Abstract

Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskribsi kualitatif dan menggunakan pendekatan analisis wacana kritis model Teun A. Van Dijk untuk menganalisis teks dalam podcast Deddy Corbuzier yang sudah ditranskrip. Sumber data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yakni podcast bersama Kak Seto dengan judul “Kita yang Bodoh atau Sekolah yang Bodoh?!” dengan durasi 47 menit 55 detik yang di unggah dalam channel youtube pada tanggal 4 April 2020. Pada podcast tersebut, membahas mengenai pendidikan di Indonesia. Hasil penelitian ini didapatkan elemen-elemen dalam wacana seperti struktur makro (tematik), superstruktur (pendahuluan, isi, penutup, dan simpulan), dan struktur mikro (latar, praanggapan, maksud, koherensi kondisional, metafora). Simpulan dari podcast ini adalah membahas mengenai sekolah yang masih menggunakan sistem pendidikan yang belum terbarui, Kak Seto selaku Ketua KPAI mendirikan Home Schooling bagi anak-anak yang kurang cocok dengan pendidikan formal maupun anak-anak yang tidak bisa mengenyam pendidikan, dan pernyataan-pernyataan Deddy mengenai sekolah dan kuliah menjadi bumbu yang khas dalam podcast tersebut.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research intends to untangle the particular issues related to Orientalism. East into Upper East by Ruth Praver Jabvala displays the conflicted culture which happens to Indians. The Characters tend to act as Upper Class in Western Manner. Jabvala illustrates the difficulties of being Indian who has to approach western culture then fall in term of Orientalism. Orientalism by Edward W. Said is used as a tool to analyze this book especially to find Latent and Manifest Orientalism. This research shows that conflicted culture which happens to the characters in Jabvala’s was effected by Post Colonialism. In short, Upper East was built by the colonist. This book describes the way Indian sees their culture as given by the West.Keywords: cultural identity, east, upper east, orientalism, and postcolonialism.

Abstract

Humor has been used as a tool against oppression for a long time. With the advent of digital technology, memes have a become popular object in social media, especially in Twitter platform. Meme is an images which are communicated through social media that make fun of bring to light a social or cultural issue. This research aims to explore a meme by ARMY and communication style that used through Twitter platform. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative research. This research was obtained the data by ARMY members on the direct message on Twitter. The result of this research showed that meme by ARMY members give a message which is implied, they use some of meme for entertain for themselves and they also support for their idol, BTS. In this meme, ARMY depicts an exaggerated expression of BTS members, where they are very fanatical about their idols, the communication style applied through memes also affects the response of their followers because these memes contain entertainment and always support BTS members. Therefore, virtual ethnography also can be a powerful methodology for understanding online social communities and subcultures, such as a popular and widespread medium for internet-based interactions

Abstract

Penelitian ini berfokus pada dua elemen penting dalam musik sampe’ yaitu bentuk estetik dalam penyajian dan bentuk estetik dalam lagu. Bentuk dan konsep estetik akan memberikan identitas sebuah aktualitas musik sehingga dapat dibedakan dari yang lainnya. Secara konseptual musik tradisional sampe’ memiliki dua bentuk, yaitu: 1) bentuk arsitektonik yang sifatnya intelektualistik atau absolut; 2) bentuk simbolik yang sifatnya instingtif atau relatif. Kedua bentuk tersebut dapat dicermati melalui sumber bunyi (instrumentasi), musikalitas, ekspresi musikal, dan tata penyajiannya. Selain itu konsep keindahan musik tradisional sampe’ dapat pula diamati secara ilmiah (science) yaitu menilai keindahan dengan perhitungan logis melalui standar-standar estetik yang telah ada dan melalui unsur filsafat tentang keindahan menyangkut berbagai wawasan keindahan yang dipersepsi oleh manusia. Melalui bentuk dan konsep estetik musik tersebut dapat membawa untuk mengenal lebih jauh dan membaca unsur penting dari kebudayaan masyarakat pemiliknya. Selanjutnya dengan memahami bentuk dan konsep estetik adalah awal yang baik dan akan menuntun seseorang yang ingin belajar tentang musik tradisional sampe’. Metode pada penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan pendekataan teori estetika yang dikemukaan oleh A.A. Made Djelantik dan Monroe Beardsley.Kata kunci : estetika, musik sampe’, dayak kenyah

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the types of commissive acts found in the movie entitled Onward as the data source. The utterances uttered by the characters in the movie were taken as the data of the research and classified them by using the theory of commissive acts proposed by Searle. This research is a descriptive qualitative research, as to describe the data in words and sentences. To collect the data, researchers conducted observational method and non-participatory technique. The researchers used the method of pragmatic identity to analyse the data and pragmatic competence – in equalizing technique to equalized the data based on the theory used. The research result showed that there were 17 utterances of commissive acts found in Onward movie. They were 2 data of promising, 4 data of threatening, 2 data of accepting, 6 data of refusing, and 2 data of offering. The act of refusal was the frequently used type of commissive acts since the character had the habit of not wanting to bother other people.

