Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of integrating the communicative approach and cultural elements into the Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) program. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and a documentary study of the learning process. The results indicate a significant improvement in international learners’ speaking and listening competencies after cultural content was systematically integrated. The use of digital technology in delivering content was found to enhance learning motivation and facilitate the acquisition of contextual vocabulary. Additionally, understanding local sociolinguistic aspects helps students communicate more politely in accordance with Indonesian social norms. The primary challenge—grammatical barriers—can be addressed through adaptive and inclusive instructor guidance in the classroom. Overall, the synergy between linguistic, cultural, and technological aspects is the key to the success of Indonesian language internationalization. These findings recommend the development of more innovative teaching materials to strengthen the position of the BIPA program on the global stage as an effective tool for cultural diplomacy.

Abstract

Abstract

This research departs from the problem of low active participation of foreign learners in the interaction of Indonesian learning for Foreign Speakers (BIPA), especially those who are members of the Developing Countries Partnership (KNB) program. The verbal constraints they experience are not solely related to language skills, but also closely related to sociocultural, psychological, and pedagogical factors that affect their comfort in classroom interactions. This study aims to identify and describe the interaction obstacles faced by KNB foreign learners in BIPA learning and the factors that affect them as a whole. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques such as participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The research subjects consist of international students receiving KNB scholarships and participating in the BIPA program at one of the public universities in Indonesia. The data were analyzed thematically, emphasizing interaction patterns, verbal responses, and adaptation strategies used by learners in the learning context. The results show that the main obstacles in learning interactions come not only from the limitations of vocabulary and sentence structure, but also from the fear of making mistakes, lack of understanding of local communication norms, and lack of pedagogical support that is responsive to the learner's cultural background. These findings confirm the importance of developing BIPA learning strategies that are more inclusive, interactive, and based on intercultural awareness. This research provides theoretical and practical contributions to the development of BIPA teaching and opens up space for further studies in the realm of cross-cultural interaction in language education.

Abstract

Dangdut is one of Indonesia’s popular traditional music genres, rooted in Arabic, Malay, and Hindustani musical influences since the 1940s. Indonesia and South Korea share similarities in utilizing music for cultural promotion. Indonesia introduces its culture through dangdut music, while South Korea promotes its cultural identity through K-pop. K-pop is widely recognized among Indonesian youth, whereas dangdut remains relatively unknown in South Korea. Meanwhile, teaching Indonesian as a second language has developed significantly in South Korea, notably at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS). Introducing dangdut music in BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia for Foreign Speakers) instruction offers a strategic potential that can be compared to K-pop as an instructional medium. This study aims to (1) explore the characteristics of dangdut and K-Pop suitable as learning materials for BIPA in South Korea; and (2) describe the implementation of cultural diplomacy through dangdut music in the BIPA program. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a case study design. Primary data were obtained through observations, questionnaires, and interviews involving students, instructors, and program coordinators of BIPA at HUFS. Secondary data were collected from program documents and relevant literature. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive analysis model. The findings indicate that: (1) the communicative and contextual nature of dangdut is suitable for BIPA instructional materials, and K-Pop’s popularity is leveraged to attract learner interest; and (2) the use of dangdut music in BIPA instruction serves as a form of cultural diplomacy that strengthens intercultural relations. This study contributes to facilitating South Korean learners in acquiring the Indonesian language and ultimately enhancing the achievement of cultural diplomacy between the two countries.

Abstract

This article study aims to identify the usage frequency, analyse the usage context, compare usage patterns, and provide recommendations for teaching Indonesian as a Foreign Language (BIPA), with the focus on the terms pemelajar and pembelajar. Utilizing corpus analysis with AntConc, the term pemelajar is found to appear 697 times, whereas pembelajar appears 168 times across twenty distinct texts. The KWIC (Key Word in Context) analysis reveals that pemelajar frequently refers to BIPA students in instructional and descriptive contexts, with collocations such as diminta, dalam, and bipa. In contrast, pembelajar is used in more formal contexts related to the BIPA learning process, with collocations including bipa, bahasa, and dalam. N-Gram analysis indicates that the phrase "pemelajar bipa" is the most frequently occurring, suggesting a preference for its use in informal contexts. Based on these findings, it is recommended that BIPA instruction place greater emphasis on using the term pemelajar in instructional materials and curricula. Furthermore, it is advised that explanations of the contextual differences and usage of these terms be included in BIPA teacher training modules to enhance understanding and teaching effectiveness. This research offers practical guidance for BIPA educators in selecting appropriate terminology and strengthens Indonesian language instruction by providing a deeper understanding of the context and frequency of these key terms.
