Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze slang words in Crank II movie. The method used descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through watching the full movie, library and internet research. The first analysis of the research is about characteristics of slang that found in the movie, which is divided into: Creative, Vulgar, and Short Lived. Then the second analysis is about functions of slang in the movie and the third or the last is about expressed of slang in the movie, which include: Expressed Love, Disappointed, Shock, and Anger. The results of this research indicated that: (1) It would get and gain the knowledge about slang language through this research paper. (2) The writer suggests that studying about slang language is very interesting, the writer hopes by studying slang language will help the reader to increase new vocabulary about slang. It also hopes that the readers can understand the sociolinguistic of slang that may appear in the learning process (3) the writer hopes that this paper will be useful for all people who want to do research regarding slang.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the characterization of the main character in novel and movie of The Secret Garden. In this research, the writers use descriptive qualitative research with comparative study to analyze the characterization of the main character, Mary Lennox, in the novel and movie The Secret Garden. From the comparative analysis of the characterization of the main character in novel and movie The Secret Garden, it is found that, in the novel, the method that is used to reveal and develop Mary Lennox’s character is direct characterization, which is done through the appearance, the author, through the dialogue, and the action. Meanwhile, there are transformation of the characterization through some reduction and addition to the characterization of the main character. Beside the difference of the method of characterization used, it is also found that there are some differences of the representation of Mary Lennox’s character between the novel and the movie. Keywords: Characterization, Novel, Movie

Abstract

Saat ini, bahasa Inggris menjadi bahasa penting di dunia. Banyak orang menggunakan bahasa ini untuk berbagai displin ilmu. Bahasa Inggris tidak hanya untuk mereka saja, tetapi pula dengan memahami grammarnya (tata bahasanya). Dan, terkadang memahami grammar bahasa Inggris tidak mudah. Bagi mahasiswa bahasa Inggris menjadi sebuah keharusan. Ini untuk mengingatkan mereka dengan penggunaan dalam bahasa Inggris. Tata bahasa Inggris bagaikan tulang yang menguatkan dalam membuat kalimat, tanpanya tak berarti apa-apa. Tujuan dari analisis ini ialah menilai kecakapan pemahaman grammatika pada kelas bahasa Inggris semester dua di kampus. Penulis menggunakan Grammar Translation Method (GTM) untuk menilai kecakapan pemahaman grammatika, serta cara mereka mencari solusi dengan soal yang diberikan dosen, dan akan terlihat keterpahaman mereka. Hasil dari penelitian ini diharapkan menjadi referensi untuk peneliti berikutnya dalam mengalisis obyek kemampuan pemahaman tatabahasa mahasiswa.

Abstract

The aim of this Classroom Action Research is to increase students’learning motivation and students’ narative text writingskill, by using Think Pair Share and Picture and Picture. This research is conducted at class VIII-8SMP Negeri 1 Ciomas of Bogor regency in  Academic Year 2014-2015. The research is done by two cycles, each cycles consists of two actions. The deficiencies of the first cycle is reflected and improved in the second cycle. The goals’ criteria are  achieved in the second cycle, it means that the classroom management by using Think Pair Share and Picture and Picture has been succeeded, so the reasearch is stopped. Based on the result of the research, students’ enthusiasm in the first cycle, 92,36% increases to 96,005% in the second cycle, students' learning motivation,78% in the first cycle increases to 83.8% in the second cycle. Students’ narrative text writing skills in the first cycle,72%  increases to 81% in the second cycle. So it can be concluded that the result of the research showsthe classroom management by using Think Pair Share and Picture and Pictureis proved increasingenthusiasm, learning motivation and narrative text writing skill of the eighth grade of students’SMP Negeri 1 Ciomas of Bogor regency.  Keywords: Think Pair Share (TPS), Picture and Picture (PP) , learning motivation, writing skill.

Abstract

Abstract - The goal of this research is to get data about the effect of motivation and perception to learning style in together to achievement of learning at Junior High School in Pamulang Tangerang Selatan. This research uses research method with correlation and regration analysis. It is mean, making connection  between data that tells about motivation and preception to learning style in together to learning achievment.The data about motivation and perception to learning style in together to learning achievment could be got over questioner by resercher with measuring something that has connection to: (1) there are effects of learning motivation signficantly and perception to learning style of studetns in together to achievment of learning. It can be known from the getting score of Fo=9,109 and Sig.0,000 < 0,05. In together, the variable of learning motivation and perception to learning style of students gave contribution 24,2% to the variable of learning achievment in english. (2) There are effects of learning motivation significantly to English learning achievment. It can be known from the getting score of thitung =2,214 and Sig. 0,031 < 0,05. The variable of learning motivation contrbuted 12,67% in increasing English learning achievment. (3) There are effects of perception to studetns learning style to students learning achievment significantly. It can be known by the getting score of thitung = 2,061 and Sig. 0,044 < 0,05. The variable of perception to studetns learning style contributed 11,53% in increasing English Learning achievment. It tells us that there are possitive effects and significant to learning motivation and perception in learning style to student learning achievment.

