Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi formulasi sediaan mouthwash serta aktivitas antibiofilm menggunakan bahan aktif ekstrak etanol daun Piper betle L. sebagai upaya pencegahan infeksi rongga mulut. Ekstraksi dilakukan dengan metode maserasi menggunakan pelarut etanol 96% terhadap 400 g simplisia kering dan diperoleh ekstrak kental sebanyak 28,75 g dengan rendemen sebesar 7,19%. Skrining aktivitas antibiofilm ekstrak terhadap Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, dan Lactobacillus acidophilus pada berbagai konsentrasi (0,125; 0,25; 0,5; 1; dan 2%) menunjukkan bahwa penghambatan biofilm tertinggi diperoleh pada konsentrasi 2% sebesar 65,94% terhadap Lactobacillus acidophilus.Formulasi sediaan mouthwash F1 (2%), F2 (1%), dan F3 (0,5%) yang dibuat menggunakan metode pencampuran sederhana menunjukkan hasil evaluasi organoleptik, pH, waktu alir, dan viskositas yang memenuhi kestabilan fisik dengan rentang pH 5,69–5,87, waktu alir 26,59–27,75 detik, serta viskositas 1,01–1,05 cP. Pada pengujian aktivitas antibiofilm, F1 menunjukkan aktivitas tertinggi dengan nilai MBIC sebesar 68,86% dan MBEC sebesar 31,36% terhadap Streptococcus mutans. Secara keseluruhan, formulasi sediaan mouthwash ekstrak etanol Piper betle L. menunjukkan potensi sebagai agen antibiofilm terhadap bakteri penyebab infeksi rongga mulut, terutama Streptococcus mutans.

Abstract

Jerawat merupakan gangguan kulit inflamasi yang disebabkan oleh kolonisasi bakteri seperti Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus, dan Staphylococcus epidermidis. Penggunaan antibiotik topikal secara terus-menerus dapat memicu resistensi, sehingga diperlukan alternatif alami yang aman dan efektif. Salah satu tanaman obat yang berpotensi adalah kulit batang salam (Syzygium polyanthum), yang diketahui mengandung senyawa aktif dengan efek antibakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi aktivitas antibakteri ekstrak etanol kulit batang salam terhadap bakteri penyebab jerawat. Ekstraksi dilakukan dengan metode maserasi menggunakan etanol 70%. Skrining fitokimia dilakukan dengan metode Kromatografi Lapis Tipis (KLT), sedangkan uji aktivitas antibakteri mencakup skrining bakteri, penentuan Konsentrasi Hambat Minimum (KHM) dan Konsentrasi Bunuh Minimum (KBM), serta uji difusi agar menggunakan cakram kertas. Hasil skrining fitokimia menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak positif mengandung alkaloid, flavonoid, steroid, dan fenolik. Aktivitas antibakteri yang signifikan diperoleh terhadap P. acnes, S. aureus, dan S. epidermidis dengan nilai KHM berturut-turut sebesar 0,4%; 0,8%; dan 0,2%, serta nilai KBM masing-masing sebesar 0,8%; 1,6%; dan 0,4%. Zona hambat terbesar diperoleh pada bakteri S. epidermidis. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak kulit batang salam memiliki potensi sebagai agen topikal antiacne dari bahan alam.

Abstract

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an additional supplement that acts as an antioxidant agent and plays an anti-aging role in the skin. One of the factors that can support the penetration of coenzyme Q10 into the skin is the use of the Nanostructured Lipid Carrier (NLC) system. Differences in the concentration of solid lipids used in the NLC system can play an important role in controlling drug release, so that topical use of Coenzyme Q10 can work optimally. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of solid lipid concentration on the stability of Nanostructured Lipid Carrier (NLC) containing active ingredient Coenzyme Q10. TIn this study, NLC were made in 3 formulas with different concentrations of cetyl palmitate as solid lipids, namely F1 10%; F2 11%; F3 12% and isopropyl palmitate as liquid lipid 3%. Several aspects such as organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, zeta potential and particle size on NLC will be measured both before and after the stability test. The stability test used in this study uses several methods including Centrifugation, Heat Shock and Freeze-Thaw. The data were analyzed using a paired t-test. In the organoleptic tests by centrifugation, heat shock, and Feeze-Thaw, the results showed that the three formulations were homogeneous, there was no phase separation, they were semi-solid, yellow in color, and odorless. The average pH value in the Feeze-Thaw stability test of F1, F2, and F3 varied between 5.08-5.31 (before) and 5.4-5.65 (after). The results showed that differences in the concentration of cetyl palmitate as a solid lipid had a significant effect on the physical stability of NLC coenzyme Q10 on particle size which showed significant differences (p <0.05), while the concentration of cetyl palmitate had no significant effect on the pH value, Spreadability and zeta potential which showed significant results (p>0.05)

