Abstract

This study aims at describing the development of learning activities in pronunciation practice class through lesson study. The number of sample is two passive students (student A and B) obtained by using purposive sampling. The instruments of this research are observation sheet and documentation. The data are analyzed quantitatively. The result of this research shows the learning activities development of student A and B has fluctuated. The learning activities of student A has increased from 2.25 to 2.7 in the second cycle, both in fairly active category. It becomes 2.55 in the third cycle and 2.25 in the fourth cycle. While the learning activities of student B has increased from 2.35 with fairly active category to 3.05 with active category in the second cycle. In the third cycle it becomes 2.65 and in the fourth cycle it becomes 2.5. It means lesson study can improve the learning activity of passive students to be fairly active or active.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out (1) Grammatical errors in recount text made by the English Department students of the second and the sixth semester of Cokroaminoto University of Palopo, (2) the frequent grammatical errors made by the second and the sixth semester students of English department students (3) The difference of grammatical errors made by the second and the sixth semester students. The sample of the study was 723 sentences made by 30 students of the second semester and 30 students of the sixth semester students in academic year 2013/2014 that were taken by cluster random sampling technique. The sentences were 337 (46.61%) simple sentences, 83(11.48%) compound sentences, 218 (30.15%) complex sentences, 85 (11.76%) compound complex sentences. The data were collected by using two kinds of instruments namely: writing test to find the students’ grammatical errors and questionnaire to find the solution to prevent or minimize errors. Data on the students’ errors were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The results of the study showed that the students made 832 errors classified into13 types of errors which consisted of 140 (16.82%) errors in production of verb, 110 (13.22%) errors in preposition, 106 (12,74%) errors in distribution of verb, 98 (11.77%) miscellaneous errors, 82 (9.85%) errors in missing subject, 67(8.05%) errors in part of speech, 61 (7,33%) errors in irregular verbs, 58 (6.97%) other errors in verb groups, 52(6.25%) errors in the use of article, 24 (2.88%) errors in gerund, 18 (2.16%) errors in infinitive, 11(1.32%) errors in pronoun/case, and 5 (0.6%) errors in questions. The top six frequent grammatical errors made by the students were production of verb group, preposition, distribution of verb group, miscellaneous error, missing subject, and part of speech. The difference of both groups was the frequency in committing errors such as part of speech, irregular verb, infinitive verbs, and other errors in verb.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out: (1) the types of code switching used by the English teacher (2) the dominant types of code switching used by the teacher and (3) the teacher’s perceptions toward the use of teachers’ code switching in English classroom at SMA I Malili. This research took one of the English teachers as the subject of the research and the data were gathered through observation, interview, and recorded by using video recorder and field notes. The data were then analyzed using discourse analysis. The result of analysis showed that (1) the teacher used three types of code switching, namely: intrasentential code switching, inter-sentential code switching, and tag switching; (2) the dominant types of code switching used was intrasentential code switching followed by inter sentential code switching and tag switching (3) the interviewed teacher responded positively toward the use of code switching by the English teacher in English classroom.

Abstract

This paper describes the performance and the weaknesses of the English learning media created by student of English Education Study Program and applied at SMP Negeri 8 Palopo. This English learning media can improve the students’ vocabulary and the teacher and students of SMP Negeri 8 Palopo give positive response toward this English learning media but still there are many suggestions to the author. After analysing this media, it is found that the performance of this media have weaknesses such as: the material, exercise, pronunciation, and picture.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out the extent to which contextual guessing technique can improve the students’ reading comprehension and also to find out the students’ attitudes toward the use of contextual guessing technique in reading comprehension. The research used pre experimental design with one group pretest and posttest design. The research used purposive sampling technique where the sample consisted of 33 students who were taken in one class. The result of this research shows that there is siginificant difference between pre test and post test (5.03 < 8.90). The result of t-test value and t-table (17.31 > 2.037) also implies that there is a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension after the treatment. It means that by using Contextual Guessing Technique is effecftive in improving students’ reading comprehension. Based on the classification table from the data of questionnaire, the writer found that the students’ attitudes toward the use of contextual guessing technique in reading comprehension is very positive. It is approved from 33 students whose their attitude have been researched, it is found that 18 (54.55%) students are classified as very positive, 14 (42.42%) students are classified as positive, 1 (3.03%) student is classified as doubt, and none of them are classified as negative and very negative.

Abstract

Speaking is an important skill learned by English student although English covers four skills namely speaking, listening, speaking and writing. Speaking is the main bridge for the students to master English. Unfortunately the fact has shown that the students were quite difficult to improve their speaking skill because they were accustomed to use their native language language in their daily life than using English. The above facts signify that the lecturer should apply the techniques that can motivate students to speak and engage students in encouraging activities. One of the techniques that encourage students to speak is role play. Role play is the choice implemented by the researcher in improving the speaking skill of the first year students at ABA Balikpapan since using role play, the students can express their idea, opinion, and feeling well in their performance without being worried to make mistake. Based on the result of the study, it can be concluded that the result of this research was satisfying. This research claims that it was successful in the effort in improving students’ English speaking skill through Role-Play. Role-Play activity could increase the students’ motivation in joining the teaching and learning activity. Their motivation is reflected in their efforts in preparing the Role-Play.

Abstract

Abstract

Most lecturers were still rely on the lecturing method to deliver material, how they use the media (whiteboard, pictures, cards) and their teaching methods are less than optimal and catch students’ attention, which degrade the quality of the learning process. The result of preliminary study shows that the previous English summative test score were still 50. It means that their score average was still for all the students in that Second Semester. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to instruction that can foster vocabulary development. The research design of this study was classroom action research, which focuses on a particular group of students in a certain classroom. The setting of the research was Akademi Bahasa Balikpapan. The subjects of the research were the second-semester students who took English vocabulary lesson. Data collection techniques adapted to the data to be obtained to determine students' achievement of English test by using Adobe Flash CS3 Media in vocabulary building project assessment in making animation collection that were contained with English sentences and their meanings. To determine the role of the student in the learning process with the assessment of the affective aspects of the observations obtained during the teaching and learning activities take place and the role of the student participation. The results showed that it could be concluded that the implementation of the Adobe Flash TAI strategy in teaching vocabulary could enhance the students’ Project on groups’ laptop in vocabulary the text. The observation checklist and field note proved the students’ involvement in text given.
