Abstract

Language is an important means of communication to express our idea, emotion and feeling. Literature is creative and imaginative work of art spoken and written. Lyrics and poems, which are examples of literature, can express our feeling. Song is an imaginative awareness of experiences expressed through meaning, sound and rhythmic language choice so as to evoke an emotional response.There are many western musicians who use figure of speech in the songs. The researchers interested in Adele songs. Because her songs contain figure of speech and the researcher believes that these figure not yet well understood by the listeners. Her songs always contain about her experience.From this research, it is found in the songs that the kinds of figure of speech are personification, Metaphor and Synecdoche. The meaning in the figure of speech that is different from one song to another. Finally the researcher suggest the readers or other research want to conduct some researches that can analyze other types and aspect of figure of speech in the lyrics of songs composed or created by other singers.

Abstract

The analysis provides the study about figurative language, possible meaning and the total meaning in three songs of Paramore, “Born for This”, “That’s What You Get” and “The Only Exception”. This study tries to analyze figurative language, possible meaning and the total meaning in statement of the problem. This analysis aims to analyze the types of figurative language and possible meaning and to tell the total meaning of the Paramore songs. This analysis follows the design of qualitative method because it is related to the object of research. Qualitative description is defines as research designed to produce a low inference description of a phenomenon that draws from discourse.The result of the research of the first song is “Born for This”. This song has figurative language are ambiguity, personification, and etc. “That’s What You Get”song has ambiguity, personification, and etc. “The Only Exception” has personification, metaphor and etc. From this research the researcher concludes, in this songs have many figurative languages to make meaningful.

Abstract

The result of this study show that the English teacher used techniques SQ3R (survey or skimming, questioning, read, recall and review) and scanning in teaching. The implementation into students ability, the teacher used three-phase stages in reading they are: pre reading activity, whilst reading activity, and post reading activity. whereas  the strength and weaknesses of the techniques, the teacher used the same techniques in teaching reading to make easier for students. It is to make student more attracted because the teacher always give them motivation in guidance and the teacher also help the students to increase their ability in pronunciation. Moreover, the researcher found in weaknesses of this technique sometimes the students felt bored because they got the same techniques used by the teacher. Therefore, it is suggested the teacher  use these techniques in teaching reading comprehension, Finally the researcher suggested that the teacher should always give the motivation and the teacher combines the techniques so that the students can easily understand the lesson that the teacher teaches, it means that the teacher has made the students perform better in their learning activity.

Abstract

This research is conducted to find out the creative techniques, the implementation, and the advantages of the implementation of the creative techniques in teaching vocabulary at Sabilussalam kindergarten where pupils level B and 1 teacher are as subject. While, the objects of the research is all information related to the creative techniques in teaching vocabulary at Sabilussalam kindergarten.This research usesdescriptive qualitative method and the data collection techniques are classroom observations, documentation and interview. For analyzing the data, the researcher uses interactive model which is adapted from Miles and Hubberman (19984:6). The finding showedthat there are four creative techniques in teaching vocabulary at Sabilussalam kindergarten. Those were, Sing song, Drilling, Role play, and Game techniques. Besides, the researcher found theteaching techniques were implemented creatively in different ways. Firstly, the drilling technique was implemented by using gestures, and hip hop style.  Secondly, the singing song technique was implemented by using gestures, repetitions, hip-hop and sound of clap the table. Thirdly, the role play was implemented by usingthe performing robot’s actions, super hero and play Dora’s adventure. Finally, the Game technique was implemented by using whispers, gestures, robot’s movements and guess. Additionally, all of implementations of the creative techniques in teaching vocabulary at Sabilussalam have some advantages. They are to develop children’s knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes. The techniques can develop their knowledge because it can help them to improve their vocabulary in meaning and understanding. Besides, they can develop their skill because these techniques not only help them to improve their vocabulary but also explored in their skill especially the listening and the speaking skill which werethe basic skill had been mastered for young learner. Additionally, the techniques can develop children’s understanding and attitude because they were not only know and memorized vocabulary which had been taught but also they can understand the meaning word and explored their idea, expression in their daily activity.

