Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of integrating project-based learning (PjBL) with the Latemmamala cultural approach in enhancing the analytical exposition writing skills of grade XI students at SMA Negeri 3 Soppeng. Utilizing a quantitative research design, the study assessed improvements in students' writing abilities through pre-test and post-test evaluations, focusing on grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, fluency, and organization. Results indicated a notable increase in students' writing skills, with the mean score rising from 1425 to 2240. The standard deviation decreased from pre-test (4.811) to post-test (3.185), suggesting a more uniform improvement among students post-intervention. The paired samples t-test further substantiated the efficacy of the intervention (t(observational) = 7.14, p < 0.05), indicating a significant enhancement in writing skills attributable to the culturally infused PBL methodology. The study revealed that integrating PBL with a cultural perspective not only improved students' writing proficiency but also enhanced their motivation, creativity, and engagement with the learning process. It demonstrated that the Latemmamala cultural theme enriched the learning environment, fostering a closer bond between teacher and students through continuous monitoring and support during the project work. Significant improvements were observed in various facets of writing, reflecting the approach's comprehensive impact. By demonstrating the potential of culturally responsive teaching strategies, this study provides a valuable model for educators seeking to foster more inclusive, engaging, and effective learning environments. It underscores the importance of integrating cultural heritage within a PjBL framework to enhance language education, offering new insights into the potential of culturally enriched PBL. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on the benefits of cultural approaches in education and highlights the efficacy of integrating the Latemmamala cultural approach in improving students' academic skills and cultural understanding

Abstract

This research explores the issues of applying bilingual education in China Panorama Curriculum, with purpose to enhance cross-cultural adaptability of ASEAN students in higher education. Employing questionnaires and interviews with a longitudinal analysis based on factors like age, gender, nationality, and time in China, to investigate the cross-cultural adaptability of ASEAN students in China, focusing on psychological and learning environment adaptation. The research uncovers challenges in adapting to the Chinese cultural landscape and proposes solutions. Cultural disparities between China and ASEAN nations are identified, with the bilingual education approach proving beneficial in fostering classroom participation and cultural exchange. However, psychological challenges persist, impacting mental well-being and academic performance. The research reveals the limited social life of ASEAN students in China, confined to campus interactions, suggesting improvements in English proficiency among teachers and encouraging active student participation in social activities. While bilingual education holds promise, the research emphasizes the need for comprehensive strategies, including teacher training and addressing socioeconomic disparities. The findings offer insights into cross-cultural adaptation complexities, highlighting the potential of bilingual education within the Panorama Curriculum. Caution is advised when generalizing beyond ASEAN students in Guangxi, China, considering potential variations in cultural, social, and educational contexts internationally.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to develop and test the efficiency of a mobile application for promoting out-of-class English practice for Thai university students enrolling in an English for academic purposes course. This mobile application featured interactive flashcards, multiple-choice quizzes, matching quizzes, spelling quizzes, and a news-update page.  The participants in this study were 79 undergraduate students divided into two groups based on their voluntary use of the application.  In the experimental group, after the pre-test, sixty-three students downloaded and used the application for one month, while the control group consisted of the 16 students who did not download or use the app after the pre-test.  Both the pre-test and post-test consisted of listening, vocabulary, grammar, and reading.  Their pre-test and post-test scores were compared by using the pair-sample t-test in the experimental group, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used in the control group.  Additional data regarding the usability and perceived effectiveness of the app were collected using an online questionnaire and analyzed using the mean and standard deviation.  It was found that students who used the app performed significantly better in their post-test than in their pre-test, but that was not the case for students in the control group who did not use the app.  The data from the questionnaire show that users were satisfied with the app features and frequently used the matching quizzes, usage quizzes, and meaning quizzes.  They also agreed that the app was usable and effective, and they supported further development in terms of contents.  This shows that the application should be implemented in order to increase achievement in learning English for specific purposes.

Abstract

Extensive reading (ER) provides young English language learners (YELLs) many benefits, including the sustainable development of writing (e.g., the reading-writing relationship). However, this area is under- researched. To address this, this quasi-experimental study investigated the effect of ER on YELLs' second language writing achievement using an enhanced ER treatment. Pre- and post-Cambridge Primary English Test (PET) samples were collected and evaluated via the PET analytic rubric total band and subscales scores (Content, Communicative Achievement, Organization, Language). The results indicated that the EG outperformed the CG in total band score and three subscale bands (Content, Organization, Language), and the EG and CG performed comparably well in the fourth (Communicative Achievement). As prior research specific to ER’s effect on YELLs’ writing achievement in the Vietnam context is noticeably understudied, this study offers a starting point for future investigations.

Abstract

The increase in borderless digital-based business competition shows how language education is impacted by neoliberalism in this global era. We explore how linguistic technopreneurship (LT) roles is increasingly constructed as a form of linguistic entrepreneurship to exploit language-related resources to enhance one's socioeconomic value strategically. This research aims to critically examine the influence of LT toward business success digitalization for Small Medium Enterprises in West Java  and it’s implication for Language Education. The research also focusing on the creation of novelty, namely linguistic technopreneurship (LT), which is a refinement of entrepreneurial linguistics (EL). LT is expected to be able to explain how linguistic entrepreneurship can be indexed from two different aspects, namely how to package language education and digital business success. We then discuss under what conditions the notion of linguistic technopreneurship can be applied to digital platform-based business settings and what kind of contradictions this gives rise to. The method used is quantitative, and it involves carrying out SEM analysis. A non-probability sampling technique was used to obtain a minimum of 250 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Industry owners who run their businesses through digital platforms in West Java province, which is the province with the most significant number of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Industries in Indonesia. The research results show that LT significantly influences the success of business success and impact the language education practice. It can be concluded that language education is an added value for a person and influences socioeconomic success.
