Abstract

Background: Vast changing environment and culture including mass media which commonly shows models with a very slim body may cause teenage girls feel fatty and not confident despite their normal body weight. This misperception may influence eating behavior and encourage them to lose weight by involving in some instant diets, for example, fad diets.Objective: To identify relationships between body image distortion, eating behavior, and fad diets among female adolescents in Yogyakarta.Method: This study was a cross-sectional study on 123 school girls at SMAN 8 Yogyakarta who have normal body mass index (BMI) according to WHO category. Body image distortion and eating behavior were evaluated using the Body Image Assesment-Body Dimension (BIAS-BD), and the Eating Attitude Test (EAT)-26, respectively. Fad diets were assessed using a questionnaire adapted from Hana (10) and Rafiqa (11). The hypotheses were tested using chi-square test and Spearman’s correlations.Results: As many as 105 girls (85.4%) showed body image distortion and 15 girls (12.2%) were at risks for having disordered eating behavior. Among 51 girls (42.5%) who experienced or tried to lose weight, 47 girls (92.2%) were practicing fad diets. There was no significant association between body image distortion and disordered eating behavior, nor between body image distortion and fad diets. However, disordered eating behavior was significantly associated with fad diets with OR = 7,077 (p<0.05).Conclusion: There was a significant relationship (p<0.05) between disordered eating behavior and fad diets, however, no significant association was found between body image distortion and disordered eating behavior, and between body image distortion and fad diets among female adolescents in Yogyakarta.

Abstract

Sebagai negara yang sedang berkembang dan sedang membangun, bangsa Indonesia masih memiliki beberapa ketertinggalan dan kekurangan jika dibandingkan negara lain yang sudah lebih maju. Di bidang kesehatan, bangsa Indonesia masih harus berjuang memerangi berbagai macam penyakit infeksi dan kurang gizi yang saling berinteraksi satu sama lain menjadikan tingkat kesehatan masyarakat Indonesia tidak kunjung meningkat secara signifikan. Ironisnya, di beberapa daerah lain atau pada sekelompok masyarakat Indonesia yang lain terutama di kota-kota besar, masalah kesehatan masyarakat utama justru dipicu dengan adanya kelebihan gizi; meledaknya kejadian obesitas di beberapa daerah di Indonesia akan mendatangkan masalah baru yang mempunyai konsekuensi- konsekuensi serius bagi pembangunan bangsa Indonesia khususnya di bidang kesehatan. Pendek kata, masih tingginya prevalensi kurang gizi di beberapa daerah dan meningkatnya prevalensi obesitas yang dramatis di beberapa daerah yang lain akan menambah beban yang lebih kompleks dan harus dibayar mahal oleh bangsa Indonesia dalam upaya pembangunan bidang kesehatan, sumber daya manusia dan ekonomi.

Abstract

Background: In general, patients with osteoarthritis require long live treatments, especially anti-infammatory drugs. Non steroidal anti infammatory drugs are mostly follow by some side effects such as dyspepsia and gastrointestinal bleeding. The use of natural medicine for rheumatic diseases have commonly been practiced worldwide.Objectives: To learn the changes of hemoglobin level due to treatment with curcuminoid from Curcuma domestica Val. rhizome extract compared to diclofenac sodium as anti-infammatory agent for the treatment of osteoarthritis.Methods: This research is a prospective randomized open end blinded evaluations (PROBE). Patients treated with 30 mg curcuminoid from Curcuma domestica Val. rhizome extract or 25 mg diclofenac sodium three times daily for 4 weeks respectively.The hemoglobin level was checked before and after treatment. Results: A total of 80 patients with knee osteoarthritis participated in this study. There was no signifcant difference in the frequency of sex, educational level, duration of suffering, percentage of co-morbidities in both groups. There was no signifcant different of hemoglobin level before treatment between both treatment group. The hemoglobin level was increase signifcantly in curcuminoid treatment groups while no signifcant change in diclofenac group. Treatment with curcuminoid increasing the hemoglobin level signifcantly compare to diclofenac sodium (p=0.03).Conclusion: Treatment with curcuminoid from Curcuma domestica Val. rhizome increasing the hemoglobin level signifcantly compare to diclofenac sodium treatment for osteoarthritis.

Abstract

Background: Childbearing pattern of parents greatly affects the healthy lifestyle of children including behaviors preventing children from obesity. Working mothers with a dual role at work and the family face challenges in doing so.Objective: To identify the effect of work-family conflict in working mothers to obesogenic behaviors of elementary school children at Yogyakarta Municipality.Method: This was a quantitative study with cross sectional design. Obesogenic behaviors were assessed using questionnaire of Family Health Behavior Scale. Role conflict was assessed using questionnaire of Work-Family Conflict filled by working mothers. Nutrition status of children was assessed using a parameter of body mass index by age with the standard of WHO 2007.Results: The result of the study showed 47.73% of working mothers had high role conflict and 45.26% of children had high obesogenic behaviors. There was no effect of work-family conflict in working mothers to obesogenic behaviors of elementary school children at Yogyakarta. The influencing factors were family income (p<0.001); position/job type (p<0.001); gender (p<0.05); and nutrition status (p<0.05).Conclusion: Work-family conflict in working mothers had no effect to obesogenic behaviors of elementary school children at Yogyakarta Municipality.

