Abstract

The study aims to investigate the English presentation self-efficacy of ESP undergraduate students through a longitudinal-experimental research design. Rooted in Bandura's social cognitive theory, it addresses two research problems: how Indonesian ESP undergraduate students' English presentation self-efficacy developed when they were exposed to mastery experience in the form of presentation tasks, and how individual and group presentation tasks affected the English presentation self-efficacy development. Three groups of ESP undergraduate students (n = 107) taking ESP English for Management were purposively selected as the participants for the study. Each group was exposed to one of the three forms of interventions: individual presentation tasks, homogeneous-group presentation tasks, and heterogeneous-group presentation tasks. A Likert-type presentation self-efficacy questionnaire validated by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was utilized to collect the data in Weeks 3, 8, 12, and 16 of the semester. The study found that the Indonesian ESP undergraduate students' English presentation self-efficacy developed significantly as they completed the presentation tasks. The homogeneous-group presentation task outperformed both the heterogeneous-group and individual presentation tasks in enhancing English presentation self-efficacy. Implications for the teaching practices, study limitations, and future research recommendations are presented.

Abstract

In higher education, developing strong writing skills is crucial for students' academic and career success. Unfortunately, this important aspect of education has been somewhat neglected in the context of Maluku province. Therefore, this study, serves the crucial purpose of shedding light on the multifaceted factors that underpin the deficiencies in writing skills. The primary aim of this study is to explore the fundamental factors contributing to the deficiencies in tertiary students' writing skills. To accomplish this, we conducted a quantitative survey, selecting a random sample of 70 Moluccan local students out of 120 who were enrolled in an essay writing class. Results indicate that cognitive factors play the most pivotal role in contributing to deficiencies in writing skills, boasting a remarkably high path coefficient value of 0.846. Linguistic factors and motivational aspects closely follow, with values of 0.556 and 0.528, respectively. The deficiency in writing skills among students can be attributed to a lack of internal motivation for learning, and inadequate opportunities provided by teachers for real-life observation and learning. For effective improvement in writing abilities, students need both an intrinsic motivation to learn and consistent guidance and stimulation from educators. The process of writing not only involves linguistic capability but also a deep cognitive understanding, emphasizing the need for students to process and present their thoughts comprehensively and appealingly. Improving tertiary students' writing skills require a comprehensive approach that addresses cognitive, linguistic, and motivational factors. Implementing these implications can result in more effective teaching methods and improved writing outcomes for students.

Abstract

The research aims to review developments in language and technology research that can improve the quality of teaching and learning in engineering. Several factors that can influence the teaching and learning process are explained, supported by a bibliometric analysis (with keywords “Language” AND “Engineering Learning” from Google Scholar from 2020 to 2022). The review includes the definition of engineering education with technology's advantages in engineering education. We also explained about purpose and service of language with what considerations in making strategies in language and technology for teaching and learning engineering education. Explanations about formal and informal learning as well as education level to learn engineering and curriculum development were also added. The application of technology in media and laboratories is also the main factor in improving literacy and language's impact on students. All factors cannot be separated from language and student characteristics, motivation, teacher-student relationships, therapy, and psychological condition. We also added information regarding language barriers for students with special needs and new language-improving technology for teaching. The results of the co-occurrence analysis expressed several points to be considered, including children, mathematics, STEM, education, and educators’ terms. Thus, it obtained that the principle of engineering education refers to the process of teaching and learning about scientific concepts, principles, and practices, and technology plays an important role because it is closely related to scientific principles and investigative methods. Language has an important role in supporting students' understanding and abilities in this subject since it conveys learning information. This paper can be used as a reference for educators to understand current conditions regarding the importance of language in the teaching and learning in the engineering field.

