Abstract

Homelessness and beggary are social problems, particularly for urban community. The Indonesian government has long used rehab centers to train vagrants and beggars to be fully functioning members of society. Future-mindedness is one of the life-attitudes that the homeless and beggars are to learn to adopt. Using the case study approach, this qualitative psychological research explores future-mindedness among vagrants and beggars undergoing rehab programs. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with four participants and two of their significant others. The thematic analysis conducted on the interview data produced three key findings: a) the circumstances that had helped bring about beggary and vagrancy; b) the ways the beggars and vagrants learned to plan their lives; and c) the factors that enabled them to think about the future. This study concludes that employment, place of residence, and family life formed the center of these people’s future plans. Rehab programs—if they are to succeed—must take into account both the personal context and the social environment in which beggars and vagrants have lived their lives and are learning to re-think their futures.

Abstract

A relationship (dating) that is established on the basis of affection between lovers, which involves various emotional feelings can in fact also have negative impacts such as abusive tendencies towards one another. Various forms of abuse (verbal, physical, sexual, and economic) received by the victim as well as the presence of various factors (comfort, length of relationship, fulfillment of affection needs, et cetera) can cause victims to persist in abusive relationships. This study aims to identify and understand the process of the occurrence of abusive relationships, using the research method of observational interviews or structured interviews and using qualitative analysis. The results showed that the four participants had experienced verbal abuse and two of them also experienced physical abuse. The conclusion of this study is that the four participants experienced the same abusive relationship process (5 stages), starting with the initial enjoyment stage until the end of the relationship. The implication of this research is that society can identify and be aware of the abusive relationship process in order to minimize the further impact of violence.

Abstract

This research was conducted to explore the source of anxiety and coping strategy of youth during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. A qualitative survey was conducted online with 365 young people aged 15-23 year. Six themes arise in this study that show sources of anxiety of young people, namely: a) fear of being infected with the COVID-19, b) uncertainty about the future, c) social relation problems, d) academic-related anxiety, e) family economic problems, f) exposure to information on cases of COVID-19 infection. We also found eight coping strategies to deal with anxiety, namely religious coping, active coping, making meaning, seeking emotional support, optimism, avoidance, emotional regulation, and exercises. The findings implied that young people develop religiosity and in combination with other coping strategies to endure the unprecedented outbreak of COVID-19. This finding implies that psychological interventions should address religious coping to help young people to cope with various sources of anxiety during stressful life events such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

The pandemic situation required the majority of universities to carry out online learning, including Universitas Padjadjaran. The pandemic situation tends to decrease students' probability to interact while doing academic activities. This study was conducted to prove whether loneliness can also predict the emergence of suicide ideation during pandemic Covid-19 using the R-UCLA Loneliness Scale and the Suicide Ideation Scale. The research sample was 171 active students from Universitas Padjadjaran, with 49 male participants and 122 female participants. 20.47% of participants had severe loneliness and 19.3% of participants had high level of suicide ideation. Simple regression test showed that loneliness can be used to predict 27.8% the occurrence of suicidal ideation in male participants and 30% in female participants. Further research can be done by balancing the number of male participants.

Abstract

The increasing number of depressed people in Indonesia has not been matched by the available professionals and services. The development of online technology has encouraged researchers to develop online-based psychological intervention approaches for people to utilize independently (self-help). However, research remains inconsistent regarding the effectiveness of this approach. This study sought to examine the effectiveness of online self-help in reducing depression using a meta-analysis approach. Specifically, we systematically collected and analyzed 16 scientific publications. Findings show that the effectiveness of online self-help interventions in reducing depression is low. This may be due to the influence of several issues, such as the circumstances of the participants and the implementation of the intervention. The results of this study can be taken into consideration for practitioners or for individuals who would like to implement self-help interventions.

Abstract

The lack of fulfillment of teachers' rights has resulted in teachers feeling less prosperous and less satisfied with their current careers. In order to feel career satisfaction, teachers need a measure of subjective career success. Achieving subjective career success requires career optimism so that teachers can view their future career positively, focus on developing their potential, and plan their career path. The objective of this study is to determine the relationship between career optimism and the eight dimensions of subjective career success among teachers. The study used quantitative methods and quota sampling techniques with a total of 300 participants. The result of the study showed that career optimism is significantly related with the five dimensions of subjective career success, (i.e., authenticity, growth and development, influence, personal life, and satisfaction). Moreover, career optimism is not significantly related with the three other dimensions of subjective career success (i.e. meaningful work, quality of work, and recognition).
