Abstract

This article presents contextual arguments on the social problems addressed by the Catholic Church. The thought was developed in the 19th century with its industrialization that caused an enormous social as well as technological change, and that aimed a great social welfare. Unfortunately, industrialization was not identical with merely a social progress. Ideology such as liberalism or communism was conflictive and socially problematic. The victims have been the workers with their family amid the weakening of system of education, healthcare, morality and sense of faith. Involvement and intervention of the nation was supported by thinkers such as philosophers, experts in economy and politic as well as theologians and practitioners. Catholic Church with its option for the poor has based her vision on the fundamental commitment to human dignity, sacredness of life as well as the social nature of human being. Rerum Novarum, the encyclical letter of pope Leo XIII, presented a very significant insights concerning the world of workers, of policy makers, factory owners and people from human rights watch.

Abstract

Is theology in crisis of identity amid this modem world? In order to be able to answer such a question, we need to focus on and emphasize the role and contribution of Christian theology for the life of human being. Christian theology should be able to help people to understand basic human values in the light of correlation between God and human being. Such theology should be close to the people as well as contextual. For these purposes, theology needs to consider seriously its medium which are human languages and cultures. This modern and secularized age, unfortunately, also puts human languages and cultures in a crisis of meaning: a change from metaphysical and mystical expressions to a pragmatic and materialistic one. It does mean, positively, that Christian theology should be presented and communicated in a creative way and methodologically sound. This is a real challenge for a Christian theology in the modern world.

Hubungan antara paroki (orang kristiani setempat) dan biara serta sekolah menentukan wajah Gereja Katolik di lndonesia, dan selama lebih dari seratus tahun interaksi atau kerja sama antara ketiga lembaga dan gerak itu membuat Gereja Katolik bertumbuh di lndonesia. Apakah dalam siuasi krisis diperlukan paradigma baru, yang menjaring paroki dan terutama sekolah, agar warta yang dibawa Gereja tetap plausibel?Karangan ini melacak sejarah pertumbuhan paroki sampai pada titik kisis sekarang ini; dan demikian pula diikuti sejarah pertumbuhan lembaga pendidikan katolik sampai titik kritis. Apakah dibuka terobosan baru, kalau (tempat) sekolah Katolik menjadi jauh dari (tempat gedung) Gereja paroki? Apakah dalam model "Gereja diaspora" sekolah dan paroki dapat menemukan tempat tepat dan dapat berhubungan lebih nyata serta melayani manusia dan lnjil dengan lebih jujur?

Abstract

Visi Gereja bagi kaum miskin, lemah dan tersingkir dinyatakan secara istimewa oleh paus Fransiskus. Gereja diajak untuk instrospeksi sampai menyadari keberdosaannya dan sekaligus kembali pada akar iman dan harapannya, yaitu Yesus Kristus sebagai perwujudan belas kasih Allah bagi kita. Kenyataan ketimpangan sosial sekarang ini telah menjadi sumber penyakit sosial baru. Gereja di Asia terus ditantang untuk mewartakan Kabar Gembira Yesus Kristus melalui dialog kehidupan dan analisa sosial-budaya serta keagamaan yang berujung pada strategi serta tindakan pastoral demi kesejahteraan umum. Demikianlah cara menggereja dan beriman Kristiani selalu mengandaikan pengalaman pribadi dengan Yesus Kristus yang membawa kabar gembira dan berkat kehidupan.

Abstract

Yohanes Calvin (1509-1564) adalah figur penting di balik perkembangan Gereja Protestan. Salah satu dari sejumlah sumbangannya yang penting ialah terkait dengan gagasan dan pendekatannya terhadap Kitab Suci. Menurutnya, Alkitab sebagai Kitab Suci adalah Sabda Allah sendiri. Alkitab memang berwujud sebuah buku dengan tulisan yang berciri manusiawi, namun keberadaannya tidak dapat dilepaskan dari inspirasi Roh Kudus. Penafsiran atas Alkitab yang memuat Perjanjian Lama dan Perjanjian Baru dan keduanya ini memiliki kedudukan yang setara boleh dilakukan oleh siapa saja; tak ada satu pihak pun yang berhak meng-klaim sebagai penafsir tunggal. Calvin menekankan perlunya pendalaman atas teks dan konteks, sebagaimana itu dulu juga dikembangkan oleh para penulis Injil dan penulis surat-surat Perjanjian Baru dalam berhadapan dengan teks-teks Perjanjian Lama. Dengan ini, menurutnya, penafsiran Alkitab akan selalau bersifat majemuk dan tidak mandeg dalam acuan masa lalu saja.

Abstract

This research aims to seek inspiration and relevance of the thought of the Fathers of the Church to answer our current ecological problems. The method used is to focus on discovering the writings of Church Fathers that convey the universe in relation to God and human being. Then, some key ideas on ecology will be drawn. In conclusion, based on this research, the Fathers of the Church have a highly positive and appreciative point of view of the universe: all are well-created by God, and they are beautiful, harmonious, having intrinsic value and being a sign of Gods presence. The world is indeed a home for all creation, both human and non-human. Human beings have obligation to the universe that is to appreciate and maintain its beauty, goodness, and harmony, as well as to manage and cultivate the earth, to offer and sanctify its fruit to the Lord, and therefore to live in brotherhood with the whole creation. Humans are allowed to make use of non-human creations yet wisely: not only to satisfy worldly needs (uti), but also to achieve eternal happiness (frui). Consequently, human beings must live an ecological asceticism, by limiting the use of natural resources and aiming at improvement of the quality of life instead of on the standard of living.

Abstract

Does Christian ethics propose an original moral which is different from other ethics? The golden rule could be the starting point of the search for the uniqueness of the christian ethics. Treat others as you would like them to treat you. So treat others as a goal and not as a means. This golden rule still supposes a reciprocal relationship. So it must be viewed in a new perspective which is of generosity. So the categorical imperative must be completed by love your enemies and do good, and lend without any hope of return (Luke 6:35). This completion characterizes the logic of generosity which can be claimed is the uniqueness of christian ethics because it transcends the mere logic of eciprocity of the golden rule. The logic of generosity purifies the christian ethics rom all kinds of interests and expectations. This radicality of following Jesus hrist answers the perplexity of Derrida putting into question of the existence of a sincere gift and pardon. Derridas deconstruction confirms mediately the niqueness of christian ethics. Christianism places ethics in a concrete community with all its organizations, traditions, rites, institutions, theologies and the individuals of its members.
