Abstract

This study aimed to examine the various types of slips of the tongue produced by students of the English and Literature Department at the State Islamic University of Alauddin Makassar during seminar proposal presentations. It also sought to explore the underlying factors contributing to the occurrence of these speech errors. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected from five participants through audio recordings and follow-up interviews.  The findings revealed six types of slips of the tongue based on Fromkin’s (1973) classification: anticipation, exchange, addition, perseveration, substitution, and deletion, with addition being the most frequent. Interview results indicated that cognitive load was the main contributing factor, categorized into intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load. These findings suggest that slips of the tongue are closely linked to the cognitive demands students face during formal academic speaking tasks.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of verbal ability and interaction on children’s language skills during English read-aloud activities. Read-aloud sessions are widely recognized as a pivotal method to enhance children’s cognitive and linguistic development. The research employed a structural equation modeling approach to analyze data from 108 children aged 6 to 9 years participating in interactive English storytelling sessions. Key variables included verbal ability, interaction, and language skill development. Findings reveal that verbal ability significantly influences language skills, with a path coefficient of 0.400 (p = 0.001), underscoring its critical role in vocabulary acquisition and sentence construction. Interaction, though showing a moderate effect (0.185, p = 0.068), highlights the importance of collaborative learning and engagement in strengthening comprehension and contextual language use. Additionally, the response to read-aloud stories demonstrate a meaningful contribution (0.331, p = 0.009), emphasizing the role of narrative exposure in fostering linguistic competence. These findings provide actionable insights for educators and parents, suggesting that incorporating interactive elements and verbal practice into English read-aloud sessions can significantly boost children’s language skills. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on effective language development strategies and emphasizes the importance of creating engaging, communicative learning environments.

Abstract

Language contact between cultures often leads to the borrowing of words. In addition, arbitrary characteristics of a language may affect to word absorption to another language. Unfortunately, word meaning could be changed from its original meaning and new meaning is created in another language. The research aims to identify the kind of semantic changes which occurred in English loanwords into Indonesian, to disclose the motives of the speakers in using English loanwords, and factors facilitating the semantic changes. The data is the direct utterances gained from daily informal situation among Indonesians located in Makassar, South Sulawesi. It was collected by using fieldwork research observation, questionnaire, and interview. Then, it is analyzed by employing qualitative and descriptive method. The finding reveals that there are six types of semantic changes of English loanwords into Indonesian which are widening or broadening meaning, narrowing meaning, meaning shift, metonymy, metaphor, and synecdoche. The speakers use those English loanwords because of some motives such as the need filling motive and prestige motive. There are also two factors facilitating the speakers in using those English loanwords in their daily life which are social factor and psychological factor.

Abstract

In daily communication, some individuals struggle to express their ideas due to language limitations. As a result, they often resort to code-switching. This phenomenon is also observed among students learning English. This study aimed to analyze the types and functions of code-switching used in English discussion-based learning. A qualitative descriptive method was employed in this research. The participants were 36 eleventh-grade students from the Language Class. Data were collected through observation and interviews. The findings revealed that students used three types of code-switching during discussions: intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, and tag switching. Among these, intra-sentential switching was the most frequently used. Furthermore, the study identified four main functions of code-switching during discussions: emphasizing a point, substituting unknown words, reinforcing requests, and clarifying a point. The analysis indicated that the primary reason for code-switching was students’ limited English vocabulary. Additional linguistic challenges included poor grammar, unclear pronunciation, and a general lack of fluency in English. Consequently, code-switching plays a crucial role in the learning process, as it helps students better understand the material being discussed.

Abstract

This study explores the concept of empowering politeness in protest discourse within young Muslim literature, employing a critical discourse analysis (CDA) framework. It examines how politeness strategies are used not to soften resistance, but to assert agency, uphold moral authority, and engage in constructive dissent. The study employs a qualitative approach, using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to examine a corpus of texts written by young Muslim authors. These texts cover two novel narratives, reflecting a Moslem sociocultural context. Through close textual analysis, the results of the study showcase how the authors empower protest not as an act of aggression, but as a principled stance that aligns with religious and cultural norms. The results of the study also show how linguistic choices and strategies reflect etiquette (adab) and wisdom (Hikmah) values of respect, empathy, and ethical engagement, even within confrontational contexts. The research results further highlight the pedagogical potential of such texts in educational settings. They offer rich material for teaching critical literacy, intercultural communication, and ethical reasoning. Through the lens of empowering politeness, students can learn to articulate dissent responsibly. This study advocates for the integration of diverse voices and values in both literary appreciation and language education.

