Abstract

This study analyzes the Lorax (2012) film through an ecolinguistic lens, focusing on salience patterns as a reminder of environmental degradation. The film portrays the consequences of excessive exploitation of nature using powerful visual and linguistic narratives. Applying Arran Stibbe’s framework, the research identifies linguistic elements such as activation, concreteness, metaphor, metonymy, hyponymy, and transitivity patterns that emotionally and ideologically highlight environmental issues. The findings reveal that Lorax not only delivers a moral message about the importance of environmental care but also fosters ecological awareness through its language use. This study affirms that ecolinguistics is a potent tool for uncovering hidden ideologies and promoting sustainable behavior through popular media.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter yang terdapat di dalam buku cerita rakyat Putri Tujuh. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan sumber data penelitian berupa buku cerita rakyat Putri Tujuh yang memuat beberapa tokoh yang mempunyai peran yang berbeda-beda, seperti peran antagonis dan protagonis. Analisis data yang dilakukan yaitu dengan menggunakan teknik analisis isi. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa cerita rakyat Putri Tujuh mengandung beberapa nilai pendidikan karakter, antara lain: (1) nilai kejujuran, (2) nilai kepedulian, (3) nilai kesopanan dan kepatuhan, (4) nilai pantang menyerah, (5) nilai rela berkorban, (6) nilai religius, (7) nilai tanggung jawab. Penggunaan cerita rakyat sebagai bahan pembelajaran dalam menumbuhkan pendidikan karakter karena cerita rakyat mudah dipahami oleh siswa. Selain mudah dipahami, siswa juga dapat menerapkan nilai-nilai karakter tersebut dikehidupan sehari-hari dengan cepat. Selain itu, siswa dapat mengetahui sejarah atau cerita-cerita pada zaman dahulu yang dapat menjadi kisah atau pelajaran untuk masa sekarang.

Abstract

This study examines the use of slang in the film Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), focusing on its forms and contextual meanings. Slang is a distinct feature of informal communication that reflects identity, creativity, and cultural belonging. The research applies a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected from the dialogues of the main characters in the film. The slang expressions are classified based on Allan and Burridge’s framework, which includes clipping, imitative, flippant, fresh and creative, and acronym types. The analysis shows that the film makes extensive use of slang, not only as a stylistic device but also as a means of character development and humor. The findings reveal that fresh and creative slang is the most frequently used, highlighting Deadpool’s humorous and playful personality, while other types such as flippant and imitative contribute to the depiction of sarcasm, casualness, and social bonding. Through these uses, slang becomes an essential part of the film’s dialogue, enriching its entertainment value and reflecting cultural expressions in contemporary media. This study concludes that the analysis of slang in film can provide deeper insight into language variation, identity, and cultural context.

Abstract

The Saltburn (2023) film directed by Emerald Fennell presents an intriguing example of a psychopathic character through its main protagonist, Oliver Quick. At first, Oliver appears as an ordinary scholarship student, but as the story unfolds, his dark personality and manipulative behaviour begin to show. This research aims to analyse the psychopathic characteristics of Oliver Quick using Verstappen’s psychopath theory and Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis, including the tripartite model (id, ego, and superego). The research used a qualitative method to analyse the data and draw the conclusion. The data were collected from actions and dialogues in the film. Each psychopathic trait that has been collected was analysed using Freud’s theory by mapping them into id, ego and superego. The results show that Oliver possesses seven key traits of a psychopath: lack of empathy, lack of remorse, superficiality, impulsivity, irresponsibility, compulsive lying, and manipulativeness. These traits are closely connected to Freud’s concept of the id and ego. However, there are no evidence of the superego’s role in Oliver's character, indicating a lack of moral conscience. This research utilized a combination of two psychological frameworks, which are psychopathy and psychoanalysis, to deeply understand a literary character’s behaviour. This research also shows how psychological theory can be applied to literature and film, helping readers and future researchers better recognise and analyse psychopathic behaviour in fictional characters.

