Abstract

This article looks at how to enhance women's resilience to natural disasters in Bantul, as women are frequently classified as vulnerable groups. It employs qualitative methodologies, utilizing a case study methodology. Data were generally collected through interviews with disaster management authorities and planning sources. Other data were gathered secondarily through library examination, which includes papers, mass media, and other related documents. The findings indicate that the Regional Disaster Management Agency of Bantul has taken positive strides in incorporating gender factors into disaster management strategy. This includes measures to promote women's participation in planning processes, identify special hazards for women, and strengthen women's disaster preparedness. With this discovery, BPBD of Bantul district supports women in the face of disasters by strengthening their capacity through disaster management training and education, as well as disaster planning, in the hope that women's groups can increase women's roles in protecting themselves. This study adds to our understanding of gender marginalization in disaster management and can be used by the government to build more effective policies and programs that involve women in long-term disaster response efforts and promote gender equality.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly transformed various aspects of interstate relations, including the practice of economic diplomacy. Traditional diplomatic methods, which relied heavily on direct interactions, have shifted toward digital approaches, including the use of social media. This research analyzes how the Indonesian government utilizes Instagram as a tool for economic diplomacy. The conceptual framework for this study is based on Kishan Rana’s three stages of economic diplomacy in developing countries: salesmanship, networking, and regulatory management (Rana, 2012). Employing a mixed-method approach that combines volume and thematic analysis, the study identifies several key findings. First, Indonesia’s economic diplomacy on Instagram is most active in Asia, with three accounts demonstrating the highest public engagement: the Indonesian embassies in South Korea, Kazakhstan, and Cambodia. In all cases, the involvement of private sectors, either within or in collaboration with the embassies, played a critical role. Second, an analysis of Instagram content patterns reveals that Indonesian representatives primarily focus on network-building activities, with minimal attention given to salesmanship and regulatory management. This indicates that the use of social media for economic diplomacy by Indonesian representatives remains largely an extension of Indonesia’s traditional diplomatic practices, which emphasize building and maintaining networks rather than pursuing broader economic objectives.

Abstract

This article examines the perceptions and decision-making processes regarding the concept of being childfree (choosing to live without children) among students at Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. This university provides a compelling case for study due to its mission of cultivating mentally, spiritually, and intellectually capable individuals. The emphasis on 'spirituality' highlights the expectation for UIN Bandung students to develop a strong understanding of religion, which influences decision-making, including on social and religious issues such as the childfree phenomenon. This study seeks to explore UIN Bandung students’ perceptions of the childfree phenomenon, identify the factors influencing these perceptions, and analyze their decision-making processes regarding childfree choices. Using a descriptive method with a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys and unstructured interviews. The findings reveal that the majority of UIN Bandung students perceive the concept of being childfree negatively. Factors influencing their perceptions include internal factors, such as personality traits (attitudes, interests, and experiences), and external factors, such as societal conditions. The study categorizes student decision-making into three groups: those who perceive childfree negatively and desire to have children, those who perceive childfree positively and choose to remain childfree, and those who perceive childfree positively but still desire to have children.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the ongoing debates surrounding France and Islam over the past decade, particularly the re-emergence of laïcité as a historical ideology rooted in the late 18th century. The research aims to examine how French citizens express their perspectives on issues related to Islam, Islamofobia, and Muslim identity through narratives on Twitter, and to analyze how the racialization and marginalization of laïcité are perceived comprehensively. Using tweet harvesting for data collection and analysis facilitated by MAXQDA, the study identifies key events in 2023 that sparked public discourse: the ban on the abaya in schools and the celebration of Hanukkah at the Presidential Palace. Analysis of tweet content reveals three primary groups of public opinion: feminists (notably in the context of the abaya), nationalists who advocate for laïcité, and neutral humanists who, while often critical, also challenge the racialization of political actions. In addition to the frequent use of offensive language and calls for the exclusion of Muslims opposing government policies, secondary sources indicate tangible forms of racialization in society. These findings highlight that many view the Muslim population as outsiders, despite being born and raised in France.

Abstract

This research conducts a constructivist analysis of Alexander Wendt's "three cultures of anarchy," using the case study of Qatar-Israel relations. It explores how Wendt's concept can be applied to examine the structure, roles, and cultural dynamics shaping the interactions between these two states through various phenomena and issues. The study reveals that the relationship between Qatar and Israel has experienced fluctuations. Initially, both countries shared a collective identity, facilitating interaction and problem-solving. However, shifts in domestic, regional, and international representations have rendered this identity less relevant over time. The research adopts qualitative methods and descriptive analysis, utilizing data from literature reviews, including books, journals, articles, and online sources. Grounded in a constructivist approach and Wendt's cultural theories, it examines international politics by identifying the evolution of cultural representations, logic, and internalization in state relationships. Findings indicate that the representations in Qatar-Israel relations are asymmetrical. While Israel perceives its friendship with Qatar as significant, Qatar’s influence in the relationship remains limited. This study underscores the role of identity, culture, and representation in shaping interstate dynamics and offers insights into the complexities of their interactions.

Abstract

The tradition of ngabuburit among teenagers has experienced significant transformation due to advancements in technology and the influence of popular culture. This study employs qualitative methods to (1) explore how teenagers interpret the ngabuburit tradition in the digital era, (2) identify the factors driving changes in its meaning, and (3) analyze the social impacts of these changes on teenagers' lives. Findings reveal that ngabuburit activities have shifted toward individualistic and consumerist tendencies, such as spending time in trendy locations and showcasing moments on social media, rather than fostering spirituality and togetherness. This study highlights the deep influence of digitalization on local traditions and underscores the challenges of preserving traditional values in an evolving cultural landscape.

Abstract

The growing influence of digital platforms has sparked debate over the ideal balance of sovereignty in regulating their operations. While digital sovereignty is essential for safeguarding against external influences, it also risks granting governments extensive control over citizens. Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Information (MoCI) Regulation No. 10 of 2021 (MR 10/2021), which governs private-sector Electronic System Organizers, exemplifies this tension. This article examines MR 10/2021’s rationale and impact on Indonesia’s digital society through thematic analysis of YouTube content and discussions with MoCI representatives. The findings reveal that the platform registration mandate reflects a state-centric view of digital sovereignty, emphasizing territorial authority and control. However, a disconnect emerges between the regulation’s stated objectives—such as promoting fair competition, protecting users, and mapping digital industry players—and its implementation. By equating digital platforms with traditional businesses, the regulation facilitates governmental access to electronic data and systems for monitoring, content removal, and law enforcement. To achieve its goals more effectively, the study advocates refining MR 10/2021 and introducing sector-specific policies tailored to the unique dynamics of digital platforms.
