Abstract

The purpose of this research is to reveal whether Moana’s Screenplay by Jared Bush can be considered as an eco-feminism reading or not. To prove this hypothesis, the researcher analyzes Moana’s Screenplay through find out the characteristics of the main character that reflect ecological feminism and reveals the relationship between man, woman, and nature in Moana’s screenplay using eco-feminism perspective. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative methods in analyzing the data. The researcher found that eco-feminism issues were clearly shown in this screenplay. First, the main character in Moana’s Screenplay was not described as a weak woman but she showed the characteristics of leadership, ambitious, and courageous where these characters usually owned by man. She was described as a woman who loved their people and the environment which is a reflection of ecological feminism. Second, the relationship between man and woman was illustrated that male characters dominated woman both verbally and mentally. Third, regarding the relationship between man and nature, it was found that nature was dominated because man saw nature as a resource to meet human needs. Finally, related to the relationship between woman and nature, it was revealed that woman was closer to nature than man so they can live in harmony.

Abstract

 In learning English as Foreign Language, there are many background factors that play important roles to be success in learning. In the case of foreign students who study English in non-English speaking country, these factors become more complex. This study aims to analyze the background factors of Thai students’ speaking achievement and the different background factors between student’s high and low scores of speaking achievement. This study used mixed method design as method of study. The theories of factors were used to answer the objective of this research such as self-esteem, inhibition, risk-taking, anxiety, empathy, extroversion, introversion, motivation, attitude, language exposure, and social situation. The subject was five students from Thailand who studied at Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya. The finding was that each of students mostly possessed different background factors. However, their intensity and ability were different among of them. All of those factors were greatly influence their acquiring of TEFL as well. There were two students who had the highest and lowest scores in their speaking achievement after several years they have learned English in Indonesia. The different background factors between both of them were self-esteem, inhibition, risk-taking, anxiety, extroversion, introversion, attitude, and social situation factors. Their background factors in speaking were supported by many factors to reach a good achievement. Therefore, the factors mainly play important roles to tend students learning foreign language successfully.

Abstract

This research is about an analysis of suggestive words that is used in Derren Brown and Romy Rafael’s hypnosis. This study answers the problems related to the use of suggestive words in hypnosis. These problems are about the type of suggestive words used in hypnosis, the steps to use the suggestive words, the intended meaning of the suggestive words and the reason to use the suggestive words. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. Derren Brown and Romy Rafael used the suggestive words in the form of suggestion to imagine and suggestion to obey. The illocutionary acts proposed by Daniel Vanderveken is used as the main approach in determining the illocutionary acts, beside that Searle’s approach of Speech acts is applied as the supporting theory. The result of the analysis is the suggestive words used by Derren Brown and Romy Rafael were in the form series of words. The series of words presented by Derren Brown and Romy Rafael as a hypnotist can be viewed from different angles depending on the mode of delivery used to change the context. By giving suggestion through a series of words, Derren Brown and Romy Rafael can make people do things that they consider unreasonable as driven by the subconscious mind.

Abstract

This research aims to find out flouting of cooperative principles maxim which are employed by the characters and to find out the speaker’s meaning in Little Women novel by Louisa May Alcott.There are two objectives of the research that must be answered; (1) to describe the flouting of cooperative principles in Little Women by Louisa May Alcott; (2) to find of the possible reason for flouting the maxims in the Little Women novel by Louisa May Alcott. Descriptive qualitative is applied as the method of the research. Discourse Analysis proposed by H.P Grice is used as the main approach and Flouting Cooperative Principles Levinson is applied as the supporting theory. The results of the analysis it can be concluded that the fact of flouting of maxim is the important point in linguistics and pragmatics. English learner should improve themselves by understanding flouting of maxims. We can find the flouting maxim of relation in script movie or the other object like short story, script drama and novel.

Abstract

The result of this study show that the English teacher synchronized the steps of scientific approach in Curriculum 2013 with the applications of Discovery Learning in his lesson plan. The steps are observing through stimulation, questioning through problem statement, experimenting through collecting data, associating through processing data, communicating through verification and generalization. They make them, the students become more active in oral activities and all of activities can make the students do not feel bored. This study also attempts to know about the student’s responses after the implementation of Discovery Learning. It can be concluded that the students more understand easily toward the materials which were taught, especially in their speaking skill because Discovery Learning has given positive impact for the students. Finally the researcher suggested that the teachers should always give the motivation and provide the other materials using the creative techniques so that the learning process can more effective and meaningful. It means that the students will never forget their experiences and the teacher’s explanations within a long period.