Abstract

Muara Kaman merupakan salah satu daerah yang dialiri oleh Sungai Mahakam. Beberapa masyarakat Muara Kaman berprofesi sebagai nelayan oleh sebab itu peneliti tertarik untuk meneliti penamaan alat menangkap ikan yang digunakan masyarakat Kutai di Muara Kaman. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mendeskripsikan bagaimana bentuk, makna dan fungsi serta nilai budaya pada penamaan alat menangkap ikan pada masyarakat Kutai di Muara Kaman. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian lapangan. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini berupa tuturan tentang alat menangkap ikan dalam masyarakat Kutai di Muara Kaman. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada 14 Mei 2024-17 Mei 2024 yang berlokasi di Muara Kaman. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa dalam penelitian penamaan alat menangkap ikan pada masyarakat Kutai di Muara Kaman terdapat 12 data nama alat menangkap ikan pada masyarakat Kutai di Muara Kaman. 12 data tersebut terdapat empat pola yang muncul yakni Nama Alat (NA), Nama alat dan Nama ikan (NA+NI), Nama Alat dan Tempat (NA+T), Nama Alat, Nama Ikan, dan ukuran ikan (NA+NI+UI). Terdapat dua fungsi yakni fungsi estetik dan fungsi informasional dalam penamaan alat menangkap ikan pada masyarakat Kutai di Muara Kaman serta nilai budaya yaitu nilai kesejahteraan, nilai kerja keras, nilai disiplin, nilai pelestarian dan kreativitas budaya, dan nilai peduli lingkungan. Abstract

Personality is a trait or behavior included as the pattern of humans’ way of adapting themselves to their surroundings and shaped by the individuation process. This process is often reflected in character development in any literature within any genre, especially science fiction. Science fiction with a unique setting and metaphorical depiction influences the personality-building of the character, therefore becoming a potential for psychology-related analysis. This research applied individuation theory by Jung to analyze the character of the Time Traveller’s character in the Time Machine (2018) novel. The individuation process is the process of integrating consciousness and the unconscious aspects by passing five stages, involving four main archetypes, such as the persona, shadow, anima, and self. Time Traveller’s experience in time-traveling becomes a trigger of his individuation process. This research applied a descriptive qualitative analysis with a psychological approach to analyze the Time Traveller character.  The result of this research is Time Traveller passed five stages, such as confront the unconscious, dethrone the persona, accepting the dark sides or shadow, accepting the anima, and transcend with involvement in his four main archetypes in each stage. The five stages that he faced were triggered by certain events and conflicts in the future world that slowly influenced his traits or behavior. In the end, Time Traveller’s personality made some better individual changes from ego-driven to empathetic with balanced emotions after his time-travelling. His time-traveling experience is considered not only a physical journey but also a metaphorical journey for the Time Traveller toward the wholeness of himself.

Abstract

ABSTRAKNovel sebagai karya sastra tidak hanya menghadirkan alur dan tokoh, tetapi juga menyimpan representasi kehidupan batin manusia. Konflik, trauma, serta pertarungan emosi yang dialami tokoh sering kali mencerminkan dinamika psikologis yang menarik untuk dikaji. Hal tersebut tampak jelas dalam novel SYNC karya Jysa Nursakinah yang menampilkan dua tokoh utama, Haru dan Jeon dengan kompleksitas batin yang menggambarkan pergulatan antara kesadaran dan ketidaksadaran diri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) menganalisis arketipe Jung yang mencakup persona, shadow, anima, dan animus, (2) mengidentifikasi manifestasi personal unconscious dan collective unconscious, serta (3) mendeskripsikan bentuk kepribadian tokoh utama dalam novel SYNC karya Jysa Nursakinah.Jenis penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif analisis isi. Data yang digunakan berupa kutipan naratif, dialog, dan deskripsi peristiwa dalam novel SYNC karya Jysa Nursakinah. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan metode baca dan catat, sedangkan analisis dilakukan melalui tahap reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Haru dan Jeon memiliki kepribadian yang kompleks dan saling melengkapi. Haru mengalami trauma dan tekanan emosional yang merepresentasikan dominasi shadow, sedangkan Jeon memperlihatkan sisi rasional dan perfeksionis yang menutupi kerentanan emosionalnya. Keduanya menjalani proses individuasi menuju keseimbangan antara kesadaran dan ketidaksadaran. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa novel SYNC tidak hanya menyajikan kisah fiksi, tetapi juga merepresentasikan dinamika psikologis manusia berdasarkan teori psikoanalisis Carl Gustav Jung.Kata kunci: Kepribadian Tokoh Utama, Psikologi Sastra, Novel SYNC  ABSTRACTAs a literary work, a novel not only presents plot and characters but also represents the inner life of humans. The conflicts, trauma, and emotional struggles experienced by the characters often reflect psychological dynamics that are interesting to study. This is clearly evident in Jysa Nursakinah's novel SYNC, which features two main characters, Haru and Jeon, whose inner complexities illustrate the struggle between consciousness and the unconscious. This study aims to (1) analyze Jung's archetypes, including the persona, shadow, anima, and animus; (2) identify manifestations of the personal unconscious and collective unconscious; and (3) describe the personality traits of the main characters in Jysa Nursakinah's novel SYNC.This research is a qualitative study with a descriptive content analysis approach. The data used are narrative excerpts, dialogues, and descriptions of events in Jysa Nursakinah's novel SYNC. Data collection techniques used the reading and note-taking method, while analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that Haru and Jeon have complex and complementary personalities. Haru experiences trauma and emotional distress that represent the dominance of the shadow, while Jeon displays a rational and perfectionist side that masks her emotional vulnerability. Both undergo a process of individuation toward a balance between consciousness and the unconscious. These findings indicate that the novel SYNC presents not only a fictional story but also represents human psychological dynamics based on Carl Gustav Jung's psychoanalytic theory.Keywords: Main Characters Personality, Literary Psychological, SYNC Novel