Abstract

Background: The declaration of Martial Law in Aceh Province have been held, they evacuate themselves to save from the risks when bombardment happen. In refugee camp, there were problems, like improperly place to live, lack of food, and lack of water. This condition will make the nutritional and health status become worse. It can be signed by the increasing of under nutrition prevalence.Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the food consumption pattern, breastfeeding pattern, nutritional intake, infection diseases, and nutritional status of infant under five years old in refugee camp.Method: This was an observational study with cross sectional design. This study was conducted in Keunire refugee camp, Pidie District, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province. Subjects of this study were infants under five years old. Data were collected by interview using open questionnaire, while nutritional intake data were collected by recall method and analyzed using computer. The assesment of nutritional intake was using anthropometry method. Data were analyzed using chi square test and t-test.Results: General and specific feeding pattern were given by the team of disaster and refugee tackling of Pidie District for Keunire refugee camp. Specific feeding pattern was given to the infant of under five years old as a food supplement. That food supplement should fulfill 15.4-30.5% energy and 28.5% - 69.1% protein requirements. Breastfeeding pattern changed into more regular when they were ini refugee camp, because their children were thirsty and crying. Mean of energy and protein intake of refugee infant of under five years old were higher than that of non refugee. The under nutrition prevalences of refugee infant of under five years old were 21.7% (WHZ), 32.5% (WAZ), while that prevalences of non refugee infant were 23.8% (WHZ) and 39.7% (WAZ). Statistically, there were no differences in under nutrition prevalences between both of them. Nutritional status had association with energy intake, protein intake, and infection diseas in refugee camp.Conclusions: There was changing in breastfeeding pattern in refugee camp. There were also differences in mean of energy and protein intake between refugee and non refugee infant of under five years old, but there was no difference in nutritional status.

Abstract

Background: bserving plate waste is categorized as a simple way but yet still needs evaluation. When many foods are wasted, a dietitian should quickly respond and know the best way how to overcome the matters. There are three accurate ways to determine plate waste: plate waste weighing, visual estimation, and 24 hours recall. The application of each method really depends on its purposes. According to previous researches there are significant and positive correlations between the visual estimation of Comstock Scale and plate waste weighing. Visual estimation, moreover, has more advantages as it is easy to apply, cheap, and less time consuming. Considering those advantages, visual estimation needs to be socialized and considered as a new accurate method besides weighing methods.Objective: The objective of this study is to know the medical official accuracy in determining plate waste using visual estimation of 6 point Comstock Scale.Methods: An observational study was conducted using a cross-sectional design. Subjects were nurses and meal servants from hospital wards. Before the meal served to the patient the food is weighed, than the observers officer has to observed portion sized. After the patient having meal, plate waste should be estimated using Comstock Scale by the officer after that the plate waste have to be weight to know the actual weigh. The accuracy difference between two groups in determining plate waste using Comstock Scale were analysed with t-test.Results: There was significant differences of accuracy (p=0.01) between nurse group and meal servant in estimating wasted rice and wasted meat (p=0.02). The difference were not due to the job factor but the significant of various meal (p=0.0001). The work experience is a significant factor in the accuracy of plate waste (p=0.42). There was no correlation between kind of job and kind of meal (p=0.47), and kind of meal with the work experience (p=0.79).Conclusion: Visual estimation of 6 point Comstock scale could be used by both nurses and meal servant in determining plate waste.

Abstract

Background: in Indonesia diarrhea is still a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children especially those under five years of age. The Household Health Survey 2000 and 2003 shows an increase of diarrhea morbidity rate from 300 to 374 per 1,000 people. At the inpatient ward of Dr. Sardjito Hospital in 2005, diarrhea was found as the major cause of patients being hospitalized. One of the causes of high diarrhea morbidity rate is poor nutritional status. In 2002, the prevalence of undernourished children in Indonesia was 27.3% and in the Province of Yogyakarta Special Territory was 11.39%. Ultimately, nutritional status and diarrhea are related to each other, which lead to very famous "vicious cycle", diarrhea causes malnutrition and malnutrition causes diarrhea. Objective: To identify relationship between nutritional status and the duration of diarrhea. Method: This observational study was conducted with retrospective cohort design using the data of medical records and surveillance of diarrhea at Dr. Sardjito Hospital from September 2005 to September 2006. Subject of the study were 138 children of 6 months to 5 years old suffering from acute diarrhea. Data analysis used Fisher's exact test and one way ANOVA.Result: The average duration of diarrhea among undernourished children was 101.0 + 28.28 hours, wasted children was 96.31 + 16.69 hours, normal nourished children was 65.06 + 6.90 hours, and well nourished children was 64.52 + 11.70 hours. There was a significant relationship between nutritional status and the duration of diarrhea (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There was a significant relationship between nutritional status and the duration of diarrhea. This means that children with poor nutritional status would likely suffer longer from diarrhea.

