Abstract

Central obesity is one of the public health problems in developing countries. This study aims to analyze the dynamic risk factors for central obesity in adults. This study used secondary data "Cohort Study of Non-Communicable Diseases Risk Factors" observing period for six years. The study design was a prospective cohort. The subjects were all household members aged 25 years and above with the criteria remaining in the study area, healthy, non-physically disabled, non-pregnant, having normal abdominal circumference (male ≤ 90 cm and female ≤80 cm) on baseline study, not suffering from non-communicable diseases (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cancer, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) at the baseline of the study, and completeness of the data. The number of subjects at the baseline of the study were 1510, consisting of 613 men and 897 women. The results showed that a cumulative incidence of central obesity during the 6-year observation period of 837 (55.4%). Multivariate cox regression analysis showed that the risk factors for central obesity in adults were gender, age group, marital status, and physical activity. This study concluded that female subjects with physical inactivity had more central obesity compared to male subjects with physical inactivity.

Abstract

Food consumption is one of the vital things that can determine the nutritional status of children. One indicator of the dietary quality of children is dietary diversity. This analysis was carried out to analyze dietary diversity and its relationship to the nutritional status of under-five children in Indonesia. The analysis was carried out on the data of the Individual Food Consumption Survey (IFCS). A total of 5,395 children were sampled in this analysis. Food consumption was collected through 24hr recall. The dependent variable in this analysis is the nutritional status of children (weight for age). The main independent variable is dietary diversity. The results of the analysis show that the types of food consumed most by children under five in Indonesia are cereals, roots, and tubers while the types of food groups that are the least consumed are fruits and nuts. The results of the analysis also show that the higher the age, mother's education and the economic level, the more diverse the consumption of food. The diversity of consumption is also higher for children in urban areas. The results of the analysis show that the diversity of food consumed by infants is related to nutritional status. Less diverse consumption mainly increases the risk of children experiencing severe underweight, even though this relationship is weak. Conversely, less diverse consumption reduces the risk of overweight.

Abstract

Inductively Couple Plasma (ICP) is a standard method to detect urinary sodium. However, the urinary sodium analysis method has a limitation in which the process to free sodium from molecules is not digest thoroughly. Ionic Selected Electrode (ISE) method is the better option. A New authomatic instrument Na-K-Cl automatic digital analyser that is “Spotchem EL 1520” using ISE method (dry ISE) was developed but the application to detect urinary sodium has not yet done. The purpose of this trial was to test the accuracy of the instrument in detecting urinary sodium. A number of 100 people  aged 20-64 years participated in the trial by  collecting around 50 mL fresh urine. Urinary sodium was analysed by ICP method in chemical laboratory and by ISE method using the digital analyser instrument. A number of 6 out of 100 urine sample did not meet a minimum volume requirement to be analysed by ICP method but it was able to be analysed using ISE method. The instrument was able to detect urinary sodium more than 132 (SD:77,81) mmol/L compared to Laboratory ICP method 79.38 (SD: 47,50) mmol/L. The Sensitivity of the instrument to detect sodium in urine was 97.6% (95% CI : 87.1-99.9%) and the Specivicity was 58 % (95% CI: 44.7-71.9). The trial also analysed urinary creatinine with aution instrument. A number of 10 urine sample was analysed by private clinical laboratory as quality control.  Aution is semi quantitave digital analyser and the result was inline with quantitative (controlled sample). The automatic digital analyser can be used as alternative for conventional analyses of urinary sodium.ABSTRAKMetode deteksi konsentrasi sodium dapat dilakukan dengan metode ICP atau ISE.

Abstract

The feeding practices of infants and children (PMBA) at the age of 6-24 months should be done correctly and appropriately. Errors in feeding in this period may cause malnutrition and stunted. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of counseling by Posyandu cadres on changes in infant and child feeding practices (PMBA) done by mothers among infants and children aged 6-24 months. Quasi-experimental research design with one group pre-post test design was applied and envolving 78 mothers of infants and children aged 6-24 months. Data on feeding practices of infants and children were obtained by interviewing mothers using a structured questionnaire covered data of mothers, babies and children, health status and growth, and the practice of breastfeeding and complementary feeding as well as hygiene were also collected. PMBA practices were then being scored covered all indicators, then categorized into 3 groups : being good if the score = 80, enough 60-79.9 and less if the score is 60. T-test and Wilcoxon rank test were used at the significance level of 0.05. The average value of infant and child feeding practices by caregivers before counseling was 70.0 and increased to 75.2 after counseling. PMBA practices of mothers categorized as good increased from 25.3% to 46.7%. This study showed that there was an effect of counseling on the improvement of feeding practices for baby by mother/ caregivers (p 0.01). In conclusion counseling carried out by Posyandu cadres may improve the practice of PMBA by mother for their infants and children at the aged 6-24 months.

Abstract

School-age children are approved as agents of change, easy, motivated, and competent. The right media will facilitate the delivery of messages, set more goals, save time, and reduce misunderstanding of the recipient of the message. The study aimed to determine the differences in knowledge about nutrition using pop up book media, PGS cards, and leaflets to improve PGS knowledge, attitudes and behavior in elementary school students. Quasi-experimental research design was pre-post test with control group design in 3 groups in 3 different elementary schools. The sample of 123 students who were divided into intervention groups were given counseling from PGS with pop up book media and PGS cards and control groups using leaflet media. Intervention was given 4 times for 8 weeks (counseling every 2 weeks). Data analysis using paired t-test and ANOVA test. The results of the analysis showed that the highest mean in knowledge score (15.00 ± 3.35) and significant was found in the PGS cards group (p = 0.017). No increase in attitude and behavior scores (p0.05) in all media. Only the average knowledge score showed a significant difference between media (p = 0.001). Thus, it can be concluded that there are differences in students' knowledge about PGS between before and after PGS counseling using nutritional promotion media (pop up book, PGS card, and leaflets) and otherwise with attitudes and behavior.

Abstract

Population transfers between countries occur a lot, especially because of education. There are many international students in various parts of the world, including in Surabaya, Indonesia. Environmental differencescause changesin the eating habits that affect the amount of macronutrients intake among international students. The aims of this research was to analyze the differences of macronutrients intake among international students before and while live in Surabaya. This study was a cross-sectional design with 30 samples. Data were collected by in-depth interviews, the Dietary History instruments and Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire through interview. Data were  analized  by t-test through the SPPS application. The results showed that there were differencesin macronutrient intake of international students before and during their stay in Surabaya (p0,005). There  was a decrease in the average intake of energy, proteins, fat, and carbohydrates. It was due to inadequate access to food, often skipping meals, and can not accept the taste of Indonesian cuisine. Frequency and number of food portions of international students need to be increased. In addition, assistance from the universities are needed to increase access to food for international students.