Abstract

This study is about a syntactic analysis on sentences in the song lyrics of Josh Groban by using tree diagram theory. Thus, the aims of this study are (1) To find out the types of the phrases used in Josh Groban song lyrics (2) To find out the sentence patterns used in Josh Groban song lyrics. The object of this study is Josh Groban song lyrics which entitled “You Raise Me Up”. The method of this study is qualitative analysis. The technique of collecting the data is by using 3 steps. The 3 steps are: (1) preparing and organizing, (2) coding, and (3) representing the data. Finally, the findings of this study are as follows; (1) there are 3 types of phrases, they are 7 Noun Phrase (NP), 9 adverbial phrases (AP), and 9 verb phrases (VP). (2) There are 3 sentence patterns in Josh Groban song lyrics, they are; (1) S = N+VP (2) S1+Conj.+S2 (S1 = N+V, S2 = N+VP) (3) S1+Conj.+S2 (S1 = N+VP, S2 = N+VP)

Abstract

The study aims at analyzing the types of address terms used by all the characters in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them movie and revealing the factors that influence the use of address terms. Both employ the theory proposed by Wardhaugh (2006). Further, this study applies to qualitative design. The result of the study can be concluded as follows. The types of address terms used in the movie are first name, title plus last name, title alone, last name, pet name, and kinship terms. The use of address terms first name was commonly used to show intimacy between the speakers. There are various factors influencing the use of address terms. They are particular occasion, social status, gender, age, family relationship, occupational hierarchy, transactional status (i.e., service encounter, or doctor-patient relationship), race, and degree of intimacy. The social status or rank of others apparently the common factor influencing the use of address terms. It is because the characters are not familiar with each other even though they know each other. Some characters also show the clear differences between the superior and the inferior. Then, the circumstances and the social background of the characters determine the use of appropriate address terms.

Abstract

Fokus penelitian ini adalah analisis terhadap unsur stile yang meliputi unsur bunyi, leksikal, dan majas dalam tiga lirik lagu grup musik Fourtwnty. Metode yang dipilih adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan langkah kerja menganalisis unsur-unsur stile untuk menemukan stile dominan. Dari stile dominan tersebut akan disimpulkan stile khas gaya penciptaan lirik lagu grup musuk Fourtwnty. Tujuan akhir penlitian ini adalah menyimpulkan bagaimana stile khas tersebut berfungsi sebagai sarana capaian estetis. Hasil penelitian menemukan stile dominan grup musik Fourtwnty adalah dominasi manipulasi bunyi dalam bentuk asonansi dan mesodiplosis; kosa kata yang dipilih sederhana namun mampu merepresentasikan keresahan kehidupan kaum urban di era postmodernisme, penyampaian pesan didominasi oleh majas sehingga membuat lagu menjadi multitafsir dan tidak membosankan karena tidak sebatas menyampaikan doktrin atau dogma. Kemungkinan penafsiran melalui penggunaan simile, metafora dan personifikasi juga menjadikan karya ini selalu segar dan kontemplatif karena tidak menggurui atau terkesan menceramahi. Kemunculan “aku” dan “ku” di semua sampel lagu juga menciptakan efek estetis yang melahirkan suasana eksistensialis dimana pembaca atau pendengar merasa turut mengalami dan merasakan kegelisahan yang disampaikan.

Abstract

Critical thinking should be encouraged in English as a Foreign Language learning based on a scientific approach. The present study reviews arguments, opinions, and previous studies on the implementation of scientific approaches in English as a Foreign Language classes for improving student's critical thinking. The review reveals that critical thinking skills cover three aspects: quick thinking, creative thinking, and analytical thinking. To improve the students’ critical thinking, teachers play a crucial role in the learning process using innovative learning models based on scientific approaches. Three learning models considered most useful for developing students' critical thinking are discovery learning, problem-based learning, and project-based learning. Through discovery learning, students learn new things by solving the problem and exploring. In problem-based learning, a contextual problem is given at the beginning of the lesson, not the content being discussed. The third, project-based learning, students learn by doing and being enthusiastic with all processes of learning. Since critical thinking skills are crucial for solving language learning problems and beyond, language learning should integrate linguistic contents with the cognitive skills and dispositions, dimensions of critical thinking.

Abstract

The long-term goal of this research is Logistic English which is needed by maritime students, especially the port management study program, due to they have to master it, especially ESP (English for Special Purpose) Logistics. In addition, many alumni work for foreign shipping companies. This inspires the writer to conduct this research. The study entitled "The Influence of Logistic English Proficiency Towards Working Ability of Maritime University Alumni" was to determine how much influence the Logistics English skills possessed by maritime college students in Semarang. The method used in this study, for the population is maritime school students in Semarang, Indonesia, while the sample is using purposive sampling. This type of research uses causality. Meanwhile, for the instrument testing is the instrument validity test and the reliability test. The data collection techniques used questionnaires, observation, literature study, interviews and documentation. Data processing techniques using editing, scoring and tabulation. The data analysis technique uses multiple regression analysis test and goodness of fit test. While to test the data requirements using the normality test, linearity test and classical assumption test. The main finding in this study is that there is a relationship or influence of “Logistic English Proficiency Towards Working Ability of Maritime University Alumni”. Conclusion There is an influence between AKPELNI, STIMART AMNI, PIP and POLIMARIN, where the result has positive influence.
