Abstract

Front wheel alignment and tire pressure are important factors affecting vehicle stability, comfort, and driving safety during operation. This study aimed to analyze the effect of toe angle adjustment and tire pressure variation on side slip test results in the Isuzu NLR 55B LX microbus. The research employed an experimental method conducted at the Motor Vehicle Testing Unit of the Department of Transportation of Magelang City using an HPA side slip tester manufactured in 2004. The experimental variables consisted of three toe angle variations (-0°25′, +0°15′, and +0°25′) and three tire pressure variations (35, 50, and 65 psi), while the front wheel deviation data were analyzed descriptively and comparatively. The results showed that non-standard toe angle and tire pressure settings produced side slip values exceeding the allowable roadworthiness threshold of ±5 mm/m, with the highest deviation reaching -14.7 mm/m under low tire pressure and below-standard toe angle conditions. In contrast, the standard toe angle setting (+0°15′) with a tire pressure of 50 psi produced a side slip value of 3.6 mm/m, which remained within the acceptable threshold. Both under-inflated and over-inflated tire conditions were found to increase wheel deviation due to changes in tire-road contact characteristics. This study confirms that proper toe angle adjustment and tire pressure settings play an important role in maintaining vehicle stability, improving driving safety, and extending tire service life.

Abstract

Effective preventive maintenance is essential for maintaining machine availability and improving productivity in manufacturing industries. This study aims to analyze preventive maintenance scheduling strategies for multiple components within a single machine and evaluate their impact on downtime and production capacity in rotary kiln machines used in the ceramic tile industry. A quantitative approach was employed using four rotary kiln machines in a ceramic tile manufacturing company located in Gresik, East Java, Indonesia. The analysis was conducted by developing a cost-based model that compares separate and grouped maintenance schedules based on optimal maintenance intervals, opportunity costs, schedule shifting costs, and component failure risks. The results indicate that the optimal maintenance strategy varies among machines. For Kiln IA, Kiln IB, and Kiln IIB, separate maintenance scheduling for each component resulted in lower total maintenance costs, whereas for Kiln IIA, grouping the maintenance schedules of the roll, bearing, and burner produced the minimum total cost of IDR 18,640,607. These findings suggest that grouped maintenance is feasible when the optimal maintenance intervals of different components are relatively close, thereby reducing the frequency of machine downtime. The proposed preventive maintenance schedules also reduced annual downtime by 28.62–77.02%, with the highest efficiency achieved by Kiln IIA at 77.02%. The study demonstrates that the effectiveness of grouped maintenance scheduling is strongly influenced by the proximity of optimal maintenance intervals and the balance between opportunity costs and schedule shifting costs. Therefore, an integrated cost-based preventive maintenance scheduling approach can serve as a decision-making tool for improving machine availability and production capacity.

Abstract

Teak sawdust biomass has potential as a solid fuel; however, its high ash and inorganic mineral contents adversely affect its fuel quality and thermal performance. Previous studies on biomass leaching generally evaluated process effectiveness solely based on mass loss after leaching, so the relationship between mass reduction and the actual decrease in ash content has not been fully verified. Therefore, this study emphasizes the verification of ash reduction through proximate analysis as a more representative indicator of biomass quality, while also evaluating its effect on improving calorific value. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of leaching using deionized water and 1 M HCl in reducing ash content and increasing calorific value. The experiment was conducted using solid-to-liquid ratios of 1:25, 1:50, and 1:75, with 2 h of stirring, drying at 105 °C, followed by proximate and calorific value analyses. The results showed that leaching with 1 M HCl effectively reduced the ash content by 30%, from 2.013% in the raw biomass to 1.402%, whereas leaching with deionized water did not result in a significant reduction in ash content. In addition, the calorific value increased by 1.078 MJ/kg, from 17.629 MJ/kg in the raw biomass to 18.707 MJ/kg after leaching with 1 M HCl. Overall, 1 M HCl exhibited superior demineralization performance compared to deionized water. These findings indicate that acid leaching significantly improves fuel quality by reducing inorganic mineral content and increasing energy density.

