Abstract

Indonesia Kaya, initiated by a cigarette company, uploaded a batik-themed film in 2018 on the IndonesiaKaya YouTube account. The author sees indications that there is a construction of a positive image of a cigarette company through the representation presented in the film, so the purpose of this study is to reveal how the positive image of a cigarette company is displayed in a batik-themed film. The research method used is a qualitative method with representation by Stuart Hall as its main analysis tool. The result is a positive image of a cigarette company displayed in a batik-themed film through the representation presented in the film, namely Intentional Representation and Constructionist Representation. The positive image that appears in the scene in the film is that the existence of a cigarette company is no longer in doubt and is a local product that has been attached to the Indonesian nation; the cigarette company has preserved traditional products; the cigarette company has a winding journey story until now it has succeeded; the cigarette company cares about the environment, culture, and the Indonesian nation; inspiration for all cigarette factories; and is used as a role model for other cigarette factories because of its success. In this case, batik is positioned as a commodity that can generate profit for cigarette companies, namely by constructing a positive image of cigarette companies. Not only commodifying batik, but as a product of a media, in the film there is also commodification of content, audience, and labor.

Abstract

Scavenging has been the object of scientific and academic research based on various scientific viewpoints worldwide. Still, the issue of the double burden that is experienced by women scavengers and its impact on gender inequality and women's productivity has received less attention. This research aims to explore further the effects of double burden or dual responsibility burdened by women scavengers in Komunitas Pemulung Pasir Panjang Kota Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), to gender inequality and the productivity of women scavengers in that community. This research employed a qualitative approach including field observation and in-depth interviews. This research has found that the phenomena of double burden does not liberate women scavengers from the patriarchal chain that binds and restrains them, but instead makes them increasingly dependent on men in the economic and financial dimension of household life. In addition, they are caught in a dilemma between maximizing the option of working outside the home or taking care of their domestic work. As a consequence of the long-standing and strong internalization of a false awareness about women's natural duties, those women scavengers do not think of this as an injustice but rather an obligation that must be carried out properly and consistently.

Abstract

This study aims to see the contribution of emotional regulation and resilience experienced by middle-aged adults as a sandwich generation who care for parents and children. The condition as a sandwich generation generally feels physically, mentally, and financially exhausted because they often face challenges and pressures as caregivers. In the same situation, this individual must also balance the demands of his own family, including raising children, with the responsibility of providing physical, emotional, and financial support to his elderly parents. This study uses a quantitative method. The population involved were middle-aged adults who were sandwich generation in Perawang Barat Village, Tualang District using convenience sampling techniques, participants consisting of 54 respondents. The measuring instrument used was the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) from Radde et al. (2021) which is based on the dimensions of Gross & John (2003). Meanwhile, the resilience scale uses a theory based on Grotberg's aspects. The results of the study showed that the level of emotional regulation and resilience of middle-aged adults in the sandwich generation in Perawang Barat Village was at a moderate level. In addition, there is a positive and significant relationship between emotional regulation and resilience. The findings of this study can be used by individuals, parents, and psychologists to improve their ability to regulate emotions, so that they are resilient in facing problems as a sandwich generation.

Abstract

This study focuses on the current problems and challenges encountered in conserving heritage sites in the province of Quezon. Likewise, it aimed to determine the consensus regarding practices and strategies for conserving said heritage sites. This quantitative research obtained data from 50 respondents from LGU offices in charge of maintaining heritage sites and representatives from the provincial tourism office. Said respondents confirmed that environmental factors such as calamities and climate change take the worst toll on the heritage sites, exacerbated by a seemingly permanent lack of funding and trained and stable workforce, which can be traced to the inadequacy of public awareness and support. In response, public education was deemed a top priority; suggestions were made to include heritage conservation in school curricula and to conduct aggressive social media campaigns. Cost management also received emphasis in terms of sustainable and cost-effective preservation strategies, such as the use of alternative restoration materials, innovative techniques, and collaboration. Involving community members is seen as sustainable and mutually beneficial in terms of employment generation and boosting the LGU economy.