Abstract

Anxiety disorder is one of the most common psychiatric conditions globally with a continuously increasing prevalence, necessitating the exploration of natural products as safer therapeutic alternatives. This study aimed to evaluate the anxiolytic activity of ethanol extract of Solanum torvum Sw. fruit in male BALB/c mice and to assess its effect on motor coordination function. Mice were divided into six groups (n=3 per group): normal control (distilled water), negative control (0.5% Na-CMC), positive control (Amitriptyline 25 mg/kg BW), and extract dose groups of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg BW. Phytochemical screening was conducted qualitatively, while anxiolytic activity was evaluated using the Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) with %OAE and %TSOA parameters, and the Open Field Test (OFT) with parameters of time spent in the center zone and center zone entries. Motor coordination function was assessed using the rotarod test with parameters of latency to fall and longest duration to stay, and data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA followed by Post Hoc Tukey test. Phytochemical screening results showed that the extract positively contained alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and terpenoids/steroids. EPM test results showed a significant increase in %OAE and %TSOA parameters in the 400 mg/kg BW dose group compared to the negative control (p < 0.05). In the OFT, the 400 mg/kg BW dose group showed an increase in time spent in the center zone (40.67 ± 4.73 seconds) and center zone entries (11.67 ± 1.53) which were not significantly different from the positive control Amitriptyline (p = 0.954). The rotarod test confirmed that all extract doses did not impair motor coordination, as indicated by no significant differences in latency to fall and longest duration to stay among treatment groups compared to the normal control (p > 0.05). In conclusion, the ethanol extract of Solanum torvum Sw. fruit at a dose of 400 mg/kg BW demonstrated anxiolytic activity equivalent to Amitriptyline without impairing motor coordination function, thus showing potential for development as a safe natural anxiolytic agent; however, further studies with larger sample sizes and biomarker measurements are needed to confirm the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Abstract

Red Ixora has been empirically used to treat scabies and gastritis. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of red Ixora flower extracts against test bacteria. Extraction was performed using sequential maceration with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol as solvents. Antibacterial activity was assessed through Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC), agar diffusion assay, and TLC-bioautography. Results showed MIC values of 0.5% for all three extracts, while MBC values were 1% for n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts and 0.5% for ethanol extract. Agar diffusion assays indicated the largest inhibition zones at 6% and 10%, respectively. TLC-bioautography of n-hexane extract with n-hexane:ethyl acetate (4:1) revealed active spots with Rf values of 0.72 and 0.63; 0.45; 0.27. Ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts with chloroform:methanol:water (15:3:1) showed active spots with Rf 0.78 and 0.61; Rf 0.69 for ethyl acetate, and Rf 0.89; 0.74; 0.61; 0.47 and Rf 0.72 for ethanol. Phytochemical analysis indicated potential presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, and terpenoids. These findings demonstrate that red Ixora flower extracts possess significant antibacterial activity against test bacteria, supporting their potential development as natural product-based pharmaceutical preparations.

Abstract

The high volume of services in hospital pharmacy installations is often not matched by the availability of adequate human resources, resulting in an imbalance in workload that affects service quality. This study aims to analyze pharmaceutical staffing needs based on actual workload using quantitative and qualitative approaches, and to identify the causes of excessive workload as a basis for developing recommendations for improving the work system. This study employed a mixed-methods approach with a descriptive, non-experimental observational design and a cross-sectional approach. Quantitative data were collected through direct observation using the work sampling method, as well as the calculation of Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) and Workload Indicators of Staffing Need (WISN). Qualitative data were obtained through in-depth interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), then analyzed using NVivo and a fishbone diagram. A total sampling technique was applied, involving the entire population of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians (TTK) in the Pharmacy Installation. Data analysis was conducted to determine workforce gaps, as well as barriers and root causes of workload. The results of the study show that the FTE analysis indicates that the overall workload is below capacity with some points of overload. The heaviest workload is in direct patient care. The WISN analysis shows the staffing requirement with a ratio value of 1.10, which means >1 indicates that the workforce is more than sufficient to meet the workload. Therefore, it is concluded that the FTE and WISN methods provide a consistent picture of pharmaceutical labor requirements and can be used in human resource planning in hospital pharmacy installations
