Abstract

This paper discussed the study of English and Indonesian word construction based on grammatical errors. Grammatical errors were analyzed by error analysis. The purpose of this paper wanted to know the kinds of grammatical errors and the factors caused it. The qualitative approach was used in this research as the methodology because this study described the data without analysis statistic. The qualitative descriptive revealed the phenomena of linguistic which found in the translation text. In data collection, the researcher used text translation, Indonesian-English that had translated by the fourth semester of student’s English Department. Moreover, the researcher read deeply and grouped and noted the data to find the valid data. The result of this paper were 11 kinds of grammatical errors, they are: misuse of determiner, omission of determiner, misuse of verb, misuse of auxiliary verb, omission of verb, misuse of preposition, misuse of conjunction, misuse of pronoun, omission of pronoun, misuse of singular noun, and misuse of Noun Phrase (NP). In addition to, this study found the factors of the grammatical errors, they are; first, interference of the first language, namely Indonesian. Second, the difference between Indonesian and English structure was also the factor of the grammatical errors.

Abstract

The researcher used Franz Kafka‟s The Metamorphosis because the story in that novel contained the concept ofexistentialism, namely nothingness which was experienced by the main character, Gregor. The objectives of thisresearch were for describing the characterization of Gregor in that novel, and analyzing Gregor‟s representationof nothingness in that novel. In this research, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative to analyze the datawhich was depend on the statements of the problem. On the other hands, the researcher also used two dataresources; they were library and internet resources. From this research, the researcher found Gregor‟scharacterization which told about the way of understanding about his characteristics. Those were negativecharacteristics which were represented through direct and indirect method. Moreover, the researcher foundGregor‟s nothingness or non-being because he had negative characteristics in himself. As long as heexperienced that position, he was incapable to conduct the job. Instead, he refused his existence, and hepreferred to live by locking himself in his room, exactly under the mattress. Thus, his parents and his sistercould not meet and find him anytime to make him free as human being

Abstract

The researcher analyzed figurative language in Jokowi‟s speech by using stylistics and context theory. Theresearcher could analyze Jokowi‟s speech in social community and eventually finding meaning in everyexpression of speech that were appeared. In this study, researcher used the descriptive qualitative to analyze thedata. The researcher approach were stylistics and context teory for analyzing the variety of figurative languagesuch as anaphora, simile, epiphora, anadiplosis, symploce. The researcher used the video and text of Jokowispeech. Some type of figurative language were found in this research. There were meaning in every phrases,repetition of words and emphazing words to find the true meaning. The Jokowi showed that the main purpose ofhis speech was to affect the APEC CEO participantto invest in Indonesia.

Abstract

Physical deficiencies sometimes cause bullying, but there are also many people who have senseof solidarity. “Wonder” (2012) by RJ. Palacio tells about a boy with this deficiency and thisstudy was meant to analyze the addressing terms used among the characters illustratingsolidarity. The aims of the research were to find kinds of solidarity addressing terms chosen bythe characters; the reason and the kind of situation of using the addressing terms. The dialogueswere framed and foregrounded to collect the data. Wardhaugh (2006) addressing terms andLindenberg et. al. (2006) solidarity behaviour indicators were used as the main theories toanalyze the data. The result revealed that there were four kinds of addressing terms foundmentioning first name, kinship term, nickname, and endearment name used in various butmostly friendly, quarreling and serious situation.

Abstract

Writing skill is considered to be more complex and difficult to learn. Students’s skill in writing is still low. Thestudents get difficult to develop their ideas because based on the research, most of the students do not have anyvocabularies to write and they cannot develop the contents of the story. So, it is very important to help them inincreasing their ability in writing. The objective of this research is to find out wheter using animated video asmedium in writing narrative text is effective or not. This research is conducted at SMPN 1 Tarik Sidoarjo.Theresearcher used experimental design. The sample of this research was the eighth grade students with totalnumber was 68 students. The subject were VIII-C as the experimental class and VIII-D as the control classwhich each class consist of 34 students. It was gotten by random sampling. The data collection used test (try out,pre-test, and post test) as instrument to measure the the output of the students. From the data output that wasaccounted by using T-Test (α= 5%), the result of data analysis is tcount = 5.424 and ttable = 2.032, so tcount > ttable, itmeans that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. From this research, it can be concluded that there is significantdifference between the students who are taught by using animated video and those who are not taught by usinganimated video.