Abstract

The utilization of log residue waste as an alternative raw material in the wood processing industry has the potential to improve resource efficiency; however, material heterogeneity often leads to product quality issues. This study aims to identify the dominant types of defects and their contributing factors in wooden cable pallets made from log residue waste, as well as to determine quality improvement priorities through the integration of Seven Tools of Quality and Quality Function Deployment (QFD). The study was conducted at UD Nurari Perdana Kabelindo, Sidoarjo, using production and defect data collected during September 2025 through observations, interviews, documentation, and questionnaires. The Seven Tools analysis employed check sheets, Pareto charts, and cause-and-effect diagrams to identify dominant defects and their root causes. The results were subsequently integrated into QFD through the development of a House of Quality to translate customer needs into priority technical characteristics. Customer requirements were determined based on product quality attributes obtained from 30 customer respondents using a census method. The results showed a defect rate of 11.51% of total production, with the dominant defects consisting of thickness deviation, wavy surfaces, knot defects, and asymmetrical circular shapes. The QFD analysis revealed that operator precision and raw material selection were the top priorities for quality improvement. These findings demonstrate that the integration of Seven Tools and QFD is effective in linking process defect analysis with customer needs to support sustainable product quality control.

Abstract

In manufacturing industries utilizing the injection molding process, the reliability of production machinery is a critical factor influencing production performance, product quality, and operational efficiency. Machine component failures, particularly in the screw, can lead to downtime, reduced productivity, and increased maintenance and production costs. Therefore, an analysis of component wear and service life is essential to support the implementation of effective maintenance strategies. This study aims to analyze the wear rate and service life of screws used in injection molding machines at PT XYZ. The investigation focuses on the effect of processing polyamide (PA9T) plastic material and compares the performance of coated and uncoated screws in terms of component durability. The research methodology includes direct observation of a Fanuc Roboshot α-S150 injection molding machine, wear analysis, and service life estimation using the Archard Wear Law approach. The results indicate that the coated screw has an actual service life of approximately 650,000 shots, whereas the uncoated screw has a service life of approximately 600,000 shots. Thus, the use of a coated screw increases component service life by 8.33% compared to an uncoated screw. These findings suggest that surface coating enhances screw resistance to wear mechanisms occurring during the processing of polyamide (PA9T) material. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that wear analysis can contribute to improved productivity through the implementation of regular and effective machine maintenance practices.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of different types of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) on the growth and yield of bird's eye chili (Capsicum frutescens L.). Chili productivity is often constrained by the low availability of phosphorus (P), highlighting the need for biofertilizers that enhance nutrient uptake efficiency. The study was conducted from April to July 2025 at the Suka Tani Sejahtera Coffee Plantation Business Research Center, Bireuen, Aceh. A non-factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) was employed with four treatments and three replications, consisting of a control, Glomus sp., Acaulospora sp., and a combination of Glomus sp. + Acaulospora sp. The observed parameters included plant height, number of leaves, number of fruits, fruit weight, fresh shoot biomass, fresh root biomass, root length, and percentage of AMF root colonization. The results showed that AMF application produced different responses among the observed parameters. AMF application had no significant effect on plant height, number of leaves, or fresh shoot biomass, but significantly affected fruit weight, fresh root biomass, and root length. The Glomus sp. treatment produced the highest fresh root biomass (45 g), whereas Acaulospora sp. resulted in the highest number of fruits (350 fruits) and fruit weight (238.67 g). The combined AMF treatment produced the highest fresh shoot biomass (160.67 g), although it did not exhibit a better synergistic effect than the single-species treatments. The highest root colonization reached 48–50% at an application rate of 15 g per plant. In conclusion, Glomus sp. was more effective in promoting root system development, whereas Acaulospora sp. was more effective in improving the generative yield of bird's eye chili.

