Abstract

In the world we live in today, technology has greatly simplified human life but at the same time significantly reduced physical activities. In this research, we examined the extent to which physical activity among 479 Instagram’s users (Mage = 21.24, SDage = 1.31) could be predicted by fear of missing out (FoMO), a pervasive apprehension to stay connected virtually with others while accounting for the unique contribution of individual differences in controlling mental processes and behaviour (trait self-control). As predicted, participants with higher levels of FoMO more than those with lower levels of FoMo reported less adherence in carrying out physical activity. However, the role of FoMO on physical activity became insignificant once trait self-control was taken into account. Individuals with high self-control traits were able to display adequate physical activity, irrespective of their low or high levels of FoMO.  This finding implies that the benefit of having good self-control in physical activity surpasses the detrimental role of FoMO. Given the importance of social media in shaping their life especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, social media users need to be more selective in maintaining virtual friendships and balancing it with self-control exercises.

Abstract

Mediapsi volume 7, number 2, December 2021 has published seven empirical articles. Each of the articles investigated multifarious topics. The first article is experimentation, which revealed that the career decision-making course (CDMC) was effective in reducing students’ career decision making difficulties. The experiment in the second article demonstrated that self-disclosure training significantly increased the self-acceptance of adolescent students with cerebral palsy. The third article is qualitative research using a systematic review to identify and analyse various definitions and types of a case study. The fourth article examined fear of missing out (FoMO) and found that this variable, controlling for trait self-control, was suboptimal in explaining physical activity among Instagram users. The topic in the fifth article has to do with adolescents’ emotional and behavioural problems. The findings in this article showed that male and female adolescents reported the same emotional and behavioural problems. The sixth article is a quantitative correlational study, which reported that among private school teachers, the lower the tenure, the more negative the relationship between job satisfaction and intentions to leave the organization or workplace. The seventh article is a correlational quantitative study that found how political trust, political efficacy, and candidate orientation played a significant role either simultaneously or partially in explaining political participation.

Abstract

Individuals with positive self-esteem recognize their personal qualities. They feel comfortable, optimistic, and confident about themselves. Conversely, individuals with negative self-esteem tend to experience poor quality of life. This study examines the effectiveness of logotherapy in increasing self-esteem. We conducted a meta-analysis by collecting and reviewing 14 research articles on logotherapy and self-esteem. We analyzed the data from the selected articles based on the number of participants (N), the average value (M), and the standard deviation (SD). The meta-analysis showed that logotherapy is a recommended and effective intervention to increase self-esteem.   Keywords: logotherapy, meta-analysis, self-esteem

Abstract

Teenagers are vulnerable to experiencing an identity crisis. This crisis encourages some adolescents to externalize their problems by engaging in deviant behaviors. One factor that drives externalizing problems in adolescents is their perception of their father’s involvement. This study aims to determine the role of adolescents’ perception of their father’s involvement in their externalizing problems. The participants in this study were 498 Muhammadiyah Middle School students in several cities in East Java who were selected based on a simple random sampling technique. Adolescents’ perception of their father’s involvement inversely predicted their externalizing problems. Adolescents with a higher perception of their father’s involvement tended to have lower externalizing problems. Keywords: adolescents, father’s involvement, externalizing problem

Abstract

Building positive teaching is paramount to increasing learning effectiveness, especially for new students. Students face many problems transitioning from high school to the university (e.g., boredom, low motivation, adaptation process, etc.). Self-Development Courses using project-based learning and positive teaching can become the answer to these challenges. This research aims to develop a Self-Development course module based on the positive teaching paradigm. We employed the research and development approach by defining, designing, and developing the course module. We planned the course activities based on the semester’s learning plan (e.g., self-introduction activities and teaching contracts, “who am I,” strengths and weaknesses, teamwork, etc.). We tested the validity of the module using Aiken’s V. Aiken V results ranged from 0.58 to 0.83, meaning that each activity in the proposed module was valid. Abstract

The executive function determines whether individuals can perform goal-oriented behaviors. The critical developmental processes of executive function occur during the preschool years. The Covid-19 pandemic increases stress among children and their caregivers. Which consequently hamper the children’s executive function development. The present study examines the development of executive function among preschoolers (2 to 5 years, N = 92) during the Covid-19 pandemic. The results showed that about 12 percent of the sample had developmental problems in their executive function, particularly regarding their emergent metacognition. Children with this developmental problem would find difficulties in initiating, planning, and solving problems independently.
