This journal is committed to investigate and scrutinize present issues of ELT, linguistics and literature. Abstract

Christian Grey and Anastasia Steel are the main character in trilogy of Fifty Shade by E.L James. This novel is one of the best popular literatures in 21st century. This study focuses on analyzing both main characters by using ideal romance by Janice roadway which is portrayed in first trilogy of Fifty Shades. There are some terms in ideal romance; two of them are the ideal of hero and the ideal of heroin. This study focuses to look deeper into character of Christian grey as the hero and Anastasia steel as the heroin.  This study also discusses about their sexual behavior and relation as part of romance popular literature today. This study is using textual analysis approach and genre analysis theory to analyze the problem. Whether Christian Grey and Anastasia Steel has all the ideal categories of hero and heroine which is based on Roadway’s ideal romance. However, there are some pro and cons in the result of discussing about the main characters depicted in Fifty Shades of Grey.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The aim of this research is to describe whether there is effect in teaching writing procedure text for 7th grade students of SMP Al-Fattah Buduran Sidoarjo. The instrument to collect the data was test. After collected the data, the researcher analyzed it. The analysis of data were from pre test and post test score of experimental and control class. The result of the research showed that the mean score of experimental class higher than the mean of control class (83 > 69.07) and the t-test result showed the value of t-test is higher than the value of t-table. The value of t-test was 6.163 while the value of t-table on α = 5% was 1.699. It indicated that the hypothesis of this research was accepted. For the next researcher, hope this research can be alternative method for teaching writing procedure text through video.

Abstract

Two stay two stray strategy is a fun learning activity because the strategy makes students motivated in learning to write report text. This research uses classroom action research to solve some problems at class IX SMP Al-muhajirin somengko in learning to write English. The problems are less interested in writing English, lack of ideas, grammar, and lack vocabulary. Based on the problems the writer tried to conduct classroom action research by applying two stay two stray strategy. The purpose of this research are: (1) To describe the implementation of two stay two stray strategy in teaching writing for nine grade students of SMP Al-Muhajirin Sumengko. (2) To describe the improvement of writing ability of nine grade students of SMP Al-Muhajirin Sumengko after implementing two stay two stray strategy. (3) To describe the student's response to the implementation of two stay two stray strategy. This study was conducted in 1 cycle of two meetings through four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data collected through observation checklist, field notes, and questionnaires. The result from data analysis found that students' ability improved after post-activity assignment. The evident is  from the results of tests showing the pre-activity assignment data is 13.6 with the category of students adequate to fair, after post activity assignment is 15.7 with category student ability good to adequate. It can be concluded that two stay two stray strategy is successfully implemented to improve the ability to write students.

Abstract

Teaching writing is one skill that is taught by English teacher in school. It became important skill that student have to master writing skill. The researcher chooses Descriptive Text, because it is one of type text to describe something such as place, animal, people and things. The researcher use social media of “Instagram” to teach student in writing descriptive text to improve students writing ability. The researcher use experimental research in quantitative method which two classes as experimental and control group. The sample of the data is taken from Barunawati Junior High School students.  The researcher use snowball sampling. The result has been calculated by using SPSS 20.0. The result showed that teaching writing descriptive text using social media“Instagram” to improve students writing ability is effective.

Abstract

Reciprocal Teaching Strategy has proven as a good method in increasing students reading comprehension. This method has been applied in teaching in elementary school students, ESL (English as Second Language) and EFL (English as Foreign Language) contexts. The researcher doing a research about the implementation of Reciprocal Teaching Strategy to increase students reading comprehension. The objective of this  research is to find out whether Reciprocal Teaching Strategy is Effective in Increasing Students Reading Comprehension in Narrative Text and to know how Reciprocal Teaching Strategy enhance students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. This research use a quantitative method Quasi Experimental Design. The data is analyzed by the researcher using SPSS and Microsoft Excel. The subject are eighth grade one of the State Junior High School of Surabaya. This research done for about one month from 20th January until 22nd February 2018. Reciprocal Teaching Strategy has 4 steps in it, such as: Predicting, Questioning, Clarifying, and Summarizing. This strategy is effective for students’ cognitive process in reading that prevent from failure and the result showed Reciprocal Teaching is Effective In Reading Narrative Text, it can be seen from the significant improvement of students score of pretest to post test.

