastern Java, Indonesia. Two students enrolled in “Critical Essay Writing” Course (KBI112) volunteered to be involved in the study. Grounded in the thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) as an analytic lens, findings indicate that the major factors significantly contribute to learners’ essay writing anxiety include: low level writing skill and confidence; learners’ self-efficacy; self-esteem; lack of grammatical knowledge; gender; instructor’s negative feedback; and writing motivation level. Empirical data also reveals that the students with higher writing anxiety level tend to produce low quality writing products and vice versa. This empirical evidence suggests that both teachers and students are highly required to intensify their efforts to create positive learning environment that can make the students to manage their feelings so that they can produce the better quality of essay writing products. This article also discusses pedagogical implications for classrooms and further research, limitations and recommendations. HIGHLIGHTS: Learners' writing anxiety was significantly affected by both internal and external factors. Learners with higher level of anxiety tend to produce lower writibg performamce. Managing learners' emotional feelings is a must-do action to reduce their writing anxiety.
