Abstract

strengthening the character of the Lewokluok indigenous community in East Flores. Sociosemiotic theory as a scalpel for the meaning and social function of carved motifs on beledan koke bale. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method to examine the symbolic meaning of beledan in the lives of the Lewokluok indigenous community. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and FGD with traditional leaders. The data was analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The study results show that there are 18 beledan on the koke bale, representing the identities of 16 indigenous tribes. Each beledan has carved motifs that contain symbolic meanings related to leadership and courage, struggle, fertility and love, religiosity, family ties, love, service, solidarity, as well as health and survival. Meanwhile, the social cohesion that is conveyed through the beledan koke bale plays a role in strengthening the character of the Lewokluok indigenous community in three main ways: (1) to be a symbol of collective identity that fosters a sense of togetherness, love for others, and respect for ancestral heritage; (2) strengthening social solidarity so as to form a character of mutual trust between ethnic groups, a tolerant attitude towards diversity; and (3) deepening spirituality that fosters a humble character, gratitude, inner peace, and empathy in community life.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factual elements of the story in Naguib Mahfouz's novel Afrah al-Qubbah using Robert Stanton's Structuralism approach. The focus of this study covers three intrinsic elements classified as factual elements of the story, namely characters, plot, and setting. The method used is qualitative descriptive with the technique of reading and noting the text of the novel. The results of the study show that the characters, plot, and setting have structural connections that form a complete story. Abbas, as the main character, becomes the center of conflict through the manuscript he writes, which reveals the reality of his family and raises moral, emotional, and social conflicts. The plot develops systematically through the stages of exposition, complication, climax, and resolution, which reinforce the tragic nuances in the story. The social setting, place, and time also support the development of the conflict and illustrate the breakdown of values in society. Overall, these three elements are integrated in constructing meaning and presenting social criticism, thus emphasizing the importance of the structural relationship between intrinsic elements in forming the totality of the novel's meaning.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the politeness strategies employed by netizens, particularly Generation Z, in the comment section of the Instagram account @azizahsalsha. Through this research, it is expected that language politeness as a cultural value is upheld in Indonesian society—especially in social media interactions on Instagram—can be better understood, including the linguistic markers of politeness, so that users become more cautious in expressing comments. This study adopts a qualitative research design with a pragmatic approach. The data consists of written texts collected through observation, documentation, transcription, and note-taking techniques. The observation method was applied by examining utterances captured through screenshots. The data were analyzed descriptively using the politeness theories proposed by Brown and Levinson and Watts. The findings indicate the use of direct strategies, positive politeness strategies, and negative politeness strategies. However, these strategies are predominantly realized through sarcastic word choices, resulting in a very low level of politeness, and in many cases, impolite language use among Generation Z. This study is significant in enhancing awareness of linguistic politeness literacy among Generation Z in digital interactions, particularly on Instagram . Abstract

This study aims to describe the transformation of the short story Dogdog Pangréwong into a digital comic through an intertextual approach. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, using the short story Dogdog Pangréwong as the source text and the digital comic created by the researcher as the transformed text. Data were collected through documentation and library research, while the analysis was conducted through close reading, classification of transformation elements, and examination of the intertextual relationship between the two texts. The findings indicate that the transformation from a verbal narrative to a visual-verbal medium involves the preservation of the core narrative structure, adjustments in presentation to accommodate the characteristics of the new medium, and a shift in the system of signs. Despite medium-specific modifications, the original meaning of the story is maintained through selective adaptation. The transformation demonstrates that digital comics function not only as a medium of interpretation but also as a form of revitalization of classical Sundanese literature within the context of digital literacy. Thus, literary adaptation across media does not merely produce a new representational form but also expands the preservation of regional literature. Key words: Dogdog Pangréwong, Digital Comic, Transformation

Abstract

This study analyzes Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy toward Fiji through the Harmony for the Pacific initiative within the Indo-Pacific bilateral framework. The Indo-Pacific is strategically important for Indonesia due to its geopolitical significance and historical-cultural ties with Melanesian countries, including Fiji. Shared cultural heritage and common developmental experiences provide a strong foundation for soft power-based relations. Using a qualitative descriptive method grounded in Multitrack Diplomacy In the Harmony for the Pacific program, elements of Indonesian literature are indirectly present through oral literature and visual narratives. Program participants not only engage in performing arts but also learn the "storytelling style" of the local community in Labuan Bajo, which reflects the rich narrative traditions of the archipelago. Furthermore, the screening of the film "ORPA," which tells the story of a Papuan girl's struggle, demonstrates how visual narrative functions as a modern literary medium to convey Indonesian humanitarian and cultural values, particularly from the eastern region, which has ethnographic connections and cultural diplomacy theory, the study finds that Harmony for the Pacific has strengthened Indonesia–Fiji relations by enhancing people-to-people engagement, cross-cultural understanding, and Indonesia’s positive image in the Pacific. The program has also generated spillover effects, particularly in economic and educational cooperation, highlighting cultural diplomacy as an effective instrument of Indonesia’s foreign policy in the Pacific region.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the discourse construction of news coverage regarding the hoisting of the One Piece flag in Tempo.co and CNNIndonesia.com. This phenomenon is understood not merely as an expression of popular culture, but also as a symbol that generates public debate concerning nationalism, freedom of expression, and the relationship between the state and civil society. This research employs a qualitative approach within a critical paradigm, utilizing Teun A. van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis model, which encompasses three interrelated dimensions: textual structure, social cognition, and social context. The data consist of two news texts published in August 2025: “Problematika Pengibaran Bendera One Piece” from Tempo.co and “Wamendagri Sebut Fenomena Bendera One Piece Bagian dari Ekspresi Warga” from CNNIndonesia.com. The findings reveal that Tempo.co tends to frame the phenomenon as a symbol of social criticism rooted in public dissatisfaction, while CNNIndonesia.com presents it as a form of civic expression that remains bounded by state symbolism and constitutional norms. These findings confirm that media institutions are not neutral actors; rather, they actively construct the social and political meaning of events through language, source selection, and ideological positioning.