Abstract

This study examines how climate justice was discursively constructed in official statements delivered at the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Egypt. It aims to identify and compare the discursive strategies used by a representative developed actor, the European Union, and a developing actor, Pakistan speaking for the Group of 77 and China, and to analyze how linguistic features frame Loss and Damage as either historical responsibility and compensation or as a technical capacity issue. Employing a descriptive qualitative design grounded in Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional model of Critical Discourse Analysis, the research analyzes textual data from the two actors' public statements using a systematic procedure that includes keyword identification, grammatical and lexical analysis, and contextual interpretation. The findings reveal a clear discursive divergence: Pakistan constructs climate justice as a demand for reparative justice based on historical responsibility. In contrast, the European Union frames the issue as a capacity gap, privileging procedural solutions, and funding arrangements that depoliticize liability. The conference outcome to establish a Loss and Damage fund constituted a symbolic success for justice claims but adopted flexible, non-binding arrangements that preserve developed actors' influence.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menganalisis keterasingan manusia dari alam dalam cerpen Sumur karya Eka Kurniawan melalui pendekatan ekokritik Greg Garrard. Metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan teknik pencatatan kutipan teks yang relevan. Analisis difokuskan pada enam unsur ekokritik Garrard: binatang, polusi, hutan belantara, bencana, tempat tinggal, dan bumi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kerusakan alam di dalam cerpen dipicu oleh perubahan iklim yang mengganggu siklus musim, disebabkan oleh aktivitas manusia seperti kontaminasi dan penebangan liar. Faktor penyebab kerusakan lingkungan terbagi menjadi faktor alam (kemarau panjang, hujan badai, banjir bandang, angin topan) dan faktor manusia (pembangunan bendungan tidak terencana, penebangan liar). Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa aktivitas manusia tanpa mempertimbangkan aspek lingkungan menjadi penyumbang bencana dan kerusakan alam terbesarKata kunci: : Cerpen, Ekokritik Sastra, Keterasingan Manusia, Alam

Abstract

This research examined the symbolic meanings of Arthur's journey to becoming king in the film King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017) by Guy Ritchie. The background of this research highlighted the importance of symbols in culture and media, as well as the role of semiotic approaches in interpreting the implied meanings within the film. The purpose of this research is to analyze the signs that reflect Arthur's transformation into the rightful king. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a semiotic approach as proposed by Roland Barthes through the system of signification: denotation, connotation, and myth. Data were collected through the observation of visual, audio, and utterance elements in the film. The research findings indicated that there are 15 signs in Arthur’s journey towards self-discovery as king that are reflected through these signs, which consist of objects, animals, mental experiences, people, and myths that accompanied his emotional and spiritual transformation until he became king. The 11 main signs include The Sword in the Stone or Excalibur, Water, Street, Nightmare, Prostitutes, Eagle, The Darklands, Vision, Lady of the Lake, The Mage, and The Round Table. Additionally, there are 4 supporting signs: Snake, Giant Bat, Giant Rats, and Giant Wolf. These signs represent the concepts that shaped the entirety of Arthur's journey to becoming king. Arthur, who grew up on the streets, strives to free himself from the shadows of his dark past and the pressure of a destiny he has yet to understand.