Abstract

This study took She’s The Man film as the study object because it shows how did one of the unfair condition happen. Aims of this study are to find out characterizations of Viola Hastings in She’s The Man film and to analyze how is Viola Hastings’ characterizations reflected feminism. Some theories that was applied in this study were characterization and feminism theories. To reach the aims, the writer used descriptive qualitative as the method. For the primary data the writer took script of She’s The Man film directed by Andy Fickman. The result of this study are the descriptions of physical appearance of the main character, personality of the main character  and social relationship of the main character. Then, the writer analyzed how her characterizations reflected feminism. Charaterizations of Viola were hated sexist and tomboy because tomboy indicated Viola was a girl who strong and brave. It is different from the most people thought about girls whom weak and spoiled. She hated sexist so much, it means she did not like if there is people underestimate girls. Viola proved that gender did not influence anything and she could win her game, beating Cornwall boys team because of her hard training.

Abstract

This article entitled An Analysis Of Pivot Grammar Used By Pupils In Playgroup Attaqwa Surabaya. Language is the most important mean of communication in every human being. Language is obtained since human were in mother’s womb. Therefore, the researcher analyzes the pupils production of the utterance at the age of two to three years old in at-taqwa playgroup, meaning and description about pupils utterances. The design of researcher is descriptive qualitative research. It contains the description of pupil’s utterance in at-taqwa playgroup. The result of the study shows that in many activities of observation most pupils in at-taqwa playgroup use two utterances that are referred as pivot grammar.

Abstract

As far as the researcher’s knowledge, the analysis of “The Effectiveness of Comic Strips in increasing student’s speaking ability” is still difficult to find, the researcher formulates the statement of the research that is comic strips give the significant effect in increasing student’s speaking ability. The objective of research is to find out whether comic strips method can give the significant effect in increasing students’ speaking ability or not. This research uses experimental design, the subject are VIIIth A as experimental group and VIIIth B as controlled group at MTs. Hidayatus Salam, Lowayu. The data collection uses test (pre-test and post-test) as instrument to measure the result of students. After giving the test, the researcher counts the data (percentage of the results which have the significant score) and analyses based on Criteria scoring by oral proficiency scoring categories by Brown. After giving the test of both classes, both of them have an increasing speaking ability. Based on the percentage of both classes, in post-test shows that with comic strips the experimental class has more significant effect than control class, the mean score of experimental class is 74.7 and 58.03 for control class. The experimental class has significant effect especially in the term of fluency, vocabulary, comprehensibility and performance.

Abstract

This thesis entitled Nina’s Characterization Reflected in the Speech Acts in Black Swan Film. Question of the research are what kinds of speech acts which show Nina’s double characters in the film “Black Swan”, what are the intended meanings of those speech acts and why does Nina use those speech acts in film “Black Swan”. This study is aimed to find the kinds of speech acts which show Nina’s double characters in the film “Black Swan”, to analyze the intended meanings of those speech acts, and the last to explain why Nina uses those speech acts in film “Black Swan”. This study makes reference to Yule, Searle and Taleb theory. This research is qualitative research. The data of the research are the utterances of Nina which have been obtained from the film script. From the data analysis, it is found that 15 utterances which have intended meaning spread by 5 macro classes of speech act : 6 utterances of representative, 5 utterances of Expressive, 2 utterances of directive, 1 utterance of commissive, and 1 utterance of declarative. Beside that, the reason of the use of speech act is because she is getting OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) which can create delusion in herself and destroy her life

Abstract

This research analyzes code switching and code mixing which exist in the conversation of novel Perahu Kertas. The aims of this research are describe the types of code switching and code mixing used in the conversation in novel Perahu Kertas, the components in speaking of code switching and code mixing in the conversation in novel Perahu Kertas, and the reasons of using code switching and code mixing. This research uses a descriptive qualitative with the conversation utterances in novel Perahu Kertas as the sample. The data collection technique in this research is documentation techniques. The data collection are taken from the conversation in novel Perahu Kertas that use code switching and code mixing. The source of the data of this research is utterances from conversations in the novel Perahu Kertas. Based on the analysis, the result can be concluded that the code switching and code mixing phenomena in novel Perahu Kertas are situational, metaphorical code switching, and inner, outer code mixing. The component of speaking is from SPEAKING acronym. The reasons of code switching and code mixing in novel Perahu Kertas are arrival of a new person, different status and formality, particular topics, affective message, and expressing disapproval.