Abstract

Technology can be directed to provide effective and productive pedagogy in the English language classroom. One of these fairly recent technological platforms for English language teaching and learning is the mobile phone. Also known as m-learning, it offers valuable opportunities for educators to create effective teaching strategies through the utilisation of mobile phones. On the receiving end of this pedagogical strategy are our students, our clients, whose perspectives and attitudes towards m-learning warrant equaly important considerations. Thus, this study was pursued to probe the role of mobile phone for English language learning in the Indonesian context. The study was guided by the theory of connectivism, activity theory, and communities of practice. This case study adopted a mix of qualitative and quantitative means for the purpose of accumulating data with semi-structured interviews and questionnaires as primary research instruments. It was learnt through the study that students are generally in favour of and have positive responses on the use of mobile phones in language learning but several emergent problems need to be addressed by institutional administrators and classroom instructors when tapping on m-learning. These research findings pave the way for subsequent research endeavours to delve into the efficacy of m-learning as a viable mediating variable for language learning, especially in the wake of prevalent online learning scenario, where mobile phones have become an integral part of online and distance learning platforms.

Abstract

This research explores the implementation of Arabic language learning at the Maitreechit Withayattan School in Bangkok, Thailand. With a population dominated by a Muslim minority, this research aims to understand the challenges and potential for developing Arabic language education in this context. The research background reflects Thailand's uniqueness as an ASEAN country with a Muslim minority that is recognized and regulated by national law. The focus of the research is on issues of student interest, teaching methods, hidden learning goals, and the role of teachers in the learning process. The research method uses modern ethnographic studies at Maitrechit Wittaayathan School Bangkok. Research findings show that students' low interest is influenced by less innovative teaching methods and a need for more variety in learning. Hidden learning goals, which include students' political aspirations to support the position of Muslims in government, become a complex dynamic in Arabic language learning. The importance of Arabic in the government context was a significant finding, with students being taught that Arabic language skills can provide a competitive advantage in careers in the government sector. Despite challenges regarding student interest, school administrators' high enthusiasm for Arabic creates the potential for solid collaboration between education and religious identity development. Implications for Arabic language education management include the need for more exciting learning strategies, teacher training, and collaboration with external parties to increase the relevance of learning to careers. This research provides in-depth insight into the complex dynamics of Arabic language education in Muslim minority school environments in Thailand. However, it should be acknowledged that the research findings are limited to one school in Bangkok, and generalization of the findings must be done cautiously.

Abstract

Language politeness is considered one of the defining characteristics of Indonesian society. In the age of global communication and computing, moderate politeness, centered on politeness of opinion, politeness in deliberation, and politeness in respecting the opinions of others, is an important factor. However, progressive politeness in Urban Muhammadiyah Primary School is becoming a growing concern that requires special attention. The purpose of this study was to examine this violation in the interactions between learners, teachers, and principals in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This study adopts a qualitative approach with a case study design. The data were collected from interviews, observations, and documentation. Interviews were conducted with classroom teachers, principals, and learners, while observations were recorded through field notes and reflections. Moreover, audio-visual documentation in the form of photographs, videos, and recordings during the learning processes and interactions between learners or teachers were utilized. Data collection was based on four strategies: observation, interview, documents, and audio-visual, as outlined in Creswell's theory. Validity was examined using data triangulation, member checking, prolonged duration of data collection, repeated observations in the study location, and peer examination. The findings of the study include a) There was a violation of the politeness through bullying, body shaming, and verbal abuse, which violated the principles of appreciation and sympathy. b) Urban Muhammadiyah Primary School helped promote language politeness through several methods, including performing Duha prayers, morning recitation with assistance from the teacher and principal, and teacher role modelling by arriving at school at 06.15 and reciting Asmaul Husna together. Importantly, these efforts positively affected the politeness of the learners. This study provides an update on the assistance given to learners to address impoliteness, including Duha prayers, morning recitation, and memorization of Al-Qur'an and Asmaul Husna assisted by teachers. Moreover, the school has a well-equipped School Health Unit (SHU) to promote a healthy, clean, disciplined, and polite lifestyle. Appeals are made through persuasive and affectionate books and direct assistance from teachers as role models. The study of the Quran and Asmaul Husna demonstrates children's moderate politeness in expressing their opinions. The agreement to develop a joint discipline demonstrates the children's moderate politeness in deliberation.
