Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of Indonesian-English code switching in the lyrics of the song "Now I Know" by Kaleb J. The purpose of the study is to identify the types of code switching and describe their pragmatic functions in building emotional meaning. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a sociolinguistic approach. Data in the form of 36 lines of lyrics are explained using Poplack's typology and Holmes's theory of code switching functions. The results show that intrasentential code switching dominates with expressive and poetic functions. English is used in the chorus to increase the emotional load, while Indonesian is used in the verses to build the narrative. The findings also show that intrasentential code switching dominates at 69.2%, strengthening Poplack's theory about the tendency of bilinguals to use language changes within a clause for efficiency and diagnostics. This study concludes that code switching functions as a musical composition strategy to regulate the emotional intensity of the song.

Abstract

This study examines expressive speech acts used by netizens in the Instagram comment section of @pkucity regarding the Abdul Wahid case. The research was motivated by the increasing use of social media as a platform for expressing opinions, emotions, and responses to social issues. The objective of this study was to identify and describe the forms of expressive speech acts found in netizens’ comments. This research employed a qualitative approach using content analysis. The data consisted of written comments collected from Instagram posts related to the Abdul Wahid case that generated significant public interaction. Data were gathered through documentation, reading, and note-taking techniques and analyzed through coding, classification, interpretation, and reporting. Data validity was ensured through credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. The findings revealed that condemnation was the most dominant expressive speech act (56 data), followed by criticism (40 data), complaints (20 data), expressions of sadness (17 data), and blaming (10 data). Expressions of praise and congratulations were found in two instances each, while gratitude, forgiveness, and condolences were not identified. The results indicate that social media communication is largely dominated by negative expressions reflecting public disappointment, criticism, and emotional responses to social issues. These findings demonstrate that the meaning of speech on social media is strongly influenced by the context and communicative intentions of the speakers.

Abstract

This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach to describe the forms of commissive speech acts in the public debate of the 2024 regent and deputy regent candidates of Poso Regency. Data were collected through non-participant observation, listening, and note-taking techniques on the candidates’ utterances across three debate sessions broadcast through official media channels. The data were analyzed using the interactive model proposed by Miles and Huberman. The findings reveal 59 commissive utterances, consisting of 56 promises (marked by expressions such as will, we will maintain, menjamin guarantee, we will actualiz, we will expand, we will establish, we will implement, we aspire, dedicated, and resolute, the remaining utterances consist of 2 instances of commissive offering, marked by offering, and 1 instance of commissive refusing, marked by dissent. The study shows that commissive speech acts are not only used to deliver political programs but also to build public trust through issues of unity, religious moderation, welfare, and regional development. The novelty of this research lies in its examination of commissive speech acts in local political debates within a post-conflict society context, which has been rarely discussed in previous studies. The results contribute to the development of pragmatics in political communication and demonstrate that commissive speech acts function as a linguistic strategy used by candidates to express political commitments and build public trust in public debates.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the rapid development of information and communication technology, which has significantly transformed the way people interact. One platform that provides a space for interaction through user comments is YouTube. The objective of this study is to examine the politeness of expressive speech acts used in the comment section of Rocky Gerung's YouTube channel. This research employs Leech’s politeness theory and adopts the nineteen forms of expressive speech acts proposed by Nabila Syafarendra. A qualitative approach was applied in this study. The data consisted of expressive speech acts containing politeness principles, while the data source was comments posted on videos uploaded to Rocky Gerung's YouTube channel. Data were collected through documentation, reading, and observation techniques. The data were analyzed using the content analysis method based on Burhan Bungin's (2008) approach. The findings reveal eleven forms of expressive speech acts with varying degrees of politeness, namely praising, thanking, criticizing, interrupting, blaming, expressing sympathy, accusing, insulting, degrading, supporting, and expressing surprise. Criticizing speech acts may be considered polite or impolite depending on the choice of words and the manner in which they are conveyed. Meanwhile, interrupting, blaming, accusing, insulting, and degrading speech acts tend to violate politeness principles because they contain elements of belittling, attacking, or showing disrespect, thereby conflicting with the tact maxim, approbation maxim, and agreement maxim. Furthermore, speech acts expressing surprise can be categorized as polite when conveyed appropriately and without offending others, but they may become impolite when accompanied by sarcastic or derogatory expressions.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to develop and evaluate teaching materials for listening skills in fairy tale texts that integrate the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) model and the PAKEM (Active, Creative, Effective, and Enjoyable Learning) approach to bridge the pedagogical gap in junior high schools. The research method uses an ADDIE-based research and development (R&D) model, involving 128 students and 12 Indonesian language teachers in Padang City as participants. Data were collected through test instruments, observations, and expert validation, then analyzed using a mixed-methods design with concurrent triangulation. The results show that the developed materials have very high validity (M > 97%), reliable instruments, and context-specific effectiveness (tcalc = 4.70 > tcrit = 1.70). The practicality of the materials also reached a high level with a PAKEM score of 84.36%, although the active learning aspect still requires optimization. It is concluded that the holistic synthesis of TPS and PAKEM produces a valid, effective, and practical listening instructional product in the tested classroom context. The implications of this research emphasize the urgency of providing "ready-to-use" materials as a pedagogical bridge for teachers, as well as the need for ongoing scaffolding to transform listening from a passive activity into an enjoyable, student-centered, socio-cognitive event.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of role play technique on seventh grade students' English speaking proficiency at SMP Negeri 37 Pekanbaru. The research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group design involving pretest and posttest. The sample consisted of 70 students: 36 students from class VII 7 as the experimental group and 34 students from class VII 6 as the control group, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through speaking performance tests assessing five aspects: fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension. Statistical analysis was conducted using paired samples t-test and independent samples t-test. The findings reveal that the experimental group's mean score increased significantly from 43.41 (pretest) to 62.82 (posttest), with a mean difference of 19.41 points. The paired samples t-test yielded t = -56.544 with Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant improvement in the experimental group's speaking proficiency after treatment. Furthermore, the independent samples t-test comparing posttest scores between groups showed t = -10.377 with Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 (p < 0.05), confirming a significant difference between the experimental group (M = 62.82) and the control group (M = 47.54). These results demonstrate that role play technique significantly and positively affects students' English speaking proficiency. The findings imply that English teachers should consider integrating role play into speaking instruction to create more interactive and communicative learning environments, thereby enhancing students' speaking confidence and proficiency. Additionally, this study provides empirical evidence supporting the use of role play as an effective pedagogical strategy in EFL classrooms and may serve as a reference for future research on interactive language teaching techniques.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of imagery found in the novel Yuanfen by Casa based on Pradopo’s theory of imagery. The research employed a qualitative approach using the content analysis method. The data consisted of words, phrases, sentences, and dialogues in the novel that contain imagery elements. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques, and then analyzed through the stages of identification, classification of imagery types, and interpretation of their meanings within the context of the story. The findings revealed that there are 90 instances of imagery in the novel Yuanfen, consisting of six types: visual imagery, auditory imagery, kinesthetic imagery, tactile imagery, gustatory imagery, and olfactory imagery. Kinesthetic imagery was found to be the most dominant type, followed by visual and auditory imagery. The use of imagery in the novel functions to clarify the depiction of events, settings, and the emotional conditions of the characters, enabling readers to imagine the situations in a more concrete and imaginative manner. Therefore, imagery plays an important role in building the readers’ aesthetic experience.
