Abstract

Peripartum depression is a psychological problem that can occur due to life stressors or what is usually called a stressful life event. The dynamics of the relationship between stressful life events and peripartum depression do not occur directly, but there is the role of trait rumination, which also influences the relationship between the two. This study examines the role of the rumination trait as a moderator between stressful life events and peripartum depression. 105 research participants were recruited by an accidental sampling technique. Data collection used the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Ruminative Responses Scale (RRS), and Stressful Life Event Questionnaire (SLEQ). The results of this study indicate the rumination trait can be a moderator of the role of SLE on DP, where the brooding subtype strengthens while the reflection subtype buffers. The practical implication of this research is that trait reflection as a form of adaptive trait can be formed by accustoming individuals to focusing on solving stressors rather than thinking about stressors continuously, which increasingly makes them trapped in negative affect. Abstract

Donating blood is a very useful activity, and the reasons for donating blood are also varied, such as wanting to help others by donating their blood, having experience of family members needing blood but running out, and finding it difficult to find blood donors willing to donate blood, and social rewards. Based on this, the study aims to determine the effect of self-compassion and self-monitoring on altruistic behavior in early adulthood blood donors in Surabaya. The method used is quantitative correlation. Data collection used the altruism scale, self-compassion scale, and self-monitoring scale for 347 blood donors. Data analysis using multiple linear regression. The results of this study indicate that there is an influence between self-compassion and self-monitoring on altruism behavior in early adulthood blood donors. This research suggests that having high levels of self-compassion and self-monitoring is a prerequisite for engaging in altruistic behavior, such as giving blood to patients in need. Abstract

The presence of a father in childcare is as important as a mother. This study aims to explore how fathers describe their emotional experiences of parenting. The research participants were fathers who have children under the age of five (1-3 years old). The data collection method used a semi-structured interview technique conducted online with reference to the Parent Development Interview-Revised (PDI-R). A phenomenological approach and iterative coding techniques were used to analyze the data and determine themes. The results identified six main emotions: joy, pain/difficulty, happiness, pride, annoyance/anger, and guilt based on four father’s experiences in parenting: father-child relationship, child-focused experience, father-focused experience, and father role fulfillment experience. The implication of this study is that people can know and realize that fathers feel a variety of positive and negative emotions in their relationship with children, so that they can comprehensively explore the role of fatherhood.

Abstract

Marital conflict is the primary reason for marital divorce in Indonesia. A constructive conflict resolution style is required to maintain marital stability and quality. The present research examined the relationship between components of emotional intelligence (self-awareness, managing emotions, motivating oneself, empathy, and social skills) and conflict resolution styles among Christian married couples. The study included 205 respondents from Christian communities across a range of denominations. The results show that all components of emotional intelligence correlated positively with positive problem-solving styles and were inversely related to the conflict engagement style. The conflict withdrawal style was not associated with the managing emotions component but was inversely related to other components of emotional intelligence. The compliance style correlated negatively with the self-awareness component but not with the rest of the components of emotional intelligence. Research discussion focuses on the benefits of emotional intelligence in conflict resolution among married couples. Abstract

Cases of sexual violence against children are increasingly prevalent in Indonesia and involve underage individuals as perpetrators. Criminal profiling can be carried out to find out the background and factors that influence these actions. This research uses qualitative research methods, through a narrative approach, and uses data analysis according to Miles and Huberman's theory. Data validity using the degrees of trust (credibility) test method. The respondents in this study were three adolescent perpetrators of sexual violence against children and were assessed using observation, interviews, document studies, and 6 types of psychological tests. The results of this study show that the three respondents have a psychological profile, namely having a less harmonious relationship with the family, experiencing academic problems, already knowing the victim from before the incident, the scene of the incident being in a quiet location, having a motive to fulfill sexual urges, and making persuasion and threats to the victim. Parents and other adults in the adolescent environment should prioritize the psychological well-being of adolescents to prevent the emergence of sexual violence in adolescents, given that there are both internal and external factors that encourage violent behavior in adolescents. Keywords: criminal profiling, correctional child, sexual violence

Abstract

Various phenomena of environmental degradation require people to act immediately to implement more sustainable behaviors and lifestyles. This study aims to investigate the role of value orientation in sustainable behavior among the Environmental Engineering students of Lambung Mangkurat University. The study method was quantitative, with a total sample of 125 Environmental Engineering students in at least the second year (batch of 2021, 2020, 2019). The subjects were selected using the simple random sampling technique. The measurement instruments included the adapted Sustainable Behavior Scale and the Environmental Portrait Value Questionnaire (EPVQ) scale. The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results of the hypothesis testing show that among the four dimensions of value orientation, only the biospheric dimension played a significant role in sustainable behavior. In contrast, the altruistic, hedonic, and egoistic dimensions did not play a role in sustainable behavior. However, all the value dimensions simultaneously played a role in sustainable behavior. The coefficient of determination shows that the value orientation had a role in sustainable behavior.   Keywords: Sustainable behavior, value orientation, environmental engineering students

Abstract

This introduction provides an overview of the contributions included in this MediaPsi edition. There are six articles in Mediapsi 10(1) 2024. One article is in English and the other five are in Indonesian. The six articles in Mediapsi 10(1) 2024 depict a range of life phenomena in people, from young children to adults. People undergo a range of experiences that result in a range of reactions, including both maladaptive and adaptive behavior. In three articles, research findings are presented against the backdrop of adaptive behavioral phenomena, such as the selfless actions of blood donors, teenagers' subjective well-being, and students' sustainable behavior. In contrast, three other articles review research findings beginning with maladaptive phenomena, such as postpartum depression, child sexual abuse, and divorce that may arise from different conflict resolution approaches. The diversity of articles featured in Mediapsi's first issue of 2024 is expected to stimulate theoretical and practical contributions to upcoming studies.