Abstract

The result of this research may give more understanding of the use of flouting maxims on the script of Stand up comedy. The speech act in the script of stand up comedy Raditya Dika part 1 on July 2012 tend to flout the maxim for some reasons and explain the kinds of maxims that are flouted in the script of stand up comedy and explain how the maxims are flouted to create humor. This study applies Grice’s theory     This research is qualitative research. To collect the data the writer selected the utterances of raditya Dika which contain Flouting Maxims  then classified the data based on the types of flouting maxims. The result of this study  conclude that there are several types of flouting maxims, such as the flouting maxims of manner which are found in the script of stand up comedy by Raditya Dika, beside that there are several reasons that make Raditya Dika used flouting maxims

Abstract

This research observed  the dialogue between the characters in The Karate Kid Movie which consists of characters from America (West) and China (East). It has purpose to find out the kinds of politeness strategies which are used by the main characters, and describe how and why they are used by the main characters. This research is qualitative research. The data are in the form of utterances. There are many politeness strategies which are used  by the main characters. In the bald on record strategy, there are three utterances found. Then, there are twelve utterances that include positive politeness strategy, while there is one utterance that includes negative politeness strategy, and there is one utterance contains off record strategy. It can be concluded that the main characters often use positive politeness strategies in their conversation. The result of this study can be concluded that the politeness strategies are important to be used in life. It means that it can be used to avoid and minimize the Face Threatening Acts which a speaker makes. Besides, it can be used to avoid misunderstanding in the conversation of daily life.

Abstract

This article entitled Analysis of figurative language in Song “Vanilla Twilight”, “The Saltwater Room”, and “Lonely Lullaby” by Owl City. Object analysis is Owl City songs. Problems in this research is finding a figure of speech and meaning that may be contained in the lyrics Owl City. This study aims to find the figure of speech in the Owl City song and what the meaning of the song. This study uses qualitative methods. The qualitative approach is one in which the Inquirer Often makes knowledge claims based primary social constructs a history. Data collection techniques used observational data. Data analysis techniques the phase when the researcher precedes the data after the data are collected.The figurative languageare found in the lyrics of songs like personification, similes, symbols, alliteration, hyperbole, repetition, and allegory, figures of speech and alliteration rarely. Then, total meaning are found in the lyric.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the kinds of strategies and the application of the strategies which are used by the fifth grade students at SDN Kebraon II Surabaya in improving vocabulary. In this research, a qualitative descriptive design is used to describe the objective of the research. The techniques of data collection were used in this research were observation and questionnaire. The data analysis used in this research was the interactive model analysis from Miles and Huberman that consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion. In the results of this research, it is found that there are twenty one kinds of strategies which are used by the fifth grade students in improving vocabulary. The strategies that were employed by the students mostly were influenced by the teacher’s teaching techniques. The orders of the teacher seemingly become a habit for the student to be conducted automatically in the process of language learning.

Abstract

English is very important to be learned by the people, because English as an international language widely used by society. This research describes the implementation and the student’s response after the teacher teaching reading novel for eleventh grade students at SMA GEMA 45 Surabaya. In this research, the researcher observed when the teacher teaching reading “Silas Marner” novel using cooperative learning techniques. This research aims to describe the implementation and the student’s responses after the teacher teaching reading for eleventh grade students at SMA GEMA 45 Surabaya. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. To collect the data, the researcher used three kinds of instruments they are: interview, observation and questionnaire. The teacher used jigsaw and number heads together to teach reading “Silas Marner” novel in each meeting. The results show that after the teacher teaching reading, the students have achievement in two aspects; speaking aspect and writing aspect. Besides that, through teaching reading novel using jigsaw and number heads together can help the students easy to comprehend “Silas Marner” novel and it can avoid student’s bore. Furthermore, the teacher should apply appropriate technique for the students who need to increase critical thinking when the students studying at class.

Abstract

This study is to find out the implementation of Hip Hop song in teaching vocabulary to students and the advantages of using Hip Hop Song technique to teaching vocabulary.The researcher used qualitative descriptive design. The subjects of this study are both students and teacher at Creative 16 Elementary School Surabaya.The techniques to collect the data were observation and interview. To analyze the data, the adapted interactive model by Miles and Huberman was used.The findingsof  the implementation of Hip Hop song in teaching vocabulary are as follows: Opening, Main teaching, and Closing; the advantages of using Hip Hop Song technique are Music motivates the students in the teaching learning process, Listeningto the song improves comprehension skills, Singing songs develops good pronunciation, Singing songs increases vocabulary and speech patterns, Music aids memory, Music brings culture alive, Music acts like a stress buster, Music saves time.
