Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Communication plays a crucial role in daily interactions, and to ensure effective exchanges, certain conversational rules must be followed. When these rules are intentionally broken, the resulting implications often reveal more than the words themselves. This research analyzes the flouting of conversational maxims as proposed by Grice in the romantic comedy film Anyone But You (2023), focusing on the main characters, Bea and Ben. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study identifies and categorizes instances in which the characters flout the maxims of quantity, quality, relation, and manner, and aims to identify the strategies they use to flout these maxims. The data, drawn from the characters' dialogues, reveal how flouting is employed to express emotional complexity, especially in the context of their love-hate relationship. The results show that Bea frequently flouts the maxim of quantity to emphasize her argument and persuasion, while Ben often flouts the maxim of relevance by redirect the conversation and giving unrelated comments. They both also flout the maxims of quality and manner to create humor, conceal true feelings. This study highlights how such linguistic strategies enhance the narrative, and it contributes to a deeper understanding of pragmatic phenomena in cinematic dialogue. Additionally, this research has differences from prior studies by applying the flouting maxim theory to romantic comedies with love-hate relationship dynamics. Keywords: Flouting Maxim, Romantic Comedy, Anyone but You

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the representation of monomyth in the Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One film through the character Ethan Hunt using Campbell’s hero’s journey theory. This study also analyzed the plot and Ethan’s characterization to find out whether the plot in the modern film is related to Campbell’s hero’s journey theory. This study also focused on Ethan’s journey as the main character who goes through various events according to Campbell’s hero’s journey. The data source in this study is the Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One film. The story in this film was relevant to the modern world, exploring the dangers of out-of-control AI technology. The data taken in this study were dialogues, monologues, and events that represent the hero’s journey experienced by Ethan as the main character. The data collection technique was watching the film repeatedly, looking at the transcription of the film, highlighting important events, and taking notes for the analysis. This study used a structuralism approach that concentrates more on identifying and describing the structures in the hero’s journey. The analysis of this data showed that Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One successfully represents the monomyth through the character of Ethan by using Campbell’s hero’s journey theory. The analysis of the plot and Ethan’s characterization in this film showed that although this film is modern, Campbell’s hero’s journey theory is still relevant and applicable, even though the story has a different context from traditional myths or legends.

Abstract

This research examines the meanings of the symbols appearing in Rumaan Alam's novel "Leave The World Behind." The discussion for the meaning of these symbols utilize the New Criticism theory. This study found two important symbols from the story: the house and the animal (deer and flamingo). The house represents the calm and well-prepared personality of the homeowner. The animals represent the mode or the passage of transportation. These symbols emerge to explain the issue of anxiety inherent in humans. The animals represent the full meaning of anxiety. When anxiety arises, humans tend to flee to protect themselves. The house represents the need to remain calm and prepared to face the anxiety that arises.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of the idea of love in three famous sonnets by William Shakespeare: Sonnet 18 (“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”), Sonnet 116 (“Let me not to the marriage of true minds”), and Sonnet 64 (“When I have seen by Time’s fallen hand defaced”), written during the Renaissance period. Using a humanistic approach, this study seeks to uncover how Shakespeare portrays love as a human experience using Rollo May's existential theory of love, which encompasses four forms of love: Sex, Eros, Philia, and Agape. The approach used was qualitative-descriptive, with textual analysis of lines of sonnets containing the theme of love. The focus of the research was to identify how Rollo May’s forms of love can be found and interpreted in those sonnets. The results show that the three sonnets do not emphasize the physical aspect of love (sex), but rather present a deeper and more complex form of love. The findings demonstrate that love in Shakespeare's sonnets has an existential dimension that aligns with Rollo May's view of love as a profound and meaningful human experience.

