Abstract

In todays dynamic and changing economic environment, businesses are subjected to greater risks than ever before. As a result of this, IT Project Leaders/Managers/Director/Senior Technical Staff should be in a position to identify the business risks that an organization faces and the risk management policies that an organization has to effectively manage those risks. These risks may be related with the Finance, Accounting, Information Systems and their security etc. Here, in this paper, we are emphasizing on Information Systems Security risks. Risk assessment is currently used as a key technique for managing Information Systems Security. Every organization is implementing the risk management methods. Risk assessment is a part of this superset, Risk Management. There are various information security risk assessment methods available that can be implemented by the organization, and each has different approaches to assess the information security risks. Organizations find it difficult to select an information security risk assessment method; therefore there is a need for a critical review of existing risk assessment methodologies. This paper presents a brief discussion on the top risk assessment methodologies, particularly COBRA, CORAS, CRAMM, OCTAVE, SOMAP, and NIST Guide, along with strengths and weaknesses of each one. After that a comparative study is also done on the basis of the review results. Further research directions may also be taken by the weaknesses section. This work provides an evaluation to determine whether an information security risk assessment method is in line with information technology governance or not. The research paper will help the Senior IT Personnel to provide their recommendations for using a risk assessment methodology based on the specific requirements of an organization.

Abstract

The mismatch between the generation and demand for electrical power is increasing at an alarming rate. This is mainly due shortage of conventional resources, use of appropriate technology for alternate energy sources and lack of awareness about energy conservation. Power supply to domestic, commercial and industrial consumers is a difficult task to the utilities controlled by the government. In rural India, irrigation pump sets are the major loads. The technical aptitude, attitude and co operation of the consumers helps a lot in energy management. The strategic power supply is affected if the consumers are not complying with the norms. A strategy is framed to provide power to domestic appliances around the clock and agricultural consumers on time division basis. But the local technicians play a corruptive role to violate this which is leading to overloading/failure of the distribution transformers frequently. Here, an attempt is made to devise a method to overcome the problem of agricultural consumers who are getting power on time division basis.  A control unit is installed at each distribution station to automatically monitor and control the power supply to domestic and agricultural consumers as per the pre defined schedule.  This paper explains the use of electronics and information technology in rural areas for better management of the power supply and consumption. The unauthorized connection leading to failure of distribution transformers is also taken care.

Abstract

This paper continues the advancement of models proposed for Information Retrieval by understanding that, the Information Retrieval task continues to draw attention as the information repositories increase. Knowing that Natural Language presentation of user’s information need help to reduce the complexity of the search process, we propose the use of a well defined Significant Indicator, which uses the relevance index of terms derived from the position of the text, to perform retrieval. This is achieved by initiating a text wrapping process such that document representation in space could algebraically be measured and assigned appropriate function as similarity ratio for Query and Document. Benchmark tools for Information Retrieval were followed and experiment performed using TREC classified data implemented with TRECEVAL shows better performance against some baseline models. Abstract

Standard FCM algorithm takes the pixel gray-scale information into account only, while ignoring the spatial location of pixels, so the standard FCM algorithm is sensitive to noise. This paper present a pavement image segmentation algorithm based on FCM algorithm using neighborhood information. The presented algorithm introduces neighborhood information into membership function to improve the standard FCM algorithm. It can eliminate noise effectively and retain the boundary information. The experiments by synthetic images and real pavement images show that the presented algorithm in this paper performs more robust to noise than the standard FCM algorithm and retain the boundary information effectively. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v10i7.1551

Abstract

The study was carried out to assess the undergraduate Business Education Students’ Perception on the use of Information and communication technology (ICT) in teaching and learning in the University. Thus, to achieve the purpose, two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. A sample of 100 students was randomly drawn using balloting and proportionate stratified random sampling techniques. A questionnaire of 4-point scale was used to collect data. It has face validity determined through expert judgement, and construct validity verified through factor analysis. The reliability of the instrument was obtained through Cronbach Alpha. A reliability coefficient of 0.82 was obtained as a measure of internal consistency. The data collected were analyzed with mean and Z-test. Mean was used to answer the research questions while Z-test was used to test the hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance. The result showed that there was high perception of students to use ICT in teaching and learning in the university. There was no significant difference between male and female students as well as 300 level and 400 level students on the use of ICT in teaching and learning. Therefore, it was recommended that ICT should be used in teaching and learning Business Education in the University.

Abstract

This study intends to explore the relationship between goal orientation, information literacy self-efficacy and lifelong learning outcomes of the adult learners. This study focuses on adult learners as they are actively participating in the development of the country socio-economy and recognized as the potential contributors towards the generation of knowledge-based economy. The findings of this study revealed that there was a significant relationship between mastery goal orientation and lifelong learning. However, information literacy self-efficacy was found to be a predictor instead of a moderator in the model. It is suggested that suitable and appropriate learning methods such as problem-based learning, case scenario presentations, portfolios and clinical debates can be designed specifically to facilitate adult learners’ mastery goal learning motivation in promoting lifelong learning. In addition, training and retraining to equip adult learners with new information literacy skills so as to keep up their self-efficacy level will definitely enhance lifelong learning. This study provides a database on the impact of goal orientation and information literacy self-efficacy towards lifelong learning in implementing policy formation, educational structure redesign and human capital development. As such, suitable and appropriate learning methods such as problem-based learning, case scenario presentations, portfolios and clinical debates can be designed specifically to facilitate student learning motivation in the classroom.

Abstract

Nowadays, the construction and application of digital library leads a new era of the way people obtain knowledge and information, and promotes the academic exchanges and social progress. Digital library, however, also involves great risk, hacker attacks become the main threat of the information security of digital library, and may probably cause the loss and damage of the information resources in library. Abstract

Information System Error Discovery took a lot of interests of information system experts. Indeed, this concept has been interpreted in more than one way. This paper describes the connections between 1) the Field-to-Scope Proportion and the Identifying and Managing way of Error Discovery and 2) the (Transmission, Influence and Implementing) TII model and Error Scope. The main goal of the work described here, is to seek deeper understanding of Error Discovery in general and, at last, to find easier ways of confirming it. Second, in this paper we try to model the TII evaluating using Work Expressing System which is Relational Graph. We also use this process model to present the relationship between Error Discovery, TII, (Field-To-Scope Proportion) FSP and Error Scope. After explaining the relationship between Semantic Error and Error Discovery, we improve the Relational Graph model by adding standard. We then offer instructions of the Relational Graph.

Abstract

Long Term Evolution (LTE) is the technology used in modern third and fourth generation mobile wireless cellular networks. Due to the presence of large number of users, mobility and varying channel conditions, proper resource allocation is essential to provide a good user experience and improve the system throughput. In this paper, a resource allocation algorithm is implemented that will use the probabilistic models to predict the channel condition and allocate resources accordingly. Also, the algorithm will support QoS requirements. During the resource allocation, the channel quality information is collected and analyzed to predict the future channel conditions and resource allocation vectors are configured accordingly. The performance of the algorithm is analyzed based upon the data collected. The algorithm is able to provide a reasonable success rate for channel prediction. By using the resource allocation vectors and channel prediction, the algorithm performance also is improved considerably due to the lesser space and time complexity required.
