Abstract

Microplastic pollution poses a severe threat to marine ecosystems due to its persistence and toxicity, necessitating innovative biodegradation strategies. This study explored the potential of bacteria isolated from mangrove sediments of the Paluh Getah mangrove forest, North Sumatra, to degrade common microplastics, including LDPE, HDPE, PET, PP, and PS. Ten bacterial isolates were obtained and screened for their ability to grow on microplastic-supplemented mineral salt medium over 20 days. Three isolates (BPM 5, BPM 9, and BPM 10) demonstrated robust growth, with biochemical tests confirming catalase activity critical for managing oxidative stress during plastic degradation. Molecular identification via 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed the isolates as Enterobacter sp. and Brevibacillus parabrevis, both known for their biodegradation capacities. The findings underscore the diverse metabolic pathways these bacteria employ to utilize microplastics as carbon sources. This research highlights the promise of mangrove sediment bacteria as eco-friendly bioremediation agents to mitigate microplastic pollution in coastal environments. Further studies are required to optimize degradation conditions and elucidate enzymatic mechanisms to enhance practical applications.

Abstract

The golden age of lifelong learning begins when children are between the ages of 0 and 6. The objectives of this research are to determine the effect of the giant snakes and ladders game media on children's motor development and counting skills at Nusa Indah Kindergarten, and to determine the effect of the giant snakes and ladders game media on children's counting skills at Nusa Indah Kindergarten. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental research design. The results of this study indicate that the learning outcomes of early childhood students in group B at Nusa Indah Kindergarten, through the jumbo snakes and ladders game model, can improve children's motor development. Second, the jumbo snakes and ladders game model can also improve the counting abilities of early childhood students.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate students’ satisfaction with academic services and analyze open-ended opinions using the Artificial Intelligence Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (AI-BERT) model. The research employed a quantitative experimental method, combining a five-point Likert scale survey across seven academic service indicators and AI-BERT sentiment analysis of 150 student comments. The results indicate that the overall student satisfaction level falls into the “good” category, with a Student Satisfaction Index (SSI) of 78.53%. The highest-rated indicator was access to academic information (mean = 4.21), while the lowest was administrative service speed (mean = 3.67). Sentiment analysis revealed 60.67% positive, 36.00% negative, and 3.33% neutral opinions, highlighting the need for improvement in service speed and staff responsiveness. Evaluation of the AI-BERT model demonstrated superior performance with an accuracy of 91.3% and an F1-score of 0.913, outperforming conventional methods such as SVM and Naïve Bayes. These findings provide a basis for recommendations on developing digital-based academic service strategies and leveraging AI technology to enhance service efficiency and quality.

Abstract

Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) have great potential in supporting the economy of forest communities through sustainable utilization based on local wisdom. This study aims to analyze the potential of NTFPs, identify value chains, and formulate development strategies to improve the welfare of forest communities. The study was conducted in three villages: Tuwung Village, Luwuk Kanan Village, and Sei Gohong Village in Central Kalimantan. The research method used a qualitative and quantitative approach through interviews, observations, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and market analysis. The development strategy analysis used SWOT. The results showed that NTFPs: rattan (Calamus spp.), stingless bee honey (Trigona sp.), and medicinal plants: bajakah (Uncaria gambir Roxb.), Dayak onion/lemba onion (Eleutherine bulbosa) are the types of NTFPs most dominantly utilized by the community, both for personal use, sale, or partly for personal use and partly for sale. However, the NTFP value chain is still weak in post-harvest aspects, processing, and market access. The SWOT analysis results show that the NTFP product development strategy falls into Quadrant IV (defensive strategy). This defensive strategy involves rationalizing activities, focusing on one or two potential superior products. Tuwung Village focuses on stingless bee honey, Luwuk Kanan Village on rattan, and Sei Gohong on medicinal plants (bajakah, Dayak onions/lemba onions). Furthermore, strengthening community capacity, improving group institutions, diversifying products, and supporting policies are key to realizing a sustainable NTFP-based economy. This study confirms that value chain development and appropriate strategies for selecting NTFP products are crucial for promoting inclusive and sustainable economic development for communities surrounding forests in Central Kalimantan.

Abstract

Microplastics have begun to be detected in human food sources such as water and marine fish. One of the solutions that has been increasingly studied and developed is edible film. Sago starch holds significant potential to be developed as a raw material for edible film production. However, the physical characteristics of edible films made from pure sago starch tend to be brittle, water-soluble, and mechanically weak. To enhance their physical quality, additives such as lecithin and carboxymethyl cellulose or CMC are required. This study aimed to evaluate the physical properties of sago-based edible films, including thickness, solubility, tensile strength, and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), at various concentrations of lecithin (0.3%, 0.5%, 0.7%, and 1.5%) and CMC (0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%, and 0.7%) to determine the optimal formulation for use as food packaging. The research employed experimental research, using Completely Randomized Design. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Duncan’s post hoc test. Results showed that both lecithin and CMC concentrations significantly affected the physical characteristics of the edible films. Based on these observations, treatment B4 was identified as having the best overall physical characteristics, providing a good balance between mechanical strength and water resistance with adequate film thickness.