Abstract

Corporate Social Responsibility discourse serves as a key platform for gender representation in Indonesia's male-dominated mining sector. This study examines linguistic gender patterns in PT Kideco Jaya Agung's Company Profile 2024 using Fairclough's (1992) three-dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis framework. Manual analysis identified 70 gender references across 45 pages, revealing "pria" dominance at 67.1% (47 instances) versus 32.9% female terms (23 instances), despite the company's reported 15% female workforce participation. Key findings demonstrate 69.6% of female references employ passive constructions compared to 27.7% of male references, positioning women as beneficiaries rather than operational agents. Collocational analysis shows male terms associated with core functions (operations, leadership) while female terms cluster around peripheral social programs (training, empowerment), evidencing tokenistic discourse despite numerical diversity achievements. These patterns confirm persistent patriarchal framing characteristic of mining CSR communication. The study recommends gender-neutral terminology, active voice constructions, and balanced collocational representation to achieve linguistic equity. Findings contribute methodological insights for analyzing corporate gender discourse in extractive industries. Keywords: CSR discourse, gender representation, critical discourse analysis, mining industry, linguistic asymmetry

Abstract

This research focuses on finding out the hero’s journey of the main character, Evelyn Wang, seen in Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) film. This research used Christopher Vogler’s hero’s journey theory to find out how Wang passed all the hero’s journey stages to finally become a hero. Qualitative method and structuralism approach were used in this research. The data taken in this research is in the form of words, phrases, sentences, dialogues, images, and actions which are seen throughout the film that indicate the hero’s journey of Wang. The result of this research reveals that Wang went through all 12 stages of the hero’s journey by Vogler and her journey is most likely unique. Unlike typical heroes that conquer their enemies through destruction, Wang’s journey focuses on self-acceptance, love, and finding meaning in an overwhelming world. By embracing her chaotic life experience, she becomes a hero not through physical strength, but through understanding and human connection. This is represented through her transformation from a stressed and overwhelmed woman who constantly fear to face her problems, to a courageous individual who embraces her difficulties with acceptance and understanding, illustrating her growth into a true hero.

Abstract

This study aims to find how the types and functions of expressive speech acts contained in Jesse's speech in the film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie affect Jesse's utterances in the film. This research used the descriptive qualitative method because the data came from utterances in the form of characters' conversational words in the film. Based on the analysis, the researcher identified six types of expressive speech acts out of nine examined. These types include thanking, apologizing, deploring, complimenting, complaining, and welcoming. Additionally, the researcher discovered eight functions of expressive speech acts from the ten examined. These functions are showing gratitude, appreciation, regret, heartfelt emotion, praise, empathy, dissatisfaction, and acceptance. In this study, each type of expressive speech act is connected to a specific function, emphasizing the importance of that function in expressing the speaker's intention. Therefore, some data in this study may reflect more than one function, as the speaker intends to convey a message that serves multiple purposes, as each utterance can carry meanings beyond their literal interpretation. The results of the analysis show that the expressive utterances used by the character affect the character's actions towards the situation and affect the meaning of the character purposes.

Abstract

Online gambling in Indonesia remains a widespread yet illegal activity, with promotional strategies evolving to evade detection and legal sanctions. This study investigates the persuasive and deceptive techniques used in online gambling advertisements by analyzing both textual and visual elements through the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The dataset consists of 34 headline-style advertisements accompanied by images, all extracted from news feed platforms. The findings reveal a notable shift from traditional promotional formats—often featuring authoritative figures—to the use of ordinary individuals such as students, food vendors, and local workers. This transition reflects a socio-economic targeting strategy, aimed particularly at middle- to low-income groups who may be more vulnerable to gambling appeals. The visual and linguistic construction of sudden wealth, casual success, and relatable personas serves to normalize gambling behavior and obscure its illegality. These patterns suggest a deliberate effort to embed gambling discourse within everyday contexts, enhancing its persuasive power. The study recommends increased public awareness campaigns, improved digital literacy education, and stronger regulatory oversight to help identify and counteract these multimodal tactics in online gambling promotion.
