Abstract

Drought is a type of natural disaster that progresses slowly and persists over an extended period until the rainy season arrives. Deficit in precipitation is referred to as meteorological drought, deficiency in soil moisture is defined as agricultural drought, and shortages in groundwater, river streamflow, and lake storage are known as hydrological drought. Monitoring and predicting drought are crucial activities to anticipate and mitigate its impacts. This study aims to determine the drought indices and the propagation of meteorological drought into hydrological drought in the Tarei Watershed using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Streamflow Index (SSI) methods. The SPI and SSI methods can identify potential droughts, as precipitation and discharge are the primary indicators of meteorological and hydrological droughts, respectively. The propagation of meteorological drought to hydrological drought was then analyzed using Pearson Correlation. The drought analysis using the SPI method in the Tarei Watershed revealed that the "exceptionally dry" category occurred in December 2001, February 2004, March 2012, and January 2023, with drought indices of -2.445, -2.633, -2.332, and -2.177, respectively. Meanwhile, using the SSI method, hydrological drought in the Tarei Watershed under the "exceptionally dry" category occurred in March 2022, October 2023, March 2024, and March 2025, with drought indices of -3.515, -2.773, -3.048, and -2.425, respectively. Drought propagation was evaluated by correlating SPI values against SSI using 1-month, 2-month, and 3-month time steps. The highest 1-month correlation occurred at a 0-month lag with a value of 0.683, while the 2-month and 3-month methods yielded the highest correlation values of 0.955 and 0.950, respectively. These results indicate a strong correlation between hydrological and meteorological drought in the Tarei Watershed, which can serve as a guideline for anticipating hydrological drought

Abstract

Despite increasing attention to technology-integrated STEM learning in teacher education, limited studies have examined how artifact-based project learning reveals pre-service chemistry teachers’ creative thinking in designing media for abstract chemistry concepts. This study explored pre-service chemistry teachers’ creative thinking in integrated Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge–Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics learning through teaching aid development. A descriptive-exploratory design involved 12 master’s students in chemistry education. Data were collected using a student perception questionnaire, open-ended responses, documentation, and analysis of three artifacts: TyndallScope, Guess Who? Periodic Table Educational Game, and Chromatography Chamber Guide. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, while qualitative data were examined through artifact analysis and thematic interpretation. The results showed perceptions, with the highest mean scores in creativity (M = 4.35; SD = 0.48), relevance of integrated learning (M = 4.29; SD = 0.32), and usefulness of technology (M = 4.25; SD = 0.41). Artifact analysis showed that creative thinking was represented through originality, usefulness, flexibility, and elaboration. The products demonstrated learning innovation through colloid visualization, game-based periodic table reasoning, and guided chromatography inquiry. These findings indicate that artifact-based project learning can make creative pedagogical thinking visible and provide a meaningful context for instructional media design among pre-service chemistry teachers.

Abstract

Digital technology integration has become increasingly important in science education, particularly in efforts to support quality and sustainable learning environment. This systematic review examines how digital technologies are integrated into science education and identifies the roles of teacher competence, pedagogical design, learning outcomes, and contextual conditions. A systematic search of the Scopus database using PRISMA informed procedures identified 136 records; of which 38 studies were included after screening and eligibility assessment. The findings were synthesized into four themes: teacher competence, pedagogical design, learning outcomes, and implementation conditions. The synthesis indicated that digital technologies can support science learning by enhancing visualization, inquiry, engagement, and collaboration when aligned with appropriate pedagogical strategies and supported by adequate implementation conditions. However, technology integration does not automatically produce improved learning outcomes, as its effectiveness depends on teacher readiness, instructional design, infrastructure, and equity of access. The review concludes that digital technology functions as an enabling condition for sustainable science education rather than an independent determinant of learning outcomes