Abstract

Numeracy skills in the context of science are crucial in helping students understand and interpret scientific phenomena quantitatively. However, there has been no comprehensive review of students' numeracy skills in the context of science in secondary schools, particularly in the Bandung area. This study aims to describe the level of numeracy skills in the context of science and identify areas of student weakness. The method used is descriptive quantitative, involving 121 11th-grade students from several schools. Students who had taken science subjects (physics, chemistry, and biology) in 10th grade were assessed on numeracy skills covering five numeracy domains: arithmetic, algebra, data processing, graphing, and geometry. The data were analyzed descriptively using mean values, standard deviations, and minimum and maximum score ranges. These findings indicate that students' numeracy skills are generally in the moderate to low category, with a wide distribution of scores. Data processing is the domain with the highest success rate, while arithmetic received the lowest average score of the five numeracy domains. Strengthening in arithmetic operations is also needed to calculate decimals, ratios, fractions, and percentages. These results indicate the need to integrate numeracy content into science learning to strengthen students' numeracy skills.

Abstract

Thehift in the learning paradigm emphasizes the importance of active student involvement through project-based learning. This research was conducted at PGRI Silampari University with 32 students as research subjects. The problem of this research is how the data on process skills, learning outcomes and perceptions of Biology Education students at PGRI Silampari University after project-based learning. The purpose of this study was to determine the data on process skills, learning outcomes, and student perceptions after learning with a project-based learning model. This research method is a descriptive method with a quantitative approach. The research instruments are observation sheets, tests, and questionnaires. The results of this study are that students achieve learning outcomes in the high category after the implementation of Project-based learning, data on students' science process skills, namely observation indicators obtained 75.25%, interpretation 67%, classification 75%, experimental planning 75%, use of tools 81.25%, predicting 77%, application of concepts 80%, communicating 100%. The average score obtained was 78.75% with a high category. Student learning outcomes in the Animal Development Course show that in general the final achievement is in the good category. Based on the final grades of 32 students, the highest score was 95.4, while the lowest was 65, with an overall average score of 78.85, which is categorized as Good. The conclusion of this study is that most students were able to achieve learning outcomes well, acquire meaningful new knowledge through problem-solving, and think critically

Abstract

This study examines how science literacy and healthy living behaviors jointly shape family health within a household ecology framework. Using a non‐experimental, cross-sectional design, we surveyed 40 mothers from an urban area in western Indonesia. Validated questionnaires (CVI = 0.86; Cronbach’s α ≥ 0.70) measured science literacy, healthy living, and family health. Data were analyzed with Pearson’s correlations and multiple linear regression after meeting parametric assumptions (Shapiro–Wilk p > 0.05; VIF = 1.54; Durbin–Watson = 1.85; no heteroscedasticity). Correlations were positive and significant: science literacy with family health (r = 0.65, p < 0.01), healthy living with family health (r = 0.70, p < 0.01), and science literacy with healthy living (r = 0.58, p < 0.01). The regression model was significant, F(2,37) = 18.45, p < 0.001, explaining 50% of the variance in family health (R² = 0.50). Both predictors contributed uniquely (β_science literacy = 0.35, p = 0.007; β_healthy living = 0.45, p = 0.001), with healthy living showing the stronger effect. Findings underscore that strengthening science literacy is necessary but insufficient unless translated into day-to-day healthy practices. We recommend community-based programs that couple non-formal science education with practice-oriented training (nutrition, sanitation, household hygiene). Future studies should employ larger, longitudinal samples and incorporate socio-economic and environmental covariates.

Abstract

This research analyzes elementary school students' critical thinking skills in science learning through Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model assisted by animated video media. Using a qualitative approach, the study was conducted at SDN Garon 01, Balerejo District, Madiun Regency, involving 28 sixth-grade students. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation from 12 primary informants, with analysis following the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model. Results show that PjBL implementation with animated video media effectively develops students' critical thinking abilities in solar system material. Students demonstrated improved performance across six critical thinking aspects: interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation. Most students successfully analyzed astronomical information, evaluated materials for project creation, and synthesized knowledge from multiple sources. Animated video media enhanced learning by increasing student motivation, visualizing abstract astronomical concepts, and stimulating analytical questioning. The PjBL model facilitated learning through authentic problem-solving, collaborative group work, and hands-on experience in creating scientific models. Despite challenges including time constraints and varied student abilities, the integration of PjBL with animated video media significantly improved elementary students' critical thinking skills. These findings support the effectiveness of combining innovative pedagogical approaches with technology to develop higher-order thinking skills in elementary science education.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia due to impaired insulin secretion or action. DM patients may develop diabetic nephropathy (ND), marked by decreased glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), also influenced by hypertension. Vitamin D in its active form, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), regulates insulin secretion and supports pancreatic beta cell survival. The relationship between 25(OH)D, HbA1c, and ND needs evaluation to predict ND earlier. To analyze the correlation between 25(OH)D and HbA1c levels with ND measured by eGFR in DM patients at Diponegoro National Hospital, Semarang. A cross-sectional study of 82 DM patients. 25(OH)D levels were measured by Fluorescent Immunoassay (FIA) and HbA1c by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). eGFR was calculated from creatinine using the CKD-EPI formula. Data analysis used Pearson and regression tests (p<0.25).  A weak positive correlation was found between HbA1c and eGFR (p=0.002, r=0.307) and a very weak negative correlation between 25(OH)D and eGFR (p=0.147, r=-0.117). The combined influence of HbA1c, 25(OH)D, and blood pressure yielded R²=0.21. Higher HbA1c increases eGFR, while lower 25(OH)D also associates with higher eGFR. eGFR is influenced by HbA1c, 25(OH)D, and blood pressure by 21%, with other factors explaining the remainder.