Abstract

Early family dynamics and upbringing play a vital role in shaping adult relationship patterns. Childhood experiences—such as emotional climate, communication styles, and parental interactions—can significantly influence how individuals develop trust, manage emotions, and resolve conflicts later in life. This study employed a descriptive survey design to examine how these early influences affect adult relationships among 101 participants aged 18 and above in Anambra State, Nigeria. A stratified random sampling method ensured representation across age and gender. Data were collected through the validated Family Dynamics and Adult Relationship Patterns Scale (FDARPS), using a 4-point Likert scale (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.77). Findings revealed that parenting style (M = 3.02), sibling relationships (M = 2.65), and childhood attachment (M = 2.52) significantly shaped adult interpersonal styles, while early interactions and family stability had less impact. Positive upbringing elements—such as parental support (M = 2.97), role models (M = 2.87), and early encouragement (M = 2.88)—fostered healthy relationships, whereas open communication (M = 1.77) was less influential. Common adaptive strategies among those with dysfunctional family backgrounds included mindfulness (M = 3.08), support groups (M = 3.06), and therapy (M = 3.01). ANOVA results indicated significant effects of age and age-gender interactions, but not gender alone. The study concludes that early family experiences significantly shape adult relational outcomes. It recommends that families, educators, and counselors emphasize emotional support, healthy communication, and positive role modeling to nurture stronger future relationships.

Abstract

In Bunutin Village's indigenous community, adolescents (16-17 years old) begin to understand and adopt gender roles by participating in the Neduh ritual (water marriage), performed annually during the third month of the Balinese lunar calendar. This research explored three key aspects: the ritual's philosophical and educational values, the specific gender roles it transmits, and the benefits the community gains from these roles. This descriptive qualitative study used a participatory ethnographic approach. Data was gathered through direct participant observation, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), interviews, and literature reviews. The findings show: 1) The Neduh ceremony holds profound educational value, symbolizing the union of masculine and feminine principles (muani and luh), fundamental to life's origin and fertility. 2) Inherited gender roles involve distinct responsibilities for males and females within the local socio-cultural context. 3) The community benefits from these roles by establishing a harmonious and complementary social order between men and women. Ultimately, the Neduh ritual prepares adolescents for their adult gender roles.

Abstract

Urban communities tend to reason about the choice of quality education. The research aims to analyse the community's rational choices regarding the quality of madrasas and determine the perception of benchmarking of madrasah accreditation in Serang City. The research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach at Madrasah Aliyah, Serang City. Data collection was done through interviews with informants from madrasah managers, parents of students, and madrasah supervisors, and data analysis was done using descriptive and triangulation techniques. The study results found that the rational choice of urban communities for the quality of madrassas in Serang City was influenced by academic, social, and cultural factors. The sensible choice lies in the superiority of religious education, but it offers quality public education as a holistic option, encompassing academic, moral, and spiritual dimensions. Public perception is influenced by the ability of madrasas to meet the criteria of the National Accreditation Board, which describes the strengths and weaknesses in improving the quality of education. The benchmarking process has a positive influence on enhancing the accreditation and quality of madrasas. The perception of the Head of the Madrasah regarding managerial changes and educational quality standards is an essential indicator for parents and supervisors to improve the quality of continuous education. The research implies that the more rational the choice of the quality of madrasah accreditation, the more it will increase the perception of benchmarking of Islamic educational institutions. This research is limited to Madrasah Aliyah Negeri in Serang City.

Abstract

Work-family conflict (WFC) is a common phenomenon experienced by women who undergo dual roles as workers and family members. This study aims to explore the experiences and contributing factors of WFC among married Muslim women who undertake dual responsibilities in work and family domains. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants in this study were ten Muslim women who were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive analysis technique. The results showed that participants experienced difficulties dividing time between work and family, psychological pressure due to high work demands, and the influence of work stress on family interactions. Despite facing the challenges of WFC, participants showed adaptation strategies, such as effective time management, separation of roles between work and family, and utilization of technology to support work and family life balance. Support from spouses and family also played an essential role in helping participants navigate their dual roles. In addition, the motivation to keep working is not only based on economic aspects but also on fulfilling psychological and social needs. This study provides insight into the dynamics of WFC in Muslim women as well as strategies that can be used to overcome these challenges.

Abstract

This study aims to trace the development of the gas factory in Bandung and its influence on the modernization of hygiene in the city of Bandung during the colonial period. Previous studies on colonial Bandung have rarely discussed hygiene or the gas factory. In addition, there has been no research linking the emergence of gas technology as a driver of improving food hygiene in the Dutch East Indies. Therefore, there needs to be a historical study that discusses gas technology with the setting of the place in colonial Bandung. The method used in this study is the historical method through four stages, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Historical data were obtained through tracing primary and secondary sources. The results of the study indicate that the background to the emergence of the gas factory in Bandung was driven by the scarcity of firewood and the colonial government's efforts to improve unhealthy food hygiene conditions. During its operation from 1921 to 1942, the gas factory became a provider of cooking fuel for the residents of Bandung. This study argues that the presence of the gas factory is correlated with improvements in food hygiene in the city of Bandung.
