Abstract

In general, regional integration takes the form of political economy initiatives focused on commercial interests to achieve broader socio-political and security goals. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional organization in Southeast Asia. After the end of the Cold War, ASEAN underwent changes, especially in terms of norms, governance, and collective identity. This article aims to explain the institutional reform and transformation of ASEAN's identity as a regional organization after the end of Cold War era. Using Alexander Wendt's concept of Collective Identity, this article argues that the 1997-1998 crisis and political dynamics in Southeast Asia unraveled the weaknesses of ASEAN's traditional principles as a regional organization. This led to skepticism towards the credibility and function of ASEAN. In order to restore its image and credibility, ASEAN conducted institutional reform in some stages. The institutional reform started with conceptualizing shared ideas through the establishment of the ASEAN Community, which was then institutionalized in a set of norms through the ASEAN Charter. These institutional reforms gave birth to a common set of ideas and norms for the member states. These shared ideas and norms indicate the transformation of ASEAN's collective identity as a regional organization that is more in line with universal norms such as human rights, democracy, and good governance.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the political strategies of Fatayat as a civil society organization to win women candidates in the 2019 legislative elections. To do so, it uses two concepts of Gwendolyn Bevis’s theory of civil society and political parties which emphasizes constructive relationships between civil society organizations and political parties, and Peter Schroder’s theory on political strategies and tactics to win female candidates of legislative elections. This article uses a qualitative method and collects the data through interview techniques. The result of this study indicates that the relationship between Fatayat and PKB (Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa) runs constructively for both have a shared history. This constructive relationship can also be applied to explain the political dynamic within Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). This article concludes that the Fatayat’s strategy to win women candidates in the legislative elections was supported by a constructive relationship between Fatayat and PKB.  This finding contributes to the study of the relationship between civil society organizations and political parties.

Abstract

Digital entrepreneurship has recently become a trend in cyberspace and it is often associated with the millennials who were previously said to be the least entrepreneurial generation. The millennials are digital natives who tend to follow a trend because of globalization which opens up unlimited public spaces. This article aims to examine the motives of the Indonesian millennial generation in doing digital entrepreneurship through qualitative research methods and Jean Baudrillard's post-modern theory approach. The required data were collected through interview and observation methods. This article argues that the main motive of Indonesian millennials in digital entrepreneurship is not profit-seeking, but rather prestige-seeking by following trends on social media so that digital entrepreneurship develops among millennials. The results of the study show that the tendency of being social media trend followers has encouraged Indonesian millennials to run digital entrepreneurship. The millennials tried to follow the trend of digital entrepreneurship to express their identities in the public sphere to create a good image of themselves. By doing so, they expected to be considered prestigious members of digital society with higher social status.

Abstract

This article addresses Laos' motivations for working with China on their proposed high-speed train and railway projects. Due to its lack of access to land channels, Laos chooses to conduct its commercial and tourism cooperation with China through the BRI initiative, which is China's foreign strategy in establishing relations with ASEAN nations. We use the theory of foreign policy (FPA) to address several justifications for Laos' participation in China's high-speed rail and fast train projects. We found five reasons why Laos should join China: First, China's location allows for communication with landlocked Laos through the construction of the Laos High Speed Railway; second, China's demographics can help Laos become more prosperous;  third, Laos relies on China's natural resources to match the Lao population's consumption level; fourth, China's political system has improved bilateral ties with Laos giving Laos hope that long-term collaboration may be created with China through the construction of transportation infrastructure in the form of the China-Laos High-Speed Railway; and fifth, Laos's economic prowess can assist with commerce and provide funding for growth between Laos and China.

Abstract

The Kubu tribe, also known as Suku Anak Dalam (SAD), is an ethnic group that inhabits the Jambi province, Indonesia. They still hold tightly their ancestral culture in their daily life, depend on natural or forest resources, and live a nomadic life. Factors that influence the nomadic life of the SAD community include a belief in “Melangun” tradition. The uncontrolled logging and forest fires in Jambi resulted in their loss of forest products to sell to support their life so that their sustainability is in danger. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the empowerment of the SAD community so that they can leave the old culture and live like a modern society. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research collects the required data by employing interview, observation and documentation techniques. Data analysis uses data reduction techniques, data presentation, and verification. Then the validation technique uses source triangulation by examining data from several sources. The results of the study indicate that to empower Suku Anak Dalam (SAD), it is urgent to use two communication approaches, namely participatory communication and empowerment communication.

