Discourse stylistics focuses upon the largely implicit and highly ideological ‘background’ of the text. Mind style that is one of the traits of stylistics is going to be taken into account of doing the analysis since this research aims to find out about how the mind style of Amy Tan is shaped by her background in her way of writing and producing the novel The Joy Luck Club. The term ‘mind style’ (Leech and Short, 2007) is particularly appropriate where the choices made are consistent through a text or part of a text. This research is questioned whether or not Amy Tan’s Chinese background have influenced the novelist’s style as represented in her novel, The Joy Luck Club. This research describes the novel with a focus on the characters’ mind style in a stylistic and narrative approach. This research aims to attain the influence from the backgrounds of the novelist and the way the background affect the novelist’s style in producing literary work. The descriptions and explanations of scrutinizing the novel are hoped to provide examples of doing discourse stylistics to literary works. The specific use of Chinese words, the repetition use of pronouns, the presentation of Chinese superstitions have put so much contributions in shaping Amy Tan’s style in her works. Through her literary works, the novelist is able to show her readers linguistic journey through her wordplay style.

This study aims to find out how Willy Wonka's character in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film strived to overcome his inferiority state to achieve superiority in his life using the Adlerian strategy stages of Alfred Adler's individual psychology theory. This study was qualitative research with a psychoanalysis approach. The data from this study were the actions, dialogues, and other character’s narrations that are depicted in clip scenes from the film. In analyzing the data, the researcher identified each scene that depicted the factors that influenced the feelings of inferiority that appeared in Willy Wonka's character and analyzed how Willy Wonka strived for superiority. The results of this study indicated that there is a representation of Willy Wonka's inferior feelings because of his unpleasant childhood compared to his friends who had a pleasant childhood. This feeling of Willy's inferiority is triggered by several factors namely lifestyle, parenting patterns, and birth orders. After going through a period of inferiority, Willy finally achieved success in his life goals of becoming a famous chocolate maker and making his own chocolate factory. Willy's way to overcome these inferior feelings is applying superiority complex proposed by Alfred Adler which consists of creative-self, social interest, confidence, ambition, and striving for superiority.

AbstractThe research was conducted to find out the language acquisition of a person who learnt English as the second language. The research was done by using quantitative design. The subject of this research was a Korean who came to an English speaking country, Australia. The subject was first learned English when the subject was in junior high school. The data was displayed in the form of number with description in analysis part. The theory used was Processability Theory by Piennemann. Thetheory stated that at anystage of development, the learner can produce and comprehend only those second language linguistic forms that the current state of processors can handle. There are 6 stages of language acquisition proposed by Piennemann regarding the morphological aspect of language learners. The result showed that the subject was on the stage 5 of the Processability Theory. It meantthat the subject was able to produce the third person singular (-s). This stage decision is based on the stages of acquisition of nominal and verbal morphology in ESL by Pienemann (2007) and Johnston and Brindley (1988).Keywords: language acquisition, processability theory.

Political speech must be perceived critically in order to avoid the misuse of power. Applying Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this paper offered a perspective to understand how power is symbolically exercised through the use of language in Jokowi’s State Address on the occasion of 74th Indonesia Independence Day 2019. The analysis started by collecting the clauses with high modulation represented by the modal word ‘must’. It appeared as the most frequent modal in the speech text indicating that there is an act of commanding given by the President. However, the high modulated clauses did not give a clear guide on who is the liable Actor for the realization of the discourse of an “Advanced Indonesia”. This phenomenon in language was critical to show that there was a possibility of symbolic violence, which happens because of speaker/writer did not clearly state who was the responsible Actor for each specific action required in the discourse of an Advanced Indonesia. In this instance, his speech opens the possibility of symbolic violence. This was proven by 1) the unidentified accountable Actor from the use of the pronoun ‘we’, 2) hidden agent in nominalization in the Material process, 3) the use of passive voice with Material Process, and 4) the process of Relational Process of Attributive used for characterizing Indonesia.

"Avatar: The Way of Water" is a highly anticipated sequel in James Cameron's groundbreaking franchise, promising a deeper exploration of environmental themes intertwined with indigenous cultures. This study employs eco-critical analysis, augmented by AI insights, to investigate into the intricate connections between environmentalism and Islamic perspectives within the narrative. By examining the movie's portrayal of nature, spirituality, and socio-political dynamics, this study aims to uncover underlying themes that resonate with Islamic environmental ethics. Through the lens of AI-assisted analysis, the researchers unveil nuanced layers of interpretation, shedding light on the movie's potential to inspire meaningful dialogue on environmental stewardship and cultural sustainability. The researchers examine the symbiotic ecology and its hypothetical biology, which is proposed to be "better" than the metal-based technology used by the 'invading' humanity. It challenges the idealized notion of nature as a collection of native animals, plants, and people. Lastly, this study explores the different anthropocentric themes that the movie explores, criticizes the Na'vi's subtly "humanistic" domination over other fauna, and explores the prospects of embracing a truly impartial perspective to capture the realities of oppressed not humans.

This research analyzes anxiety and defense mechanism by Sigmund Freud in The Farewell Film. The objective of this study is to describe how anxiety and defense mechanism portrayed through Wang as the main character in the film. This research uses qualitative design. The data are dialogues and scenes that are related to anxiety and defense mechanism. The data are analyzed by using Freud’s theory and the process of data analysis is using Miles and Huberman’s theory. Based on the result of this study, the researchers make two points. Two theories are presented by the main character. Anxiety was displayed by the character. Billi's grandmother, who was diagnosed with cancer, could not live much longer. Defense mechanisms include regression, rationalization, sublimation, and repression. Due to her anxiety, Billi applied various defenses attitudes unconsciously. Unconsciously, Billi suppresses his discomfort in many ways, including having fun, thinking rationally, and carrying out useful social activities. The second reason is that Billi uses the defenses to maintain her relationship with her family as well as to counter anxiety. As a result, Billi suppressed her id in order to maintain good relations with her family by suppressing her personal interests. Keywords: Anxiety, Defense mechanism, Psychoanalysis
