Abstract

This study examines the level of speaking anxiety, identifies contributing factors, and explores strategies to address speaking anxiety during oral presentations in speaking classes among fourth-semester students at UIN Raden Intan Lampung. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, involving 55 English Department students. Data were collected using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), developed by Horwitz et al. (1986), was modified and used to assess Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA). This 33-item, 5-point Likert scale measures students' language anxiety. Results indicate that speaking anxiety is prevalent among the students, particularly during oral presentations, with an average FLCAS score of 36.218. Interviews with six students, representing both low and high anxiety levels, revealed several factors contributing to speaking anxiety. These include negative thinking, lack of preparation, bad experiences, low ability, low confidence, fear of making mistakes, and physical conditions. To mitigate anxiety, students suggested strategies such as thorough preparation, managing negative thoughts, increasing self-confidence, using relaxation techniques, and improving language skills. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing speaking anxiety in EFL classrooms. Educators can create a supportive environment, incorporate activities to build confidence, and teach anxiety management strategies. Institutions should consider workshops on public speaking and anxiety reduction. Additionally, integrating frequent oral practice and personalized feedback into teaching methods can enhance students' speaking performance and reduce anxiety effectively.

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study investigated the efficacy of the AI-powered Papago application in enhancing vocabulary acquisition among tenth-grade students at SMAN 7 Bandar Lampung. The research aimed to address common student difficulties in vocabulary retention and application by leveraging AI's potential for personalized, contextually accurate, and interactive learning. Focusing on five key vocabulary categories—nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, and conjunctions, particularly within the context of descriptive texts—the study employed a quantitative research design to assess Papago's impact. Data were collected via pre-tests and post-tests, supplemented by qualitative feedback from students and teachers regarding the application's usability. Statistical analysis using SPSS 27 revealed a significant difference (p=0.004<0.05) in vocabulary mastery among students who utilized Papago. This outcome supports the alternative hypothesis, indicating that the intervention effectively improved students' vocabulary mastery. The findings suggest that AI applications such as Papago hold considerable promise in surmounting prevalent vocabulary-learning challenges and fostering greater student engagement.

Abstract

The present research investigates the connection between students' language aptitude and their listening comprehension and further examines which specific aptitude components are most closely linked to listening performance. In order to address these objectives, a quantitative correlational design was employed. This research involved seventy-two participants from a Senior High School, selected randomly by clusters to minimize the bias potential. The data were collected through two instrument tests; LLAMA Aptitude Test and Self-made Listening comprehension test that were administered to the participant in two different sessions. The results of those tests were then analyzed by using Spearman’s rho correlation, as the data did not follow a normal distribution. The results from the analysis demonstrated a moderate, yet significant, positive association between language aptitude scores and listening comprehension, with a coefficient of .441. Furthermore, among the four subtests, sound recognition (LLAMA D) and grammatical inference (LLAMA F) showed significant correlations with listening comprehension, while sound symbol recognition (LLAMA E) showed a weak yet still showed significant correlation with listening. However, vocabulary learning (LLAMA B) did not demonstrate a meaningful relationship. These findings suggest that successful listening comprehension relies more heavily on phonological and grammatical processing skills rather than simple vocabulary memorization. The findings offer practical insights for language teaching, emphasizing the need to develop learners' sound processing and grammar inference abilities to improve listening skills.

Abstract

This study examined the 2019 National Examination language scores of senior high school students in Jakarta and Lampung, Indonesia. National examinations are a cornerstone of Indonesia's education system, vital for assessing student competency and ensuring quality control. However, persistent regional disparities in these exam results are a known challenge. This research aimed to address a gap in the literature by directly comparing these language scores between the urban center of Jakarta and the more rural Lampung. The results revealed a significant performance gap, with Jakarta students consistently scoring higher. Factors such as resource availability, teacher quality, and socioeconomic status are discussed as potential contributors to this disparity. The study highlights the ongoing challenge of achieving educational equity in Indonesia and underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions to bridge these regional differences.

Abstract

This study is about semio-pragmatic analysis in tourism brochures. The objective of a brochure is to promote products and services that use correct terms or language. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the many linguistic aspects found in the brochure to determine the meaning or reveal a message inside it. This descriptive qualitative research employs Pierce's semiotic research analysis framework for signs, Yule's pragmatic approach to speech acts and Royce’s intersemiotic complementarity theory. The materials for this study are linguistic elements found in Dwidaya tour brochures. In this study, the brochure contains two language aspects: visual and spoken elements. Visual components such as signs, indexes, and symbols help readers understand the message in the brochure. Meanwhile, verbal aspects are realized in two ways: direct, which conveys messages explicitly or plainly, and indirect, which conveys signals implicitly or indirectly. Intersemiotic complementarity is the realization of verbal element and to analyze visual element realized. And how the visual and verbal element relate to each other in Tourism Brochure.