Abstract

This research aims to describe multiliteracy model in the lecture Introduction to Literature, semester 3 students of English Department, Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo. Research methods that will be used is qualitative descriptive on the lecture Introduction to Literature. Research data obtained from the results of questionnaires and interviews with students, student assignment documents, learning materials and assessment system of the lecturer. The data in this study were collected through observation which is equipped with observation, interviews with guidelines based on the guidelines of the interview, the document to see the response of the students, as well as documented through photos and videos. All data are then analyzed and checked each other. The validity and reliability of research accomplished through member check and outsider check. Discussion and consultation with experts and literature, language learning and literacy experts conducted to obtain accurate data. The research was conducted in two stages, among other things: 1)  research on the multiliteracy aspects of student in the English Department, which is reflected in multiliteracy competence in Introduction to Literature lecture; 2) research on the students’ response  against the multiliteracy competence in the lecture of Introduction to literature.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyse the relationship between human and animal in Kate DiCamillo’s novel entitled The Magician’s Elephant. This study analyzed how the people in The Magician’s Elephant treat the animal. From the analysis in the research, the researcher found the disharmony of the relationship between humans and animals in the novel. This novel is very anthropocentric, where the people in it do not build good relations with animal, including exploiting and treating animal improperly. Ecocriticism opposes excessive exploitation of nature. All animals in the world have their own rights to life no less certainly as human do. Ecocriticism believes that animals could feel like the human in the world, aware of the world, also aware of what happens to them. Include their bodies, their freedom, even their lives. The researcher used ecocritcism theory to support this research. Qualitative descriptive is used as the research method in this research. Based on the analysis the reasearcher conclude that The Magician’s Elephant have the animal right issues, where humans ought to establish good relations with nature, especially animals

Abstract

Learning English, as outlined in Curriculum 2013, is more directed at mastering the ability to write text-based genres. In this study the author introduces game by utilizing the Android Emulator. The problem of this research is to find out the effectiveness of using the Andoid Emulator tool as an effective interactive learning media on the ability to write and the involvement of students in the learning process of writing. The design of this study is pre-test-post-test group design. After implementing the Game Before Writing Procedure using the Nox Android Emulator, a post-test is performed. The population is high school students SMA Bhayangkari 10 Porong. Research samples were 39 students. The Research Instruments are tests and observation sheet. Data Analysis is using the T Test and descriptive. From data, the mean difference is 12,435. This means that Learning with Game Before Writing Procedure has an influence on the ability of Writing Report.. 80% of students are actively involved in the game. Based on the results of the T Test for the Utilization of the Nox Android Emuator in the implementation of Game Before Writing Learning Procedures, it is effective in improving report writing skills. The fun game encourages student involvement

Abstract

Learning of cross cultural based writing skills is the process of conveying different cultural values to be consciously understood and presented in written text. The purpose of the research is to convey and apply the new culture of various national capitals in learning writing skills. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design, the data were collected directly by observing  the activities of ECP (English Camp Program). in Mojokerto. Then, researcher analyzed the dat using content analysis of social treatment with  reducing, presenting data and drawing conclusions.The result is cross-cultural based learning makes ECP participants easy to write because of the availability of a variety of theoretically and practically references. Cross-cultural based learning is not a psychological problem but a very interesting scientific study to be applied into real life. Cross-cultural understanding is the main element in producing comprehensive writing skill.

Abstract

Reading skill has been found to be one of difficult skills to achieve for many learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Importantly, based on the preliminary study, narrative texts  are deemed to be difficult.  This study was conducted to investigate the students’ difficulties in reading text at a private primary school in Batu, involving 29 ninth grade students in the academic year of 2018-2019 as the samples. Employing the purposive sampling method by which the best class was selected, the researcher used10-items of a closed-ended questionnaire to collect the data. In the analysis, some aspects of the narrative text such as words, structure, language feature, character, setting, plot, moral value, and point of view were highlighted. Consistently, narrative texts were found to be the most difficult text faced by students at school. According to the English teacher, students got the difficulties because of lack of vocabulary, the use of simple past tense, and the instruction to make sense of the moral values. Further, difficulties pertain to the effort to comprehend the structure, point of view, and the words.
