Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Digital transformation has expanded access to information across generations while simultaneously creating significant literacy gaps. This study explores the meanings, strategies, causal factors, and expectations regarding information literacy in Indonesia's digital society. Using a qualitative exploratory design, data were collected from 25 purposively selected informants representing Generation Z, Millennials, Generation X, and Baby Boomers in Bone Regency through in-depth interviews and thematic analysis. The findings reveal that younger generations (Gen Z and Millennials) are generally more active and critical in seeking, verifying, and comparing digital information, whereas older generations (Gen X and Baby Boomers) rely more on traditional sources and close social networks. Motivational barriers, cognitive limitations, and socio-cultural influences emerged as the main drivers of this literacy gap. Despite these differences, all generations expressed aspirations for strengthening inclusive literacy through training, intergenerational collaboration, and community-based discussion forums. By integrating the ACRL Information Literacy Framework, Generational Theory, and the Socio-Technical Gap Model, this study provides a comprehensive theoretical lens to explain variations in literacy practices and challenges across generations. The results contribute to theory by contextualizing multigenerational digital literacy within semi-urban Indonesian society, and to practice by offering actionable recommendations for literacy training programs, intergenerational mentoring, and policy interventions that foster inclusive and sustainable information ecosystems. These insights underscore the urgency of adaptive, participatory, and culturally responsive strategies to bridge the gap and build societal resilience in the face of accelerating digital information flows

Abstract

This study presents a bibliometric review of the intersection between artificial intelligence (AI), information literacy, and user behavior in digital search ecosystems. The rapid growth of AI technologies, particularly in machine learning and deep learning, has significantly transformed digital search environments, affecting how users seek and process information. Despite the advancements, there is a growing concern over the widening digital literacy gap, particularly in countries undergoing digital transitions like Indonesia, where individuals with limited digital skills struggle to navigate AI-powered search systems. This review analyzes scholarly publications from 2014 to 2024, identifying publication trends, thematic focuses, and gaps in research related to AI-mediated information retrieval. The study reveals that while AI-driven technologies such as large language models and recommendation systems have reshaped search ecosystems, little attention has been given to understanding how users, especially those with low information literacy, interact with these systems. The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to improve digital and AI literacy, particularly in educational and public sectors. Future research should explore the social and cultural implications of AI in information access, focusing on diverse user groups and ethical considerations. This study contributes to both theoretical and practical knowledge by mapping the development of AI research and identifying areas requiring further exploration to ensure equitable access to information.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Indonesia are undergoing significant transformation as they face increasing demands to integrate traditional Islamic scholarship with modern educational competencies. This study examines curriculum dynamics at Ibadurrahman Islamic Boarding School in Stabat, Langkat Regency, with a particular focus on the integration of information literacy as a foundational competency for students in a digital era. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with key academic stakeholders-including the principal, deputy head of curriculum, and teaching staff-and supported by document analysis of syllabi, instructional materials, and institutional policy documents. The findings reveal that Ibadurrahman Pesantren adopts a dual-track curriculum combining national general-education standards with classical Islamic studies, enabling students to master both religious knowledge and modern scientific skills. Information literacy emerges not merely as a technical ability, but as an ethical and epistemic practice embedded in Islamic values, where students are trained to access, evaluate, and apply information responsibly across religious and academic contexts. This integration supports holistic development, fostering spiritual character, cognitive skills, digital competence, and academic readiness for higher education and professional paths. The study highlights the role of institutional leadership, pedagogical innovation, and continuous adaptation to national curriculum reforms in sustaining curriculum relevance. Overall, the results demonstrate that information literacy, when grounded in Islamic ethical principles, can serve as a strategic bridge between tradition and modernity, positioning pesantren as progressive learning institutions capable of developing morally grounded and information-literate Muslim youth equipped for contemporary global challenges.

Abstract

Information behavior refers to all activities related to human interaction with information. Generation Z (Gen Z), the generation born in the technological era, is no stranger to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in their daily lives. This study aims to analyze Gen Z's information behavior in this AI era from the perspective of Wilson's Information Behavior Theory (1996). The variables examined include passive attention, passive search, active search, and ongoing search information behaviors. Data analysis was conducted descriptively and inferentially using Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) with the help of SPSS 26.0 software The research instrument used an online questionnaire. The research respondents consisted of 260 Gen Zers spread across the island of Java. Respondents came from diverse demographic backgrounds, such as freelancers, students, and housewives. The results of the study show that demographic differences did not significantly affect AI usage patterns, as the majority of respondents (77.5%) chose AI personalization on social media as the most frequently used AI. Further findings show that the average values for information behavior are passive attention at 4.05, passive search at 3.91, active search at 4.04, and ongoing search at 3.97. This indicates that Gen Z in the AI era has a fairly balanced pattern of information behavior. They are not only passive in interacting with information that often comes by chance through social media algorithms, but also actively search for information when needed through search engines. Overall, this study shows that AI-based digital environment factors have a stronger influence than demographic factors in shaping Gen Z's information behavior. This also shows the relevance and expansion of the application of Wilson's Theory (1996) in the context of AI.