Abstract

This article is an analysis about human personality, especially about the correlation between adult personalitieswith childhood life. There are two research problems in this article; (1) How are Charlie’s personalities in the novel ThePerks of Being a Wallflower ?, (2) What are the correlation between Charlie’s personalities with his Childhoodlife?.Whereas, for the object of the research, this article just focused on the analysing of Charlie’s personalities that belongsto psychoanalysis aspect. This article looked deeply through Charlie’s id, ego, and superego in order to identify Charlie’spersonalities. This article also analyzed the correlation between Charlie’s personalities with his Childhood life. This articleused the novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower written by Stephen Chbosky as the object of the research and only focusedon the main character named Charlie. To support the analysis, the researcher uses psychoanalysis theories comes fromSigmund Freud. The researcher also uses the other theories that are related to the analysis which are gathered from booksand websites. This article uses qualitative research to analyze and collect data from the sources. It is because the data iscollected based on words form and the data is analyzed for description and theme using text analysis and interpreting thelarger meaning of the finding. The result of the analysis shows that Charlie’s personalities are Shy, Emotional, Honest,Caring, Uncommunicative, Hard Working, and High Sexual Desire. It also shows that Charlie’s childhood life has a big rolefor developing Charlie’s adult personalities.

Abstract

This study is sociolinguistics. It focuses on register used by the workers of PT. Multi Duta Utari. In productionDepartment, workers in PT. Multi Duta Utari, used register in context with their occupation. They use registerwhen they communicated in location production department of PT. Multi Duta Utari. The data taken are from inthe two statements, there are what are the type of the register used by the workers of PT. Multi Duta Utari, andwhy do the workers use such as the register. There are the objectives of the study that must be answered: (1)Toidentify the registers used by the workers in company of PT. Multi Duta Utari (2)To describe the reasons whythe workers use such registers. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data are collected from thesources including the subject and the place from the collecting data analysis, and triangulation. Finally, thewriter hopes that the finding will be useful to enrich our insight of sociolinguistics.

Abstract

This present research focuses on two purposes: they are to find out the application of Vladimir Propp’s theory on narrative text models used in Junior High School Textbooks and the authenticity of narrative text models used in Junior high school textbooks. To answer the first research question, the theory is used to analyze the data through document analysis and the second research question answered by comparing the analyses of the text models of JHS textbooks and the authentic texts. The data were four narrative text models taken from four junior high school textbooks that contain narrative texts and the storybook as an example of authentic text. The result showed that the theory was generally applicated on narrative text models used in Junior High School and all of them are belong to not authentic. Three of them are the simplification of the authentic texts and the other is created text. This was caused by context of used (classroom), cultural context and students level of knowledge

Abstract

This study was conducted in order to find out how to improve students’ skills in retelling at kindergarten students of JAC School Surabaya. It described the implementation of Using Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) in teaching learning process and reported students’ retelling story ability. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) which is conducted to solve the students’ during story telling time and students’ ability in retelling story. The study uses Burns theory. This Classroom Action Research has four steps in one cycle. Those are planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The writer used a descriptive qualitative design to gain the information concerning process of TPRS method. There are three steps of TPRS teaching method. Those are Established the Meaning, Tell a class story and Read. There was an activity called circling in tell a class story step According to the data, the students made an improvement of retelling story use their own language from the first to the second cycle. The average of students score in retelling story rubric of the first cycle was 2 as described as fair category. While the second cycle average of retelling story rubric was 4 and categorized as excellent. The data was the result of direct observation. The analysis was done by describing the implementation of using TPRS in learning process in the classroom.

Abstract

There are four main skills in learning English, writing, listening, reading, and speaking. In this research, the researcher focused on writing narrative text for tenth grader students of SMK PGRI 13 Surabaya. The medium that is used in this research is webtoon. It is kind of comic series which has picture and narration so it can be make the students learn how to write narrative text easier. The purpose of this research is to find out the effectiveness of webtoon in developing students’ writing skill in narrative text. The researcher used quantitative method and the data were collected through pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire. The researcher used two classes, experimental class and control class to do this research. After the data were collected and calculated, the result showed that the average of score got an increasing. Before getting treatment, the average score of experimental class was 55 and after getting treatment, the average score was becoming 69. Furthermore, based on the students’ response, it showed that mostly the students agreed that webtoon is useful to use in learning English, especially writing skill so webtoon can be effective to develop students’ writing skill in narrative text.