Abstract

This pilot study investigates the efficacy of speech-to-text (STT) technology as an objective feedback mechanism for pronunciation assessment and self-correction in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. The research involved 75 Japanese university students across three classes engaging with STT applications for two 25-minute sessions in a single semester. Data collected included successful transcription rates, specific pronunciation feature improvements, and student affective responses. Results indicate that STT software provides immediate, objective feedback that complements traditional pronunciation instruction methods, with students demonstrating measurable improvement in transcription success rates (from 38% to 62%) and reporting increased confidence in their speaking abilities. This pilot study contributes to the growing field of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) by offering a practical, accessible approach to pronunciation feedback that can be implemented with minimal technological requirements and time investment

Abstract

The use of a language is governed by several social factors that exist in its speech community. Gender is one of the factors where each gender could have different norms within their speech behavior, including in complimenting. This descriptive-comparative qualitative research aims to understand the strategies and functions of compliments based on gender in English and Indonesian in America's Got Talent and Indonesia's Got Talent 2023. The results of this study show that, regarding frequency, English female judges are more frequent in giving compliments, while in Indonesian, the gender distribution is more balanced. Both genders in both languages used direct and indirect compliment strategies. However, there is a difference in indirect compliment strategies, where in English, it is used evenly by both genders. In contrast, in Indonesia, women use indirect compliments in tiny numbers. Furthermore, the syntax structures and focus of direct compliments in English and Indonesian also exhibit differences. In English, both genders prefer personal pronouns, such as I, she, he, or they, in their compliment structure, though the male judges focused more on non-personal compliments, opposite to the female judges. In Indonesian, both genders avoid using personal pronouns and directly use noun phrases referring to their compliment's subject. Both genders also prefer to utilize a non-personal focus on their compliments. The function of compliments in both languages shows more similarities and only differs in one function, namely, the function of refining the Face Threatening Act (FTA

Abstract

The present research investigates the connection between students' language aptitude and their listening comprehension and further examines which specific aptitude components are most closely linked to listening performance. In order to address these objectives, a quantitative correlational design was employed. This research involved seventy-two participants from a Senior High School, selected randomly by clusters to minimize the bias potential. The data were collected through two instrument tests; LLAMA Aptitude Test and Self-made Listening comprehension test that were administered to the participant in two different sessions. The results of those tests were then analyzed by using Spearman’s rho correlation, as the data did not follow a normal distribution. The results from the analysis demonstrated a moderate, yet significant, positive association between language aptitude scores and listening comprehension, with a coefficient of .441. Furthermore, among the four subtests, sound recognition (LLAMA D) and grammatical inference (LLAMA F) showed significant correlations with listening comprehension, while sound symbol recognition (LLAMA E) showed a weak yet still showed significant correlation with listening. However, vocabulary learning (LLAMA B) did not demonstrate a meaningful relationship. These findings suggest that successful listening comprehension relies more heavily on phonological and grammatical processing skills rather than simple vocabulary memorization. The findings offer practical insights for language teaching, emphasizing the need to develop learners' sound processing and grammar inference abilities to improve listening skills.

Abstract

This study explores how environmental messages are constructed and conveyed through the music video Earth by Lil Dicky, analyzed using Fiske’s (1987) semiotic theory. Through the three levels of semiotic analysis namely reality, representation, and ideology, this study explains how verbal and visual signs in the music video work together to form meaningful messages related to environmental issues. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study analyzes selected segments of the video that depict environmental problems such as ecological damage and human negligence. The findings reveal that the video utilizes symbolic representations—including animated characters, color schemes, camera angles, and lyrical expressions—to convey themes of conservationism, anthropocentrism, and global collectivism. The song “Earth” serves not only as entertainment but also as a medium to raise awareness about the global environmental crisis and the urgency of collective action. This study contributes to the field of linguistics, particularly semiotic studies, by demonstrating how environmentally themed messages can be communicated through popular media.

Abstract

One of the main challenges in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at the Junior High School level is students' low ability to write recount texts that conform to the correct grammatical rules and text structure. Although recount texts are a type of text that is routinely taught, many students still experience difficulties in terms of the use of proper grammar, development of ideas, and cohesion between parts of the text. This suggests the need for an in-depth evaluation of the quality of students' texts, not only in terms of content but also in terms of their structure and function in the context of communication. This study is significant because it provides a thorough analysis of students' recount texts using the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach through three metafunctions: interpersonal, experiential, and textual. Thus, this study not only reveals the extent to which students fulfill the expected generic structures and linguistic features but also identifies areas of weakness, particularly in aspects such as tense usage, subject-verb congruence, and cohesion devices. This finding is crucial for informing the development of more targeted learning strategies, particularly in enhancing the grammatical consistency and cohesion of students' texts. By understanding the linguistic aspects that students have not mastered, teachers can design more targeted teaching interventions to improve the overall quality of student writing.