Abstract

Rice husk waste is an abundant agricultural residue with potential as a raw material for bio-based materials. This study aimed to develop an active bio-based film from rice husk cellulose incorporated with papaya seed extract and zinc oxide (ZnO) and to evaluate its physical characteristics, water absorption, biodegradability, and antibacterial activity. A laboratory experimental design was employed using four formulations (F1–F4) with varying concentrations of papaya seed extract (0.97–6.25%) and ZnO (0.97–3.57%). The data were analyzed descriptively based on the characterization results of each formulation. The results showed that all formulations produced bio-based films with a uniform pale-yellow appearance, relatively smooth surfaces, and no visible cracks or air bubbles. The pH values ranged from 6 to 7, while water absorption after a 14-day test ranged from 40% to 50%. The biodegradability test showed that F1, F2, and F4 achieved 100% degradation within 24 hours, whereas F3 showed 89% degradation. Based on a descriptive comparison of the evaluated characteristics, F4 was selected for antibacterial testing because it showed a favorable combination of properties. F4 produced an inhibition zone of 13.5 ± 0.62 mm against Escherichia coli, which was classified as strong antibacterial activity. These findings indicate that the rice husk cellulose-based film incorporating papaya seed extract and ZnO has potential for development as a biodegradable active packaging material.

Abstract

The use of household water tanks is typically limited to storing water pumped from wells, though positioning a tank at height can generate alternative energy as water flows out. The contribution of flow rate, head, and water pressure offers an opportunity for water flow technology to convert this energy into small-scale electricity. This study aims to analyze the effect of the placement point of water flow technology on the electrical energy generated, examined through flow rate, head, and water pressure, to determine the optimal placement configuration. A descriptive-experimental method was employed with three independent variables (measurement point position, water tank capacity, and pipe diameter) resulting in eight combinations of measurement variations. The dependent variables measured were flow rate, water pressure, and generator voltage, with each measurement repeated three times for 60 seconds. Results showed that the optimal voltage of 25 VAC was achieved using a ½-in pipe diameter, a water tank positioned 4 m above ground level, and the water flow technology placed 50 cm above ground level. This voltage can be used for emergency LED lighting or, with an energy storage component and DC conversion, as a household power bank.

Abstract

Cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) is an important horticultural crop whose productivity is strongly influenced by soil fertility and nutrient availability. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of organic matter application on the growth and yield of cayenne pepper and to determine the most effective application rate. The experiment was conducted using a non-factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) with one factor consisting of four organic matter rates: control (without organic matter), 25 g, 50 g, and 75 g per plant. Observed variables included plant height, number of fruits, fruit weight, and root length. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the Honest Significant Difference (HSD) test at the 5% significance level. The results showed that organic matter application had no significant effect on plant height at 15 and 45 days after planting (DAP), but significantly affected plant height at 30 DAP. The 25 g treatment produced the highest plant height at 30 DAP (47.69 cm), the highest number of fruits (185.06 fruits per plant), and the highest fruit weight (159.19 g per plant). Meanwhile, the longest root length was obtained from the 50 g treatment (19.50 cm). In general, the application of organic matter improved plant growth and yield compared with the control treatment. Based on all observed parameters, the application rate of 25 g per plant was the most effective treatment, providing the best overall response in the growth and productivity of cayenne pepper

Abstract

This workplace case study evaluated sanding postures at CV XYZ using Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) and the Nordic Body Map (NBM). The two workers included represented the operational personnel assigned to the sanding station during the observation period. Both workers performed prolonged bending and squatting postures. NBM scores identified the upper neck, back, and waist as the areas with the highest discomfort, while the initial REBA score was 8, indicating high risk. A standing posture and an anthropometry-based workbench were then developed and simulated in EasyPose. The simulated posture produced a REBA score of 3, or low risk. The recalculated workbench dimensions were 95 cm in height, 70 cm in width, and 161 cm in length. These findings indicate a potential reduction in postural risk, but they do not constitute field validation. Implementation and repeated REBA and NBM measurements are therefore required to confirm changes in discomfort, usability, and work performance.
