Abstract

Skin is the outer part of the body that is directly exposed to the environment, especially sunlight such as ultraviolet radiation. The skin basically has a defense against the negative effects of UV radiation of sunlight. Excessive sun exposure to the skin can cause skin damage that is acute (fast) and chronic (long). One of the ways used to prevent these negative effects is to use suncreen with a high SPF value. Syzygium aqueum and Muntingia calabura L. are plants that can be utilized as natural sunscreen active ingredients due to the content of polyphenolic compounds and high antioxidant activity values in their leaves. The purpose of this study was to determine the SPF value of ethanol extracts of Syzygium aqueum and Muntingia calabura L. and its protection category. Determination of SPF value was carried out by UV-VIS spectrophotometric method at UV B wavelength (290-320 nm), then the absorbance value obtained was calculated into the Mansur mathematical equation. Determination of sunscreen protection category based on SPF value refers to the provisions of the Food Drug Administrations (FDA). The results showed that the highest SPF value of Syzygium aqueum was obtained at a concentration of 1000 ppm, namely 46.183 with ultra protection category and the highest SPF value of Muntingia calabura L. at a concentration of 1500 ppm, namely 47.975 with ultra protection protection category. Based on these results, Syzygium aqueum and Muntingia calabura L. have the potential to be developed as sunscreen active ingredients with ultra protection category.

Abstract

Microbiology is the science that studies very small organisms, one of which is fungi. Fungi can grow and develop in a medium that contains sufficient nutrients. To identify the type of fungus, a growth medium is needed. Growth media is a substance consisting of a mixture of nutrients that support the growth of fungi, so it is necessary to make alternative media, one of which is using rice bran. The nutritional content of rice bran is 49.4 g carbohydrates, 24.7 g dietary fiber, 21.3 g fat, 16.5 g protein, 80 mg calcium, 2.1 grams phosphorus, 0.9 grams magnesium and 0.4 mg riboflavin vitamin. This research aims to determine the use of rice bran as a basic ingredient for alternative growth media for Aspergillus flavus. This type of research is an experiment by inoculating the Aspergillus flavus fungus using the Triple dot method. Observations were carried out for 7 days macroscopically by observing the diameter of the Aspergillus flavus fungus. The research results showed that there was an increase in colony diameter on rice bran media with concentrations of 8%, 10%, 12% and SDA media as a control of 29.3 mm, 33.0 mm, 33.8 mm and 34.9 mm. The effective concentration for the growth of the fungus Aspergillus flavus is a concentration of 12%. Based on the test results, it can be concluded that alternative media made from rice bran can be used as a growth medium for the fungus Aspergillus flavus.

Abstract

Kintamani Siam orange (Citrus nobilis L.) is the most dominant orange and has been successfully cultivated in Bali. Kintamani Siam orange peel can be used as a source of natural antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances needed by the body to neutralize free radicals and prevent damage caused by free radicals. This study aims to determine the comparison of antioxidant activity in 70% ethanol extract of Kintamani Siam orange peel through optimization of extraction methods: soxhletation and digestion, then optimizing the lotion formula with 3 comparisons of extract concentrations (2.5%, 5%, 7.5%). The next stage is to compare the physical and chemical properties of the lotion and the antioxidant activity it has. Based on the antioxidant activity test of 70% ethanol extract of Kintamani Siam orange peel, it shows that the extract from the digestion extraction results has antioxidant activity with a strong category. Then the test of the lotion: organoleptic tests, adhesion, spreadability, pH, and viscosity of the lotion preparation, showed that all formulas met all preparation requirements. Meanwhile, for the antioxidant activity test, the results showed that the lotion formula 3 preparation had the highest antioxidant activity with an IC50 of 138.52, which is in the medium category. It can be concluded that the lotion formula 3 preparation is the most optimal formula after the extract is formulated in the form of a antioxidant lotion.

Abstract

Endophytic fungi are microorganisms that reside within plant tissues and are known to produce secondary metabolites with antibacterial potential. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the fermented extract of the endophytic fungal isolate IFAZ-6, derived from the roots of Ziziphus mauritiana Lam. (bidara), against Streptococcus mutans. The isolate was fermented for 21 days and extracted using ethyl acetate. The extract was tested for antibacterial activity using Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) at concentrations ranging from 0.2% to 25.6%, Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) from 3.2% to 25.6%, and agar diffusion assay at concentrations of 8%, 12%, and 16%. Inhibition zone diameters were analyzed statistically using the Kruskal–Wallis test followed by the Mann–Whitney post hoc test to assess differences between concentration groups. The results showed an MIC value of 3.2% and an MBC of 6.4%. The agar diffusion assay revealed a maximum inhibition zone diameter of 9.86 mm at 16% concentration, with statistically significant differences between concentrations (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that the fermented extract of IFAZ-6 possesses antibacterial activity against S. mutans, although its efficacy remains lower than that of the positive control, chloramphenicol

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistent hyperglycaemia due to ineffective insulin use. In Indonesia, DM is a leading non-communicable disease. Medication adherence plays a critical role in managing DM, yet barriers such as long treatment regimens and limited patient-provider communication often hinder adherence. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a video-based digital intervention in improving medication adherence among DM patients at Public Health Center of Pasar Simpang in Kota Agung Timur, Tanggamus Regency. The study employed a cross-sectional design with 62 respondents divided into control and experimental groups. The intervention involved educational videos shared via WhatsApp. Adherence was assessed using the MMAS-8 (Morisky Medication Adherence Scale). Results revealed that adherence levels significantly improved in the experimental group post-intervention. The pre-test MMAS-8 mean score was 11.23±1.26, increasing to 13.97±1.33 post-intervention, with a mean difference of 2.74 (p = 0.000). In contrast, the control group showed no significant change, with pre- and post-test mean scores of 12.55±1.55 and 12.90±1.42, respectively (p = 0.315). Overall, 79% of respondents demonstrated good adherence, with significant improvements noted in the intervention group. These findings highlight the potential of video-based digital interventions in enhancing adherence among DM patients, providing valuable insights into diabetes care.