Abstract

Background: Status of minerals such as zinc, magnesium, and chromium among diabetic patients are considered lower than non-diabetic peoples, both in the serum and intake. Some reviews show that those minerals contribute to carbohydrate metabolism among diabetic patients.Objective: This study aims to explore intake of zinc, magnesium, and chromium among DMT2 in Denpasar.Method: This is a cross-sectional analytic study. The population was all (70) DMT2 patients registered at Chronic Disease Service (Prolanis) at two Primary Health Care (PHC) Denpasar Utara III PHC and Denpasar Timur I PHC. The sample for the study was DMT2 patients and non-diabetic people age 50-70 years reside in Denpasar city. DMT2 patients were randomly selected with simple random technique, while non-diabetic peoples were non-randomly selected. The level of serum chromium was measured by AAS method, whereas microminerals intake were collected by a recall and SQ-FFQ method. Data was analyzed descriptively and differences were tested with two independent t-test at 95% confidence level.Results: The mean of serum chromium DMT2 and non-diabetic were 0.044 mg/L and 0.094 mg/L respectively. The mean±SEM magnesium (DMT2 316.1±22.4 mg/day; non-diabetic 211.0±33.5 mg/day), zinc intake was (DMT2 8.4±0.7 mg/day; non-diabetic 6.2±0.8 mg/day), and chromium (DMT2 10.8±1.3 µg/day; non-diabetic 8.7±0.9µg/day). A significant difference was found between magnesium intake (p=0.01).Conclusion: The study showed that zinc, magnesium and chromium intake is appeared higher among DMT2 patients compare to non-diabetic in Denpasar region.

Abstract

Background: Eradication of poverty and starvation is still an agenda of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 2015 due to the serious impact of poverty and starvation to human beings. Poverty and starvation are worsened by smoking habit of the Indonesian population. Expenditures used for cigarettes may bring bad impact to the health of toddlers, including lack of nutrient intake. However, until today it is not yet precisely known how much lack of nutrient intake in toddlers caused by cigarette consumption. Objective: To identify difference in nutrient intake of energy and protein of toddlers based on the amount of cigarettes consumed in poor household at Yogyakarta Municipality.Method: The study used cross sectional design. Subject consisted of 86 toddlers of two-five years living in poor household at Yogyakarta Municipality. Cigarette consumption, mother of toddlers and all members of the family were obtained from interview. Method to assess intake was multiple 24 hours food recall within four days, whereas interview was used to assess cigarette consumption. Statistical analysis was performed by using Two Sample Independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, regression, and Chi-Square.Results: As much as 77.9% of poor household had at least one smoker. There was no significant difference in intake of energy and protein of toddlers living with smokers and non smokers, though percentage of expenditure for food was significantly lower in the household with smokers. This might be due to high consumption of food with high energy density at affordable price and protein at low price. Snacks were the third most consumed by toddlers and 40% of animal protein consumed were eggs.Conclusion: There was no significant difference in intake of energy and protein of toddlers living in the poor household with smokers and those living with non smokers, but percentage of expenditure for food significantly lower in household with smokers.

Abstract

Background: Weight loss is commonly detected among cancer patients in their early stages. This presumably happens due to low calory intake and increasing energy requirements which finally lead to malnutrition in cancer patients. Early detection to identify nutrition problems of cancer patients is through screening so as to maximize nutrient intake through nutrition therapy and diet modification and to improve nutrition status as well as quality of life of cancer patients.Objective: The study aimed to identify the relationship between nutrition status based on PS-SGA and nutrient intake and weight loss of cancer patients hospitalized at Dr. M. Hoesin Hospital of Palembang.Methods: The study was observational with prospective cohort study design. In this study the group that had fulfilled inclusion criteria were screened during their early hospitalization (within 24 hours) using patient-generated subjective global assessment score to identify their nutrition problem. Next, the group was divided into 2 smaller groups consisting of one group with malnutrition and another group without malnutrition. Analysis of nutrient intake obtained from foods provided by the hospital and outside the hospital was made to the two groups within 2 weeks of hospitalization using visual comstock and food record. Anthropometric measurement was made to find weight loss the subject of the study.Results: The results of the study showed that there was significant relationship between nutrition status and intake of energy and protein with p=0.000. The result of logistic regression test to nutrition status based on weight changes indicated that there was significant relationship between risk of nutrition and weight changes; patients with risk of nutrition had 7.016 times greater probability for weight loss than those without risk of nutrition (95% C5  2.896-16.997).Conclusion: There was significant relationship between nutrition status and nutrient intake among cancer patients and there was greater probability for weight loss.