Abstract

Tidal flooding has become an increasingly significant environmental hazard in coastal areas. This study aims to: (1) identify the spatial characteristics of tidal flooding in the coastal area, (2) analyze the spatial factors influencing tidal flood vulnerability; (3) assess the level of tidal flood vulnerability using geospatial analysis; and (4) propose adaptation strategies based on the resulting vulnerability patterns. The analysis includes eight key variables: slope gradient, elevation, distance to the coastline, distance to the river, Topographic Moisture Index (TWI), soil type, rainfall, and land use. The spatial datasets were processed in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment and integrated using a multi-criteria spatial analysis approach to generate a tidal flood vulnerability map. The results showed that vulnerability to tidal flooding was strongly associated with low elevation, gentle slopes, proximity to the coastline and river network, high TWI values, poorly drained alluvial soils, high rainfall intensity, and land use dominated by settlements, fish farming ponds, and agricultural land. The vulnerability assessment classified the study area into five categories: very high (5,717 ha; 12.62%), high (7,919 ha; 17.47%), moderate (5,515 ha; 12.17%), low (2,404 ha; 5.30%), and very low (23,762 ha; 52.44%). Areas with high and very high vulnerability were concentrated in lowland coastal zones and riverine environments. Adaptation strategies include strengthening coastal protection, improving drainage infrastructure, implementing ecosystem-based coastal management, regulating land use in vulnerable areas, and enhancing community-based disaster preparedness. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of geospatial analysis to support tidal flood risk reduction and sustainable coastal planning.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology requires vocational education institutions to implement innovative learning approaches that can improve students’ motivation and learning outcomes. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of Project Based Learning (PjBL)-based digital jobsheets using the Liveworksheets platform in improving students’ motivation and learning outcomes in the Electromechanical Control Systems element. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method using a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The study was conducted at SMK Negeri 1 Batam involving 86 eleventh-grade students of Industrial Automation Engineering, divided into an experimental class and a control class. The experimental class was taught using PjBL-based digital jobsheets through Liveworksheets, while the control class used conventional printed jobsheets. Data were collected through learning motivation questionnaires, cognitive achievement tests, performance observations, and documentation. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Independent Sample t-test, and Normalized Gain (N-Gain). The results showed significant differences between the experimental and control groups in learning outcomes (Sig. = 0.009 < 0.05) and learning motivation (Sig. = 0.002 < 0.05). The experimental class achieved a higher average learning outcome score (81.49) and learning motivation score (59.88) than the control class (76.07 and 52.81, respectively). Furthermore, the N-Gain scores indicated moderate improvement in learning outcomes (0.62) and learning motivation (0.48) in the experimental class, which were higher than those of the control class. These findings indicate that PjBL-based digital jobsheets through Liveworksheets are effective in enhancing students’ motivation and learning outcomes in vocational education learning

Abstract

Water Quality Management is an essential competency in Brackish and Marine Fisheries Agribusiness because it requires students to integrate scientific knowledge, technology, quantitative analysis, and problem-solving skills in authentic aquaculture contexts. However, learning activities are still predominantly supported by conventional materials, while the use of digital learning resources remains limited. This study aimed to develop a STEM-based e-module for Water Quality Management and determine its validity, practicality, and effectiveness as a learning resource for vocational high school students. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, consisting of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The participants were 15 eleventh-grade students of the Brackish and Marine Fisheries Agribusiness Program and one subject teacher at SMK Negeri 1 Seri Kuala Lobam. Data were collected through expert validation sheets, teacher and student response questionnaires, and pretest–posttest assessments. The results showed that the e-module was highly valid and highly practical, with validation and practicality scores of 93.75% and 98.6%, respectively. Learning outcomes improved from a mean pretest score of 73.0 to 90.0, with an N-Gain of 0.61, categorized as moderate. The t-test indicated a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that the STEM-based e-module is a valid, practical, and effective digital learning resource for Water Quality Management in vocational fisheries education

Abstract

Reservoirs that already support hydropower and water supply are increasingly viewed as sites for floating photovoltaic (FPV) development, a pairing that speaks directly to SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). Taking Sutami Reservoir in East Java as a case, this study examines an FPV layout occupying 5% of the reservoir's normal water surface area (602.499,80 m²), with attention to electricity yield, evaporation-related water savings, and financial viability. Energy output was estimated from irradiance and module-efficiency parameters, evaporation savings were derived from the change in exposed surface area, and feasibility was judged through four standard indicators: Net Present Value (NPV), Benefit-Cost ratio (B/C), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and Payback Period (PP). At an installed capacity 100 MWp, the system is projected to generate 175.80 GWh annually—about 23,89% of the existing hydropower plant's output—while conserving roughly 2,48 million m³ of water per year, a 54,61% gain in raw-water benefit. The economic analysis is less clear-cut: NPV comes to Rp 26,03 billion and B/C reaches 1,01, but IRR sits at only 7,1% and payback stretches to 23,30 years against a 30-year assumed project life—leaving roughly seven years of net benefit at the end, a narrower window than the headline numbers suggest. Taken together, the results point to real technical benefits from combining energy generation with water conservation at Sutami Reservoir, though the thin economic margin warrants a closer sensitivity analysis before the project moves toward implementation