Abstract

Novel "Hijrah Bang Tatato" by Fahd Pahdepi is a novel based on the true story of the main character, Lalan or Bang Tattoo who experienced the inner struggle to migrate from the dark as a thug to a better and obedient man. As a former thug, Bang Tato as the main character in the novel "Hijrah Bang Tattoo" experienced several phases of life that made him migrate. The phases are experienced by implementing the values of humanity in accordance with the religion it embraces, namely Islam. The meaning of humanity's values of the main character consists of guidance, endeavor, and go home. Therefore, the humanitarian values of the main characters are used as the background of the discussion and the title of this article. The method used is descriptive with the approach of sociology of literature and the meaning of human values itself. The data are examined based on the meaning of the text in the novel by using literature study data collection. Thus, the result is an understanding of the meaning of humanity values of the main characters can be used as a reflection for their readers as a reflection of social reality in society, especially in Indonesia.Key Word : the values of humanity, meaning, the main character, the sociology of literature.

Abstract

Abstract : This research is a kind of survey and aims to find out and analyze empirically the effects of student’s perception on role play and students’ learning motivation on speaking skills. The observed population of this research is IX grade students of  State Junior High School, North Jakarta, which total of 195 students on six classes (9-1, 9-2, 9-3, 9-4, 9-5, 9-6). While the samples are 66 students which are divided evenly 11 students per class. The collection of the data is done by questionnaire and objective test for independent and dependent variables. The gained data was then analyzed by using correlation technique and double linier regression. The result of this research are: 1)There is a significant effect of student’s perception on role play method and learning motivation jointly on student’s speaking skill, based on the ANOVA table, the sig. value revealed is 0.000 which is lower than 0.05. Since sig. value < 0.05; 2) There is a significant effect of student’s perception on role play method on students’ speaking skill, since t value > t (2.999 > 1.998); 3) There is a significant effect of learning motivation on students’ speaking skill, since t value > t (5.119> 1.998). The findings of the research shows that all indicators for student’s perception on role play, motivation and speaking skill variables are valid and reliable. The mean scores show that the students felt Agree to the Roleplay, and felt Strongly Agree both to the Motivation and Speaking Skill, which can be concluded that the students are showing positive respond to Role Play and Strong Positive responds on Motivation and Speaking Skill.The hypothesis testing revealed that Role play method and motivation has significant partial and simultaneous effect on students’ speaking skill. Role play facilitate students to communicate and understand what they are communicating and what the other are saying. The motivation of the students encourage the student to intensively engaged in English language by communicating-speaking and listening as well to provide feedback based on the partners’ oral communication, thus enhance speaking skill.

Abstract

This research is aimed at finding the procedures and method of three bilingual storybooks. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with content analysis. Based on the theory of Newmark about translation method and procedures, it is found that the frequently used procedures are literal, modulation, shift, addition and reduction. The translation on the first book indicated that the translator uses shift modulation, couplet, cultural equivalent, addition. In the second book, the procedures used are literal, addition, modulation, reduction, transference, expansion and couplet. Whilst, in the third book, there couplet, literal, addition, reduction, modulation, cultural equivalent, shift, synonymy, expansion procedures are found. On the other hand, the most dominant procedure used is literal and the translation method used is semantic translation. The method shows the translation orientation of the translators.

Abstract

Grammar is central to the teaching and learning of languages. Grammar helps us in several phenomena.For example, if we want to translate sentence or paragraph into English, we need grammar in order to the meaning is clear and easy to understand. Grammar is often taught and learnt by every grade or level at a school or a course. Grammar is also one of difficult aspects of language to teach well. Because of that, the teacher must have the solution. Teacher has a significant role for this case because he or she is one of mediator of students getting knowledge. Teachers must have some good techniques for teaching grammar especially past tense, for example discussion. A research to know the effectiveness of teaching English Past Tense trough Discussion technique hasbeen conducted at the third grade of SD Pelita Insani Bogor. The data were collected through observation, intreview, teaching-learning process, pre-test and post-test. The implementation of technique was the students had to discuss about past tense material which has been prepared by the teacher in a group. Discussion technique makes the students share their knowledge with their friends. Using discussion can make the third grade students in SD Pelita Insani Bogor more easily understanding and using past tense correctly. The students of Pelita Insani also can do the post-test which is a mean to evaluate the technique and teaching-learning process well and become more active in the teaching-learning process. The result of the post-test showed that teaching English pasttense through discussion technique is one of good solution to improve the Pelita Insani’s students’ comprehend about past tense.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether there is an influence of Role Play on students’ ability in speaking English. The population in this research was the entire first grade students of SMK USWATUN HASANAH JAKARTA, consist of 60 students divided into 2 classes and the sampling method is Random Sampling, the sample consist of one class with 30 students. The result of Role Play and instrument of the test of speaking consist of 30 items that have been analyzed through validity test using construct validity, reliability test using KR-21, discrimination index and difficulty index analysis. The normality of X variable r-count is = 0.111 which less than r-table is = 0.161, the normality of Y variable r-count is = 0.066 which less than r-table is = 0.161. So that the hypothesis Ho is accepted, it means that the population of the result is normal. The result of data analysis through ANOVA table got r-count is = 5.96 which is more than r-table is = 4.01. The reliability of X variable r-count is = 0.848 which is more than r-table is = 0.361, the reliability Y variable r-count is = 0.885 which is more than r-table is = 0.361. The normality of X variable rcountis = 0.111 which less than r-table is = 0.161, the normality of Y variable r-count is = 0.066 which less than r-table is = 0.161. So, that the hypothesis Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is an influence of Role Play on students’ ability in speaking English.