Abstract

The village chiefs in the Reform era in Indonesia were expected to transform from being servants of the state to being servants of their community. This hope was accompanied by a lot of support for regulatory changes to create economic equality for most local areas. However, 25 years after the Reform, the village chiefs still exercised great power so that they could easily influence and control the political participation of their citizens. Moreover, the village heads in the Reform era still came from the families of former or incumbent village heads who won the Pilkades because the wealth and connections that had been built for a long time with the villagers became the determinants of the victory of the old families. This article explains the efforts of village heads to maintain their influence so that they continue to be elected in every village head election because the power relations possessed by the old elites are still very influential for exchanging benefits as providers of life and as electoral assets. The art required data were collected in three selected villages such as Sagaherang Kidul Village, Sagalaherang Kaler Village, and Dayeuhkolot Village in Subang Regency, West Java, using a qualitative approach with descriptive method.

Abstract

This article examines tradition amidst modernization focusing on the rise and fall of the Pesta Tebu tradition and its relationship with the technological advancement of sugar factories in Cirebon district, West Java. Two villages were selected for this study as they represent sites where the Pesta Tebu tradition experienced the rise and fall in the face of modernization. This article uses a comparative method with a qualitative approach and the techniques of non-participant observation and interviews for data collection. Employing the narrative method as a data analysis technique, this study argues that modernization in the form of industrialization of sugar production resulted in the rise and fall of the Pesta Tebu tradition. When the management of the sugar factories renewed the technology of sugar production, the Pesta Tebu tradition survived and continued, but when this was not the case, the Pesta Tebu tradition died out. All this shows that modernization did not destroy tradition, but rather contributed to the rise and survival of tradition within communities. Comparing two cases of the Pesta Tebu tradition, this article contributes to a better understanding of the impact of modernization on tradition in that industrialisation resulted in a varied impact on tradition.

Abstract

The issue of gender inequality is one of the big problems that Japan is facing nowadays. In the annual survey of the Women Economic Forum, Japan often occupies the lowest position in the indicators of women's participation in politics. This issue became one of Shinzo Abe's priorities when he was elected Prime Minister in 2012. Through a major policy during his administration known as Abenomics, Shinzo Abe introduced Womenomics as a gender-based policy strategy to increase women's participation in the workforce, including in politics. Womenomics was developed into several policies that are expected to provide a sense of security for women to be involved in politics so that women's participation rates were expected to increase. This article examines the implementation of Womenomics on women's participation in Japanese domestic politics from 2013 to 2020. It employs the qualitative approach and uses liberal feminism theory as its analytical framework. The data used in this study were secondarily obtained from various sources of books and publications by the Japanese government.

Abstract

This study examines spiritual resilience from a sociological standpoint and as a sort of immunization against stress during pandemic times. The Piedmont theory of the spiritual dimension was used in this study to address the question of how the mental health of the stay-at-home mother was impacted by spiritual resilience, and George Herbert Mead's theories of symbolic interactionism were used as an analytical tool to examine spiritual resistance from a sociological perspective. By gathering samples from household mothers in the Cirebon district, the study employs a qualitative descriptive method of case studies. The findings indicate that household mothers' mental health was significantly impacted by their spiritual endurance. By having spiritual resilience, household mothers could give positive meanings to their social thoughts and actions. This article attempts to make a significant contribution to the study of the role of household mothers in facing the challenges and stresses of pandemic times.

Abstract

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the world communities, including the interactions among governments. While some governments chose to conflict with others or overlooked the pandemic, the rest attempted to collaborate in addressing the new global threat. Cities in many countries were the most suffering regions due to the enormous virus-confirmed cases, deaths, and economic declines, intertwining with other urban issues. As the largest city in Southeast Asia and Indonesia, Jakarta could not avoid this unprecedented crisis. However, apart from the efforts to tackle the crisis at home, the city showed its international engagement in addressing the issue together with other world cities as its para-diplomacy. This article aimed to answer the driving factors that encouraged the city for such engagement. It employed the qualitative method with descriptive analysis and the city leadership theory proposed by Rapoport, Acuto and Grcheva. The article found that Jakarta’s international engagement in addressing the pandemic as the city leadership action was driven by the role of city leader, decentralization and global city networking, and the regional COVID-19 policies and internet representing three elements in the theory: actor, structures, and tools. It argues that cities within the global city networking have demonstrated their stronger role during the pandemic, providing opportunities for nation branding by regional initiatives in handling the pandemic in addition to state foreign policy. This study, then, contributes to the studies the city leadership in responding to global issues that merit attention among scholars.
